It seemed to happen when off road, but I could not predict when. It usually occurred at about 25-35 miles on a trail ride. Someone mentioned that it might be a loop seal in the vent hose on the carb. I'm not a mechanic so I took it to the local Suzuki shop. They took the vent hose from that appears to go up into the frame under the tank and routed it down. I've only been riding once since they did this and it has not happened yet. Also, the hose was filled with gas when it was disconnected which seemed suspicious. Something cheap to try. First after I had run the bike at 75+ for about an hour on the interstate I ran out of fuel and before I could get the petcock switched to reserve the bike died and I pulled over to the side of the road. Set to prime and got 'er started up again and switched back to the normal setting on the petcock and could only put along at about 5 mpg as the bike would not respond to any more throttle. I guess I vapor locked the carb (or something like that) as after letting the bike sit for about a half an hour I started it back up and the bike ran as usual. This never happened again which I have run the tank to reserve but I was in town and not running the beast at speed for an extended period of time so I ignored to first occurrence. Over the weekend I went riding (which was great!) but towards the end of the day after running at very reduced speeds, mainly in first and second gear, the bike began to "load up" and hesitate. This was just like the bike was acting in the first scenario but this time I could run it at 70+ on the freeway and all was well. However, if I stopped at a stoplight or just wanted to run at a reduced RPM the bike would load up and die. Every now and then the bike would seem to run normally and then about 15 mins later, back to acting up. I was stuck out in the boonies and needed to get back to town so I continued to ride the tempermental beast. Just for grins, I tried to fiddle with the idle adjustment but this had absolutely no effect on the engine idle, which made me think that a part of the carb had broken. I am not the most proficient at mechanic work but this does seem strange. Is there an issue with the DR's CV carb regarding riding style etc..? Tonight I started the bike up after letting it sit for 24 hours. The bike fired right up and runs great. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the problem. So far this seems to be when I have run the bike at extremes and not during regular riding. I don't think that should make a difference but what do I know. Thanks for any input. Any comments on those?? The Acerbis hand guards are well made and very strong.. I had them on my DR350 as well. I had a get off in the woods and bent the handlebars a bit.. The Acerbis guards were barely scratched and the clutch lever unharmed. The only problem is they aren't making the current Rally hand guards anymore. They have a new one to replace them though. There are still some of the old ones in stores and mail order, but you might be hard pressed to find certain colors. I also have the wind spoilers on mine too. They seem to keep some of the cold air off of your hands when riding in the cold weather. I just put them on my DR650 and had a hard time finding purple ones to match my '98. But i did. >I hope to do plenty of forestry road riding in the Rockies. That should be fun. I have an RKA tail bag and it is good quality but the RKA owner is a jerk and told me I had must have had a mental problem when I questioned the fit of a tank bag on a friends bike.. And that was at a show IN PERSON! He was nasty. But, that said, his products are great. I have not tried my tail pack on my DR yet.. I have the factory rack on mine too. Good luck! The TOTL rack fits "sideways" greatly increasing the surface area for a duffel or tailbag. http://www.cbtimports.com/002.htm Tim specializes in quick detach system modular systems. So, he's making a quick detach plate that will mount on the DR650 accessory rack allowing for quick exchange to a GIVI box, TOTL or just the bare rack. His system use dzus fasteners. I've only got good things to say about the aerostitch tank panniers. I use the large sized ones on my KLR. Because of the shape of the tank, I just run both top straps in fron of the tank cap. I connect the bunjee's to muy skid plate. The bags hold lots if you pack smart, keep the weight forward and low - which offsets your rear luggage, and they keep your knees protected and out of the wind and rain on long trips.
