On "The Mantovani Scene", I think. As for Percy Faith, you've got to get hold of "The Beatles Album" -- the "elevator music" version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is hilarious! Mr. Faith did do some genuinely good stuff -- I've got a 1950s 10" of Latin music which is superb. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info exotica" in the message. # Postings must go to exotica@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 10:38:16 -0500 From: Brian Phillips Subject: Re: (exotica) Re: exotica-digest V2 #76 And let's not forget the occasional cut-out bin find. Most likely thinking that NO ONE would ever reissue such an insanely obscure record, he stole the cover art from "Attilio Mineo Conducts Man In Space With Sounds" http://www.jackdiamond.com/attilio.htm and changed it just a tad and made it their very 1st album cover. I _think_ I have a pretty good Mantovani record; something from the later 60s with "Green Tambourine" on it, and assorted other slightly psychedelic songs, late Beatles hits, etc. It might have been Percy Faith, though, and I doubt it's here at school or I'd confirm. Even my parents, who always listened to the "elevator music" radio station when I was growing up (and look what it did to me) and had plenty of garden-variety 101 Strings record (no psychedelic or sexy ones, of course) were hesitant about Mantovani. - -Jordana eero67@geocities.com www.geocities.com/SoHo/2157 ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info exotica" in the message. # Postings must go to exotica@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 11:31:30 -0500 From: NATHAN MINER Subject: (exotica) Re: I bought it at this cool store.... Speaking of Brel, there is a movie from 1975: "Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris". It's a musical revue presenting a batch of his songs -- no plot or dialog to interfere, just takes advantage of film to open things up a bit. Brel is one of the performers, along with Elly Stone, Mort Shuman and Joe Masiell. To be honest, I've never heard of any of them. Mantovani's father was a professor of music in Italy, and settled in England as a result of getting stranded here during WW1 while touring with an Opera Company. Mantovani was a professional classical violinist at 16, and went on to conduct theatre orchestras for Gaumont cinemas during the 30's. In 1950 he signed for Decca, and a 1970's catalogue of his albums runs to 53 different titles. I don't think he had any jazz roots to be close to. He also seemingly never recorded "Third Man" or "Caravan", and the only even remotely exotic track he ever did was "Yellow bird". I'd be the first to admit that not much of his output is challengingly exciting. I wonder if the glut of his records on sale in the London area is due to the emergence of radio stations like Melody Radio, who play this sort of stuff on FM stereo all the time. People are abandoning vinyl for easy listening radio, especially pensioners (senior citizens) who tend to retire to smaller houses during which transition a nearby thrift gets the vinyl. Was it Abe Lincoln that said "For people who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing that they like"? Applies 100% to Mantovani. Purchased in 1959, the first LP that I owned was a Mantovani LP when I was a young child. It contained gorgeous renditions of 2 of my favorite songs, "Greensleeves" and Rogers & Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening". I still thoroughly enjoy that LP. Mantovani's recordings were released on London Records here in Canada. I believe that those recordings were some of the first stereo recordings to be released here. They were popular for at least 2 reasons, other than musical achievement. They were considered to be of audiophile quality for that era. Adults used them to demonstrate the marvellous sound of their new audio systems. Secondly, during the 1950's and 1960's, hundreds of thousands of British people immigrated to North America and especially Canada. They would buy Mantovani LP's because they were familiar with his work. Mantovani was a small piece of home to these British immigrants. Mantovani's popularity was justifiable, even though most of his work has not dated very well. I've seen it used here and there since I was a teenager, and while I had my rude adolescent theory about it, I don't think that's quite right. Or is it? What's the story here? MovieLens, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota, is "a free personalized movie recommendation service" that uses technology called Collaborative Filtering. The service works by querying you about movies you have seen and what you thought of them. This information is then compared to other MovieLens users' answers and ranked to arrive at a list of personalized recommendations for you. Your personal selections may then be limited by genre, film or video format, and currency. Many recommended titles also provide links to promotion pages for the movies or the Internet Movie Database, which provide additional information about the movies that can help the undecided in their selection. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info exotica" in the message. # Postings must go to exotica@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 17:57:32 +0000 From: bag@hubris.net Subject: Re: (exotica) regionalism >>found a Percy Faith Album which may make it onto the show. The full name of this label seems to be: Mad Deadly Worldwide Communist Gangster Computer God. But why bother typing that out every time? This first release is presumable a reissue of some old spoken word LP from decades past; legality of these issues could be considered dubious. Criswell has Ed Wood connections and made way-out predictions on TV in the 50s. You can hear him reading these predictions in a very sedate voice. The air in front of your head might turn just slightly weird.
