Technically untrained but mesmerized by melodic magic, the students sing from-the-heart renditions of tunes by the BEACH BOYS, Paul McCartney, DAVID BOWIE, Fleetwood Mac, the Bay City Rollers, and others. They accompany themselves with the shimmering gamelan-like chimes of Orff percussion instruments and elemental rock trimmings arranged by their "gypsy" music teacher, Hans Fenger. These recordings, caught on 2-track tape in a Western Canada school gym, weren't staged to achieve money or fame, sell albums or land a record contract. These kids played music because they loved it. Innocent, flawed and bittersweet, guided by Fenger's unsuspecting genius, these recordings brim with charm and adolescent elan, sparked by flashes of lo-fi Spectorian majesty and PET SOUNDS subtlety. Call it folk art, outsider, or campfire rock -- the labels don=B9t matter. These are gorgeous, heavenly artifacts. The Langley Schools Music Project was produced for first commercial issue by IRWIN CHUSID (Raymond Scott, Esquivel, Shaggs, Songs in the Key of Z). The package includes a 16-page color booklet detailing the story of the recordings, and includes photos of the kids in action. The tracks were newly remastered and reverberate with an astonishing range of fidelity. These recordings were originally contained on two 12" LPs, pressed in a limited run for students, classmates, teachers, and parents. They were never intended for exposure outside the Langley region. However, under a trustee arrangement with Langley School District #35, royalty payments from the sale of this CD will be used to finance music scholarship or purchase instruments for the schools and/or pay pro-rated shares to participating former students.=20 COMMENTS ABOUT THE LANGLEY SCHOOLS MUSIC PROJECT "The backing arrangement is astounding. Coupled with the earnest if lugubrious vocal performance you have a piece of art that I couldn't have conceived of, even with half of Colombia's finest export products in me." --David Bowie (on the Langley students' rendition of "Space Oddity") "The effect of all those young voices singing 'Calling Occupants' is charming." --Richard Carpenter "This is beauty. This is truth. This is music that touches the heart in a way no other music ever has, or ever could." --John Zorn "The Langley Schools Music Project is the celebration of passion over skill. They understand these songs better than the people that wrote them. This is real folk music." --Penn Jillette (Penn and Teller) "It is very evident that the [Orff] instruments were not used as they would be used in the Orff-Schulwerk approach. AOSA has no desire to be connected with this recording ... Thank you for your interest in the American Orff-Schulwerk Association." --Executive Director American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA) tracks: 1) Venus and Mars/Rock Show (Paul McCartney & Wings) 02) Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys) 03) God Only Knows (The Beach Boys) 04) Space Oddity (David Bowie) 05) The Long and Winding Road (The Beatles) 06) Band On The Run Paul McCartney & Wings) 07) In My Room (The Beach Boys) 08) I'm Into Something Good (Earl-Jean/Herman's Hermits) 09) Saturday Night (Bay City Rollers) 10) I Get Around (The Beach Boys) 11) Mandy (Barry Manilow) 12) Help Me, Rhonda (The Beach Boys) 13) Desperado (The Eagles) 14) You're So Good To Me (The Beach Boys) 15) Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond) 16) To Know Him Is To Love Him (Teddy Bears) 17) Rhiannon (Fleetwood Mac) 18) You're Sixteen * (Johnny Burnette/Ringo Starr) 19) Little Deuce Coupe * (The Beach Boys) 20) Wildfire (Michael Martin Murphy) 21) Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft (The Recognized Anthem of World Contact Day) (Klaatu/The Carpenters) total time: 68:41 [* bonus tracks on Basta edition] # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 12:34:34 +0200 From: Johan Dada Vis Subject: (exotica) anyone knows the nationality of Torrero Brass? We've had issues before on this very list when there were misunderstandings partly because online, tone of voice and other nuances are lost. I've had those problems myself. People misreading my sarcasm or deadpan humor. This new member Doug did announce himself as either a comic or a comedian (though he didn't explain the distinction). (Actually this isn't unprecedented on this list. I think our former member BJ was simply one of the great put-down comedians of all time. She was sort of like that Stuttering John guy on Howard Stern. Brilliant at getting people angry at her. It was all a show.I admit I fell for it. Fell right into her trap. If only I'd seen that glint in her eye when she made all those ridiculous statements.) (And my friend Moritz was just a German Brother Theodore.) But still, to believe Doug, you'd have to believe that Frank Zappa's death was a hoax like Elvis's or the moon landing or Celine Dion's pregnancy or John Travolta impregnating his own wife or that story I heard last week involving David Lynch and Butterfinger candy bars. I've taken both north and south shore routes, although I must admit the last time we went to Quebec was so long ago, we weren't looking for Tiki bars! Actually its been too long and a return visit is long overdue, so this may be a excuse to stop along the way... If you want more of Dave Pike's sitar stuff you need to listen to Volker Kreigel - Pike's sitar and guitar player who made records of his own. And Pike's Infra Red is a great LP as is Got the Feeling. Both mix funky jazz with some freestyling that goes over the top now and then but generally is pretty restrained. Seem to recall a thread a while back about James Taylor Quartet, just in case you are interested, they are playing the Mean fiddler on Oct 4th. Whoever started that thread said they were excellent live, as i recall. You might want to check out the www.thehorsehospital.com - looks like they are having a few events that would be of interest to listers. I found out about the horse hospital from a shop called Last Chance saloon in Lower marsh at the back of Waterloo. if you've never been there, its well worth a look. They carry all sorts of counter culture stuff, literature, clothes, art, housewares. They usually carry a massive selection of Vince Ray and Coop merchandise. They are relocating soon, so apologies if you visit and find them closed. If anyone else in London hears of anything that would be of interest to the list can you please post details. BTW did anyone go to the Tiki central thing at Trader Vics? Be seeing you. It's a wonderful record, stem to stern. What I have heard of his newest album, "Peligroso" on Ubiquity is also great and a whole lot easier to find! It is good (although I've only listened to about half of it so far), and much along the lines of the first one. So far, the Banco De Gaia remix of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is my favourite track, but that could change. And there's a version of Denny's Quiet Village (Justin Robertson Revtone Remix) that's completely unrecognisable... cheryl # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 20:06:50 -0700 From: Kevin Crossman Subject: Re: (exotica) Electro Lounge Vol. 2 cheryl wrote: > It is good (although I've only listened to about half of it so far), and > much along the lines of the first one. I must admit that I was pretty underwhelmed by vol. 1 -- I think the "martin denny" song had like .25 seconds of a sample and the rest was just dance music (not bad -- but not exactly exotica either). This volume based on the samples at Amazon.com seems quite a bit better. It helps, too, that there are three Les Baxter songs. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MG9T/thesearcfortheul/ - -Kevin - -- *********************************************************** * Kevin Crossman kevin@kevdo.com * * http://www.kevdo.com - The Narrow Interest Portal * * Lip Balm Anonymous, Ultimate Mai Tai, Exotica Archive * *********************************************************** # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 10:23:41 +0100 From: G.R.Reader@bton.ac.uk Subject: (exotica) Re: Dave Pike Set Mathar (known in these parts as 'The Mighty..') is on the LP 'Noisy Silence Gentle Noise', be warned the rest of the LP is very mellow Vibes led Jazz, there is nothing even remotely similar on it. If you can get the 7 of Mathar then I'd say get that and look for the other stuff mentioned. (or on 12 with the Fat Boy Slim remix if you like that sort of thing, mind you thats a couple of years old now). Its funny the single should surface in the US now as its been long gone in the UK.
