From: Jeff Lowe Subject: (cdc) a comment Date: 01 Dec 1999 10:34:42 -0700 The purpose of the list, as I understand it, was to keep others in the shire informed, communicate with the members (and members on spy missions in other lands) in a closed members only, so as to not get any outside or offensive comments.(either way). I personally do not need to be bothered by some unconcerned individuals who wish to put their two cents worth in. I want to hear comments which are to the point and worth reading. I will say that since I am no longer Seneschal of Cote du Ciel, I have felt somewhat uniformed and lost. I Guess that is how you all felt when I was Seneschal. I'm sorry about that. I initially proposed putting a pointer to the newsgroup on the shire webpage because I noticed that 14 out of the 20 people with email addresses on the members page are not members of the newsgroup. I can see that advertising the group to nonmembers could put us in the awkward position of tossing people off for not belonging, or alternatively, be forced to listen to their opinions or conduct conversations under their electronic gaze. Hmmm. How about the following: I or the list administrator sends out invitations to the shire members we don't have here on cdc with us, and I put a statement on the members page describing the existence of the newsgroup, explaining that it is a "members only" group, and providing a 'mailto' to myself or the list administrator for more info. I don't think it will create too much overhead, creates a built-in filter, and could go a long way toward promoting discussion (if indeed that is a good thing ). > I will say that since I am no longer Seneschal of Cote > du Ciel, I have felt somewhat uniformed and lost. I Guess that is how > you all felt when I was Seneschal. I'm sorry about that. Ah, post-seneschal depression. I went through the same thing when I gave up my beloved Easaraigh in a different lifetime. Just think of it as your chance to focus on the things you really love about the SCA. You certainly have nothing to regret; from what I've seen, you've built this into a truly wonderful place. This is the Jurgi Meister. I just wanted to tell everyone that was not at fighter pract. the information you should be aware of. O! This is going to be the KM and Chatelaines reports. (THL Grianne) There were quite a few interested individuals, Three of which we got in heavy combat and I got to play with their helmets. My concern is that most people who come out for the heavy combat need to get their own equipment or use loaner stuff. I felt very inadequate because I was not able to provide suits and instruction for all those interested. My main concern, is that unless some avenues of acquisition can be found the interest will be lost. I am extremely busy, so for those who are willing to ad these folks in acquiring their own gear please volunteer. Also, If there is anyone who knows of, has, or is willing to sell armor this needs to be announced at FP. We may also need to do another ratan order. Costuming is a need as well. I figured you must be crowned now as a matter of principle even if you find fighting difficult at the moment. I am sure many opponents would rather roll over and die than face the Pole. (Pun sorta intended.) As for the Wulf theme, you do have an "olf" which, if you trace it back far enough is probably old germanic "ulf" which, as you must know is the same thing as Wulf, or Wolf which means you are a part of the pack. Don't ask me to sniff your rump. The lupine urges only go so far, even if I do know you could kill me on a whim in your most weakened condition. I'll refit it with standard handle and basket and start bringing that for general use. Lastly, I'll bring my 'failed experiments' bag to the next fighter practice to see if any of it can be useful for the new fighters. Speaking of which, when is the next fighter practice? It seems that Santa had about the worst day he could have. He woke to a thick patch of fog and Rudolph was down with the flu. Half his Reindeer were pregnant, the other half had jumped the fence to avoid a paternity suit. The elves were low on production and the train-makers went on strike. Santa tried to help out, but he electrocuted himself and burned his beard. Mrs. Claus informed Santa that her mother was coming for an extended visit. Santa went to the sleigh which had been vandalized by striking elves and had a hole in the bottom where one sack of toys had spilled out into a pile of Reindeer presents. The bells for his sleigh had lost their clangers. He went into the house to find some hate mail from the ACLU. He turned on his computer and received an e-mail from some folks that thought he was a woman. He went into the kitchen to make himself some hot-chocolate only to find out they were out-of-stock on the mix. He turned on the stove to make some hot cidar, but the pilot was out. As he was lifting the stove-top to re-light the pilot, he spilled the pan of cidar all over the kitchen. When he went to get a rag, he knocked his favorite mug on the floor shattering it. When he went to get a broom, mice had eaten all the straw. About that time, the doorbell rang. In a temper Santa ran to the door and opened it to find a small angel with a large christmas tree in tow. "Merry Christmas, Santa!" the angel said cheerfully. "I brought you this Christmas tree, where would you like me to put it?" And that is how we got the tradition of putting an angel on the top of a Christmas tree. Think about it. I have donated many pieces of garb to the loaner box, and most (if not all) has disappeared. Some time ago several shire members helped make some t-tunics, and I think those have disappeared as well. Some items used for rapier have disappeared. If I did not have the storage space for the feast gear, it would probably have disappeared. If Jurgen didn't have storage space for the shire paviallion, it also may have disappeared by now. The Whittier Center has offered storage space in the basement for our use. We just need to build some kind of cabinets that can be locked, and we can store our fighting equipment and loaner garb there (that way it is always available at fighter practices.) The shire should purchase an enclosed trailer to store all the rest of the shire stuff. My OTHER concern with getting all this loaner stuff is that new people don't think they have to worry about getting their own equipment because they know it will be available. Participation in the SCA requires that you get your own stuff. More than two cents worth . . . The shire should > purchase an enclosed trailer to store all the rest of the shire > stuff. That is an interesting idea, and one I think I can help with. I can see that it would be very useful in that it would cut down on the tendancy to let people go home with the loaner gear on the premise that it is easier to keep in one spot, while at the same time insuring the gear is always there for use. Would we build something that is permanently affixed to a wall, or something that, by its sheer size, would deter brigands from absconding with the goods? I've been down in the basement of the Whittier Center -- if I remember right, it is mostly cinder block walls with a concrete floor. If we went with a permanently affixed cabinet, it would reduce our cost, but would require attaching it to the wall. Would the center allow that? We might have to abandon it if we stop using the center. It probably would be a little more secure, although we couldn't hope to stop some really determined bandits. We could build essentially a large armoire that we could knock down for movement. I think I can design and build one for not too much money as long as we don't care what it looks like (I am thinking 2x4s and scrap plywood). I haven't put a list together, but intuitively I would guess around $150 for a cabinet measuring 4x6x2, once you include all the hardware and shelving, and assuming we had to buy all the wood (which we might not). Just as a side note, how big a cabinet would we need, if we made one? I drew a sketch of what I am thinking of, at http://www.cs.usu.edu/~watson/coteduciel/images/cabinet.jpg > My OTHER concern with getting all this loaner stuff is that new > people don't think they have to worry about getting their own > equipment because they know it will be available. The difficult part is making sure the stuff they borrow ends up back in our coffers as opposed to their garages. -bart Lord Bartholomew Hightower of Canterbury mka Dan Watson bartholomew@dan.cs.usu.edu http://www.cs.usu.edu/~watson/bartholomew ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bartholomew Hightower" Subject: (cdc) A little advertising never hurt anybody... It'll get VERY heavy with armour and costumes in it. I figured five sheets of plywood and ten 2x4's would make a very sturdy cabinet. It is a clear Acrylic spray used to fix paintings and drawings, ceramics...etc. You can buy it at any art/crafts store and Book Table, Art and Frame shops. Any good spray type fixative will work. There is usually varrious types. Matt, Glossy, satain etc... and also workable fixative which allows you to add to the drawing or painting with layers of color, value etc... Spray Fix is simply Acrylic Paint. Jurgi Rebecca Mikkelsen wrote: > I am looking for a particular art product requested by one of the > administrators.
