Bob, yes, corresponding to my german manual the chain tension of 1-1.5 inches should be checked when on the side stand with no weight on it. Concerning the gearing: The stock gearing for the old DR350 is 47/14 with a 110 chain. The (old)DR350S has 43/14 with 108 links. The smaller the front sprocket gets, the faster the chain wears. If you buy the next chain kit you could go to 47/14 - it is pretty much the same ratio as 44/13. Hope this helps Rainer _________ Bob schrieb: > Hi DR Guy's I just changed the gearing on my 96DR350SE to 13/44 for > some tight woods riding. I rode a dual sport ride in Zaleski, Ohio one weekend and planned to ride another dual sport event in conjunction with the National Enduro in McArthur, Ohio, but it rained. That is another story. I have a full size Chevrolet van, with 200,000 miles. I have hauled bikes and gas cans a great many of those miles. I started out with five gallons of Unocal 92 octane unleaded premium in a can and the bike about half full of the same fuel. Our gas in California is oxygenated, whatever that means. I know it smells bad and gives you a metallic taste in the mouth when you get a sniff. I rode the event in Zaleski. I filled the bike up to start and topped it off on the second day. I didn't get to ride very much in McArthur. I drained the can into the bike. I never added any gas after McArthur. I left McArthur and drove to Kansas City to visit relatives. I went from there to York, Nebraska. I left York early in the morning. I had a difficult time keeping my eyes open. I stopped and had coffee later and felt much better. After another hour of driving I was feeling very tired and sleepy. I had been away from home for nearly two weeks and thought maybe I just needed to rest. The next day I started out fine, but within two hours I was getting sleepy again. By now I suspected that something was wrong. I checked the exhaust system and under the hood and found nothing amiss. When I got near the bike I immediately got that metallic taste in my mouth. There were no leaks on the bike, but the smell was there, I guess from the tank and carb vents. I screwed the gas cap down on a plastic sandwich bag and continued my travels with no more troubles. I have hauled the same bike and gas can, in the same van all over the United States and I always use Unocal 92 unleaded premium. York, Nebraska in on the Great Plains. From there you go up over the Rocky Mountains. Did the great change in elevation cause my problem? Frankly I had the shit scared out of me. I could have went off the road and died. I know that from now on I am going to drain all the gas out of the carb and seal off the tank vent. I hope you will post the whole story and experiences soon. Some questions about your mods: Factory kit: what does it contain ? Just the needle and main jets, or did you change other parts too (diaphragm spring, pilot jet,...) ? How load is the IDS II compared to the stock muffler ? You write that you lowered your bike 24 'clicks'. What do you mean ? My stock rear shock has kind of 2 big nuts that have to be loosend and then turned to lower the bike. Maybe its just my english why I didn't get it. Rainer - - to unsubscribe to dr, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe dr" in the body of the message.
