I am going to be traveling to Gunnison, Colorado next month, and am curious to what jetting, and needle position a '99 DR350 dirt model requires. The exhaust, airbox, and muffler are total stock. Last year I took a '98 DR350 dirt model up there, total stock like the '99. It ran fine except if you cracked the trottle quickly between 1/2 to 3/4 throttle it would bog, and then it would take off. Base camp is at 8500' and some of the trails that we ride could reach up to 12000' Can someone explain difference in needles, and how you can tell what clip that it is set in? I have read recent post explaining that they are shimming the needle. Is this only nessessary on the street models with the CV carb, or is this on the dirt models? Could it actually be to stop something (like a damaged air >filter) being sucked in ?? There is not enough heat in fire after it goes thru a screen. The screen is simply a fire-stop. Fire can't get thru a screen, no way it will get thru a carb jet into your gas. Fire can't go thru a metal orifice. I've been riding motorcycles (some that backfired a LOT!!) for 30 years and I've never never heard of backfire igniting a carb except when there was raw gas all over the outside. The screen is there to prevent the air filter from catching fire. Filters can burn, depending what kind of solvents are used for cleaning (....like gasoline...??). I removed the screen on my XR400 and on my XR600 and both times evidence appeared (scorched inside surface of the filter) that fire had visited....... But if you want more power, then more power to you! A significant worry however, is making absolutely sure you don't leave any little wires loose when you cut the screen. They will eventually get sucked into the motor. It's very difficult to be sure of this, and I recommend (after doing it myself) that you buy an aftermarket filter cage that already has no screen. It is only the dual purpose models. The reason is that they have only one groove therefore no adjustment so a washer under the clip will raise the needle giving a richer mixture. This not done on the dirt model, its needle has five grooves to choose from. the stock setting would be the third groove down or the middle groove. For your high elevation trip to Colorado you could try the second groove for a leaner mixture.
