It's pasted below in whole form (I hope). Here is some sell rules from a CANSLIM friend of mine. He refers to his "joint account" and this is an account he keeps spending money in to pull some short term gains. The rather tight stops he discusses would be for this account, and not his retirement account (I think). I thought this would be some more fuel for the fire of our selling thread!! Comments and suggestions are very welcome. Earl "This is from Steve" We've developed more new sell rules than Patton had battle plans during the North African campaign. The difference is that Patton beat Rommel in North Africa but the market is soundly beating me this year, so far. I've looked at the charts for DRAM and MRX and made a few calculations. Also looked at the 13-day for all stocks I currently own and have found something interesting. The nearer the breakout the stocks are, the steeper the curve. (Surprise! Surprise!) This means that, in order to stay within an 8% loss range, the stops we are setting are well above the 13-day EMA. In some cases, as much as 5%. This really seems self-defeating, since so many stocks are going to test the 13-day EMA, at least intraday. Admittedly, I don't want to hold a stock if it finishes the day below 8% of my buy point anyway, but we need to figure out how to protect ourselves at 8%, while giving the stock room to move during the day, at least to the 13-day EMA. Note: Our current stop losses are as follows: those above 13-day EMA - PLXT, VARI, TKLC AND AUDC. Those below the 13-day EMA - WAT, KSU, CPN, GLW What this tells me is that we are in real danger of losing our positions in the first four stocks (several of those only affect me, of course), if they try to test the support level, after a day or two of small increases. Perhaps you can run this information by the discussion group. Do we not use hard stops until the 8% limit floats above the 13-day EMA or do we watch the stocks manually but set hard stops at some prescribed level below the 13-day EMA, say 3%, to prevent a catastrophic day (like CYTC had today), yet give the stock room to bounce off it's natural support level, intraday. At least I'm going to institute the following rules for my joint account to minimize losses for the time being. Hopefully this won't be needed permanently, but we'll see. Your comments appreciated. 1) Set a stop at 8% below the buy price and move the stop up 1% for every percent increase in the value. If 8% is good at the time of purchase, it should be good until a break-even point is reached. 2) At the break-even point, begin setting the stops @ 3% below the 13-day EMA or 8% below the day's closing value, whichever is lower. For stocks which have a gradual slope, this should give plenty of room. For those with steeper slopes, 3% below the 13-day provides a good support level. 3) Sell if one day of closing lower occurs on volume above the 50-day average and the stock closes in the bottom quartile of the days price range (this is near the low for the day). To me this is bad Karma and I wantto take my gains, however meager, and run. 4) Sell if two days of closing lower in a row occurs on volume above the 50-day average. I realize these rules are not good for all stocks and I am going to get booted out of those that wander around a lot. I'd just as soon not own those in this account anyway. I'll take the smaller losses or smaller gains and move on to something like WAT, which has a tighter standard deviation and hasn't been threatened by a single rule above. I need to run these through my mind for a day or two, but they would have kept me in DRAM, KEI and MRX (had I owned it). If MRX and DRAM finish lower tomorrow, they would get the boot anyway, assuming the volume is above the 50-day EMA or they hit the 13-day - 3% stop limit. Pretty complicated, but I need something different to happen here. Can't continue the way I'm going. There is a reason why WON wants both RS AND EPS to be over 80. In this stock, its industry group RS is at 86 while ADIC is at 39. The top five in the group are all 97 or better. Clearly, it is not a leader. It has declined so far that it will have substantial overhead resistance to overcome, unless it bases for the next six to nine months, tying up capital. Additionally, I note that earnings have stagnated sequentially for the past two qtrs, and sales for the past three qtrs. Not a sign of heightened expectations, thus the low RS. I could pick on it on other points as well, like an ROE of 9% or an up/down ratio of 0.7, but why bother.
