People have called me this for six years and even though it refers to an Egyptian WOMAN, which is what I get for not reading my Bible closely when asked for a name for my e-mail account, a whole lot of people call me Hagar. Oh well, I could have ended up with Phanuel, if you want a real obscure biblical name. Sept. 11th rolls around and not one but two people mention to me, "did you know that Hagar was the mother of Islam?" and both of them did this on separate days and also happened to both work for our Legal department. That isn't why I took the name, by the way; I just happened to remember a sermon I heard in Virginia. Well! If I wasn't already self-conscious enough... Thank you my son for remembering my favorites. Yes that's a surprising record, recommended not just for the cool die cut and gatefold cover. But there are also a couple of very jazzy - almost crime jazzy - cuts on there. I've always been surprised actually that more "exotica" records didn't cross into jazz territory but this and one Tito Puente record are the only ones I can think of that go this far. As far as Axel's real name, I just assume it's something like Bernie Schwartz. Or Hagar Slacks. Side 2 serves up a mediocre middle-eastern tinged From Russia With Love = before rolling into a jazzed up version of Dr. No and the original Fall = Out. Both songs are kept hoppin' by a flashy brass section full of solos = and at one point, a bongo finale to wrap up Fall Out. Red-Eyed Rats spins the audiophonic tale of a female agent slowly coming = to in a dank basement where the rats scrabble nearby, eventually causing = our once-unconscious and now foggy-headed femme fatale to shriek out = loudly in terror once she realizes she shares the joint with red-eyed = rats! I've never seen it, for if I had, I would have grabbed it! Midway through your excellent write-up, I picked up the scent of Kenyon Hopkins. Chambers of Horrors and Red-Eyed Rats may have been stuck in there from his Nightmare/Panic/Shock series of horror LPs. As I usually do when a fellow exoticat tips us off to an interesting album, I immediately start digging to check availablity and get more info. So I ran across (online) a Danny Davis / Kenyon Hopkins LP called 'MUSIC OF MYSTERY MAYHEM & MURDER', which could very well be the same record you describe with a different title. Arranger, Song writer and Conductor. Irving is the brother of comedian Bill Dana (nee: William Szathmary. Bill is best remembered for his role of Jose Jiminez on the Steve Allen TV Show). Irving wrote one song that was a moderate hit, "Leave It to Love" which was based on his instrumental "Time to Dance". His specialty was what he called "symphonic swing", sometime "swingphonic swing". I first became aware of him in 1940 when he made a batch of transcriptions for Associated (Muzak). Many of them were marvellous instrumental arrangements of songs like "Mood Indigo", "Tea for Two" and "Let's Be Buddies". He also had arrangements of songs with a male vocalist (Floyd Sherman), a female vocalist (unknown) and a seven member vocal group called "The Seven Singing Serenaders". One of their songs, "I Am An American", now forgotten, would be appropriate today. They also did "The Call of the Canyon" which could be a Billy Hill number. Later, Szathmary became the A & R man for the Lang-Worth transcription company. He made many great transcriptions most of which utilized his theme and variation orchestrations. (Among his 1940 Muzak arrangements was a theme and many variations of the nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill". For Lang-Worth, he had a sensational arrangement of "Gambler's Blues" which is "St.James Infirmary". - -------------------- Cheers, Lou - ------------------- Carl Howard wrote: > The score for practically the entire series "Get Smart" was the work of Irving Szathmary. Diverse and groovy. I had the stereo turned on rather loud listening to it the first time and additionally one window of my studio was open, when the "vocal inspirations" of "Coming and Going" - in fact it sounded more like *coming* - draw the attention of some construction workers outside. That is I could tell from the smirking on their faces that it made some impression on them and was quite reliefed when the coming was finally going. :-) Mo ............................ studio ® http://moritzR.de exotica@web.de ............................ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 09:14:46 -0500 From: "Nathan Miner" Subject: Re: (exotica) Music from the OO7& James Bond Motion Pictures (review) Yeah, you might be right. Is it just that the range of possibile sounds for a quartet of Latinos singing North American show tunes is limited, and the two groups really are different--or are they the same group? I'm on a 56K dialup too. It's slow but if you're patient, I now have one kicking little CD. I actually tried to buy that Adventurers record on ebay a number of times but when I finally got it, it came broken. Anyway for me it's worth the hour it takes to download, to get that stuff. I'm waiting for the next one. Well I don't know what I'm doing right but whenever I click on a track, the computer asks me whether I want to save it to disk or some other choice. And I save it to disk. And it stays there. I discovered that you can download all the song files at once Just draw them to the screen one after the other and multiple download windows will appear (Mac!) The advantage is that you can do something else in the mean time, instead of waiting for each song to download. - --Mo ............................ studio ® http://moritzR.de exotica@web.de ............................ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of exotica-digest V2 #1069 ******************************
