Wrap it up with tape and your good to go. (ps toilet paper tubes, rubberbands, cloth, bananna peals, twinkies (with or wothout squeakie toys) do not work, but the squeakie toy ideia sounds like fun I'll have to try it. Of course, you all know he had surgery on Thursday. By Saturday he was feeling great. During the weekend he was up and walking several times a day, was alert and not needing too much pain medication. Monday morning I went to see him before work and he didn't even want to see me--he was very nauseous. The doctor had warned him that when the bowels began working they would move waste both directions and probably cause nausea. He wasn't feeling well through Tuesday and I didn't even go see him that day. Wednesday morning about 8:30 I was at work and he called me. There was emotion in his voice and he said "something is wrong. the doctor wants to talk to you". Dr. Dean said that Olan had gone down hill rapidly through the night and that he either had an infection or there was something else wrong that would involve going back to the operating room. He explained what it could be (and what those things are aren't important because it turned out to be none of them). Dr Dean said that he had put Olan on antibiotics and that he was going to watch Olan for a couple of hours and if there wasn't some dramatic improvement, he would take him back into surgery. I got over to the hospital as soon as I could and talked to Dr. Dean again. Not long after that the nurse came in and said that there was an opening in the ER and they were going to take him in. Dr. Dean came in and spoke to me again before the surgery. I'm very grateful that Olan has such a concerned and compassionate doctor. He knew I was stressed and he kept reassuring me. Olan was in surgery for about an hour. Dr. Dean came back and told me that what they found was that Olan's abdomen was full of blood, old-ish blood. Apparently he had been bleeding slowly over the last 24 hours. They flushed it out and then watched for half an hour to see where the blood was coming from but there was no active bleeding. So they closed him up. Dr. Dean explained what he thinks happened. When the colon is removed for cancer patients, everything including the rectum is removed (the rectum is the part of the intestine that connects the anus to the large intestine). The rectum has a large vein and large artery as well as the nerves that affect urinary and sexual function. When the type of surgery that Olan had is performed, a small portion of the rectum is left--where the veins and nerves are. The surgeon has to connect or seal off many smaller veins that branch out at the top of the rectum. Sometimes those veins begin to bleed. Dr. Dean said that it isn't uncommon on about the 5th day after surgery for some bleeding to occur because some clots will start breaking of as the body heals. Usually the body can compensate for this small blood loss. Dr. Dean felt confident that Olan would be fine after this set-back. Olan will probably be in the hospital until Monday. He called me this morning and said that he will probably be allowed to eat today. Wednesday was a pretty scary day for me. But I think things will be better now. Olan is very appreciative of all the words of comfort and encouragement everyone has sent to him (and so am I). Pugmire (----) slr4g@cc.usu.edu ( >__< ) Ribbit ^^ ~~ ^^ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Rebecca Mikkelsen" Subject: (cdc) (Fwd) Another Olan update Date: 16 Apr 1998 11:03:24 -0700 Dear Family and Friends, After Olan's last surgery, he wasn't getting better. Tuesday afternoon Dr. Dean ordered a CT scan (an xray where the vic...ah...patient drinks a solution containing a contrast and then pictures are taken). Nothing showed up on the scan. The scan was repeated Wednesday morning and still nothing. That afternoon he had an ultrasound and that showed a spot of "something" but the doctor and the radiologist couldn't agree on what they thought it was--the radiologist said bowel leakage, the doctor said infection. So last night (Wednesday) Olan had another surgery. The doctor found that the tissues on the back part of the pouch he had created had pulled from the sutures and that there was bowel leakage AND infection. This is also where the bleeding was coming from the first time, but they couldn't see it before. So the doctor performed a temporary ileostomy (he has a "baggie")--in a few months, when the pouch is healed, Olan will have another surgery to close that. Dr. Dean warned us several times before the first surgery that because Olan has been on Prednisone (a steroid) for so long, his tissues might not be able to hold up to surgery and if the doc had any doubts, he would perform a temporary ileostomy. Well, he thought Olan was in better shape than he was. In retrospect, the ileostomy probably should have been done the first time. But in every respect Olan *looked* far healthier than he really was. Even "on paper" he wasn't that ill. There was nothing to indicate that he was full of infection--he had no fever, his abdomen was no more tender and extended