Fans of gallows humor, be sure to read to the end for the suggestions of songs that were omitted. Radio network's list of 'inappropriate songs' hits sour note with some By Todd Inoue BayArea.com Published: Sept. 17, 2001, 6:15 p.m. A program director at a local Clear Channel radio station confirmed that the company disbursed a list of "inappropriate songs" that shouldn't get airplay following last week's terrorist attacks on the East Coast. "It was a list that was distributed so that we wouldn't have to listen to every song and make judgment calls," said Gary Schoenwetter, program director for San Francisco-based and Clear Channel- owned Star 101.3 who received the list this week. "It served as a guide in deciding what was and wasn't appropriate." Schoenwetter adds that stations are not banned from playing any songs. They can, and do, stray from the line-up, he said, and it is far from a be-all, end- all list. "Had we been a station that played Edwin Starr's 'War,' we would have left that one in," Schoenwetter said. "It was distributed under the guise of 'Use this list at your discretion,' like any corporate memo. It wasn't handed out as the hand of God." Flooding the inbox of music lovers and censorship opponents, the list, first published by F-- kedCompany.com, came from Clear Channel, the owner and operator of 1170 stations nationally and one of the largest media organizations worldwide. The song list was sent to all Clear Channel radio stations, advising program directors about what songs would be inappropriate to broadcast after the East Coast tragedy. Some songs include references to war ("War Pigs," "Sunday Bloody Sunday") and bombs ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me"). Others refer to peace ("Imagine," "Peace Train," "What a Wonderful World") and celebrating ("Dancing in the Streets"). Program director Larry Sharp of San Francisco-based, Susquehana-owned rock 'n' roll station 107.7 "The Bone" saw the list and feels some of the choices exclude songs that could help in the healing process. "I agree there are some songs [that are inappropriate] but I thought a lot of them went too far," he said. "When you pull 'Stairway to Heaven,' that's a song people play at funerals. You want to hear a song like that during these times." A corporate Clear Channel representative could not be reached for comment or to confirm the list of songs published on F--kedCompany.com. The company released a public statement regarding the list, however. "The American entertainment industry, including music, cinema and television, regularly incorporates violence and tragedy in lyrics, plots and storylines," the statement reads. "Given the environment, a Clear Channel program director took it upon himself to identify a number of songs that certain markets or individuals might find insensitive today." "This is not a mandate nor was the list generated out of corporate radio offices," the statement continued. "It was a grassroots effort that was apparently circulated by program directors. It's the discretion of each program director and general manager to take polls of his or her market and if so for how long." The following songs were reportedly listed as having "questionable" content: (omitted) [readers get a chance to vote:] What song should be added to this list? The new site will be basically broken down into 5 sections: 1. whistlers 2. my records 3. fred lowery scrap book 4. MP3 sound gallery 5. a link to a Live365 webcast clicking this link will take you to section two, "my records", which is pretty much my current collection of whistling and birdsong recordings http://www.basichip.com/whistling/records/records33.htm it is broken down into 4 groups, 33s, 45s, 78s and what few CDs there are. you'll find cover scans, label scans, album info, track lists and soon there will be selected tracks on MP3 you can access as well as personal reviews and a "rate-o-record" grading scale. Keepers of websites who have included Fred Lowery on there pages, feel free to direct anybody to these listings. His discography is getting quite long and I honestly do not think there is any other listing like it in cyberspace. The nerds at the Orawhistle mailing list will eat this up so long for now # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 20:43:46 -0700 From: "basichip" Subject: (exotica) Fred Lowery Scrapbook here is the link to the fred lowery scrapbook http://www.basichip.com/whistling/scrapbook/scrapbook.htm some great photos, all scanned from a book on him. Yes, XM does indeed have eclectic tastes. I am excited and fearful in a small way of this at the same time, though. I rather like the attitude of the people running XM, I just hope their concept floats (corporate radio tends to stink, let's do it better), this could lead to another "WE decide what's hip" type of atmosphere, that could become confining as what has preceded. Did anyone else think of "Freberg Underground: Pay Radio" when they read about Satellite Radio? The last reaction I had to an LP that was this favourable = was when I bought 'Get Carter', so theres been a lot of grumbling in the = last 18 months. Its very good, I can see why Jane F was so leased when she got it. = Some top groovy tunes, some nice Bossa Nova action with Dud showing off = over the top. some hilarious lyrics, I think Monty Python may have based an = entire Canon on the leaping nuns song, and 'Bedazzled' itself which Peter = Cook sings deadpan is just wonderful 'You fill me with inertia', 'why don't = you leave off'. I've got nothing to add to the bootleg question either way, the sleeve = does look photocopied, but they have added some text to it (a web site and = some charitable bits). You're the best. Okay here we go. 1. Are you a musician? Explain I'm an actor. (comedian not a comic) Grew up watching mostly comedies, spy, sci-fi and mysteries on TV and guess I like songs that remind me of old TV and movie background music. I play piano, sing and used to play sax in high school. 2. Space-age/exotic LP/CD that turned you on to this? My brother gave me Esquivel's Space Age Pop cd, and I found the RCA Space Age Pop compilations and thought, "Oh my God, I didn't know this stuff existed" ! I've been searching for stuff like it ever since. 3. This list could help you more by... Keep on listing your favorite finds, and telling me where to buy LP's in my new home area of New Jersey. 4. Other exotica/things you collect Comedian biographies and TV books. Used to collect comedy posters, stills and wacky packages. 5. Unrelated music genres/acts you like Spy, Crime, Space, Percussion, Wacky Stereo..wait, that's related musical genres...um...The Flying Karamotzov Brother's juggling act. 6. What are you just dying to tell us? Frank Zappa and Leon Redbone are the same person. Redbone, just got sick of being Zappa and killed off the character. 7. Initials you prefer, CD or LP? And why do you? Is it a sound quality consideration? The aesthetics of LP art? The supposed clarity of CDs? Tell us more! LP. Can't find the good stuff on CD as much. Also like to hear the crackles and pops. Reminds me of my youth. Ah, life. 8. Own a fez? If so, what color, texture and tassel color? Describe it or other lounge-wear of which you are proud? Yes, own a fez. Was once a member of the L.A. tent "Way Out West" of "The Sons Of The Desert" Laurel and Hardy group. 9. Shaken or stirred? Had my first martini last December at a "TV Funhouse" closing night party. I had stirred. Gave me a headache the next day. Guess I should have had shaken. 10. I clean my LPs with ... Alcohol and paper towels. A record store employee in LA told me to use lighter fluid though. 11. My home page URL is: Don't have one. Give me a break. I just figured how to post on this list. Have had a cd-copying drive for over a year and haven't even been able to figure out how to copy LPs yet. I download into a wave file and the darn software can't find it. I'm pissed! Sorry. Is "pissed" a swear word? 12. I have a Licence To ... Drive. Pretty boring, but wierd question. Hate to leave on that note so I'll leave on G Sharp. Laaaaaaaa!!!!!!!