than one would expect after having two surgeries. The doctor said he will be in the hospital at least another 7-10 days and then will need to recuperate at home for an additional 6-8 weeks. When I checked on him this morning he looked so much better than he had for a long time. The doctor feels confident that Olan is "all fixed" now and that he should start getting better. We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers on Olan's behalf. Our St. Pyres site, the Logan Jay Cees, had a... (I laugh when I say it.) Fire. yes, a Fire! This is not a recient thing, however. They had this fire about a year ago and did not attempt to inform us that thier restrooms and kitchen are now blakened and windows are missing. Had Arkasha not gone by to look at the condition of the building we would have never known. The Logan fire marshal informed us that they had been told not to accept renters until it was repaired. I feel that they were dishonest in thier dealings with us and as Seneschal I am vexed greatly. The new site is the Wellsville School located at 90 East 100 South in Wellsville, 9 miles south of Logan off of Highway 89-91. Just at the mouth of Sardine canyon. Jurgi ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Rebecca Mikkelsen" Subject: (cdc) Demos Date: 20 Apr 1998 11:29:45 -0700 I got a call this morning from the Cub Scout Day Camp director. The theme this year is "Sherwood Forest". They would like us to do a 20- to 25-minute demo during the lunch break at camp. The dates are June 25, 26, and 27. The times would be (approximately) between 6 and 7 pm on the 25th and 26th (day camp is in the evening those two days) and between noon and 1 pm on the 27th. I can't offer this demo to Squire William and Lady Isabeau for two reasons: 1-they are having the Shire of Otherhill's Birthday event at their place that weekend and 2-it is a long way to come for a 20- to 25-minute demo. From experience, I would say that the Cub Scouts will want to see fighting, armor, and weapons. I also think a short talk on the Scout Oath and the Knight's Code would be appropriate. Please let me know if there is any interest in doing this demo. Summerfest is coming up on June 18-20. It has been a shire tradition to do a demo on the opening (Thursday) night of Summerfest. We've done this demo for at least 5 years (perhaps longer--do the shire historians know when we did the first Summerfest demo?). Is there any interest in doing this again? If we want to do this demo, we need to contact the Summerfest committee as soon as possible so that they can reserve space for us. In the past, Landolf and I have been able to do a lot of demos on our own. We might grab our son or one other fighter and then put on a demo without a lot of help from the shire. But Landolf will not be doing any fighting for a long time and probably will not be feeling up to doing *anything* for several months. So the burden of demos will fall on the shire. If no one wants to do these demos, it doesn't matter to me. I just need to make arrangements one way or another. This has been a message from the (unpaid) personal secretary of the Deputy Seneschal in charge of organizing demos. Rebecca ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Randy Chabries Subject: Re: (cdc) Demos Date: 20 Apr 1998 14:20:42 -0700 From where I sit, I think we need to do as many demos as possible if for no other reason than to convince people we are somewhere close to the realms of sanity. I may be able to do the cub scout demo, but 20-25 min. is not very long. I would like to do the Summerfest demo for sure. As far as other demos, we will need to arrange for the shire to do some, at least in my opinion. The schools in the south end of our valley are interested in us doing some whole-school kinds of things. I know that through the summer and next year I will be somewhat available. (I've used up all my leave this year.) The farther in advance I know, the greater the liklihood I can make it. Any other takers? Rand P.S. This just in from Our good Kingdom Seneschal... I've included the entire list just incase anyone is interested in the other groups boundaries. Burgermeister Meister Jurgi The Kingdom Seneschal writes... Sorry gang, I meant to attach this with your report. Please get comments back to me by May 1. Agnese Branch Boundaries Within Artemisia as of 15 April 1998 (AS XXXII) Colorado Shire of Dael Beorht - Those portions of Delta, Dolores, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel counties, Colorado that fall within 814XX zip codes. Shire of Draca Mor - Those portions of Garfield, Mesa and Rio Blanco that fall within 815XX zip codes. Moab, Utah may not be claimed as part of a Colorado shire. Corpora does not allow shires to cross state lines. ***There is a proposal before the Crowns of Artemisia and the Outlands to change the territory of the Colorado branches, which has not yet been approved. These changes are as follows: Shire of Dael Beorht - Delta, Dolores, Gunnison, Montrose, Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel counties, and those portions of Hinsdale and Saguache counties that fall within 812XX zip codes. Shire of Draca Mor - Garfield, Mesa and Moffat counties, and those portions of Eagle, Lake, Pitkin, Routt and Summit counties that fall within 816XX zip codes. All remaining territory in the state is claimed by the Outlands. Idaho Barony of Arn Hold -Ada, Adams, Boise, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, Valley and Washington counties, Idaho. Barony of One Thousand Eyes -Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Caribou, Clark, Franklin, Fremont, Jefferson, Madison, Oneida, Power and Teton counties, Idaho. Shire of Twae Linnes - Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka and Twin Falls counties, Idaho. *** Disputed territory: Both Arn Hold and Twae Linnes claim King Hill and Glenns Ferry in Elmore county. Since there is no one listed in the Artemisian Directory in these towns in either Arn Hold or Twae Linnes, I have kept the boundary along the county line. Both One Thousand Eyes and Twae Linnes claim Raft River/American Falls in Power County. Since there is no one listed in the Artemisian Directory in this town in either One Thousand Eyes or Twae Linnes, I have kept the boundary along county lines. The proposed area of Villi Ruusu falls logically in Lemhi County, but I have not received a proposal from the residents of this area yet. Twae Linnes and One Thousand Eyes both claim territory in Custer County, but neither appears to have members there. Let's leave these areas unclaimed for now and see if Villi Ruusu grows into them. Jackson, Wyoming may not be claimed by One Thousand Eyes. If it seems likely that a canton would be viable in the area, we can petition the Society Seneschal to allow the Barony to cross the state line. There would have to be a strong case for the petition. All zip codes in 835XX and 838XX are claimed by An Tir. Montana Shire of Bronzehelm - Big Horn, Carbon, Rosebud, Stillwater, Treasure and Yellowstone counties, Montana. Shire of Crystal Crags -Flathead and Lincoln counties, and the portion of Lake County with 599XX zip codes, Montana. Barony of Sentinel's Keep -Granite, Mineral, Missoula, Ravalli and Sanders counties, and the portion of Lake County with 598XX zip codes, Montana. Shire of Silver Keep - Gallatin, Madison and Park counties, Montana. Shire of Stan Wyrm - Cascade, Choteau, Fergus, Glacier, Hill, Judith Basin, Liberty, Pndera, Sweet Grass, Teton, Toole and Wheatland counties, Montana. Incipient Shire of Castelleone - Broadwater, Jefferson, Lewis & Clark and Powell counties, Montana. Incipient Shire of Eir Dun - Deer Lodge and Silver Bow counties, Montana. ***Disputed territory: Castelleone and Stan Wyrm both claim Augusta in Lewis & Clark County. Since neither appears to have members there, I have kept the border along the county line There is some talk of a canton of Sentinel's Keep in Lemhi County, Idaho. If the area is viable as a canton, we can petition the Society Seneschal for a variance. Further discussion must be held with the residents of the area. Silver Keep may not claim Mammoth, Wyoming, as it crosses state lines. The "interested areas" in Big Timber, and Havre, are too inactive to lay claim to territory. Should they become viable in the future, we can adjust boundaries logically. All remaining territory in the state is Crown lands. Utah Shire of Cote du Ciel - Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties, Utah. Shire of Gryphon's Lair - Davis, Morgan and Weber counties, Echo (84024) and Henefer (84033) in Summit County, Utah. Barony of Loch Salann - Salt Lake, Summit except for Echo (84024) and Henefer (84033), Tooele and Wasatch counties, Utah. Canton of Arrow's Flight - Utah County, Utah. Incipient Shire of Ard Ruadh - Washington County, Utah. Incipient College of Blackstone Citadel - Carbon County, Utah. Incipient Shire of Dragon's Rest - Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties, Utah. *** There is no disputed territory in Utah. While residents of Preston, Idaho have played with Cote du Ciel, that shire may not claim territory in Idaho. Kane County is claimed by Atenveldt, and all remaining territory in the state is Crown lands. Wyoming Shire of Otherhill -Uintah County and the portion of Sweetwater county in the 829XX-831XX zip code range. *** There is no disputed territory in Wyoming. The folks in Mammoth are too inactive to claim territory. Remaining territory in 821XX and 829XX is Crown lands. Negotiations are underway with the Outlands to add territory to wit: all of 825XX,and specific zip codes in 823XX and 826XX, an area which covers Fremont county. Remainder of the state is claimed by the Outlands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Lowe, Jeff" Subject: Re: (cdc) Demos Date: 21 Apr 1998 09:47:45 MDT > Date sent: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 14:20:42 -0700 > From: Randy Chabries > To: cdc@lists.xmission.com > Subject: Re: (cdc) Demos > Send reply to: cdc@lists.xmission.com > From where I sit, I think we need to do as many demos as possible if for > no other reason than to convince people we are somewhere close to the > realms of sanity.
