Okay, Ford was right on the money about tracks such as "Red-Eyed Rats" = being exactly those tracks from the Hopkins' series of "Shock" LP's........= .. Hopkins' horror LP's were put out on the Metro label, so was this James = Bond album. Basically, this album is a mish-mash of tracks swiped from (I'm guessing) = prior Metro releases (or MGM, perhaps "Metro" was their "budget" label = knock-off?? a subsidary of MGM pictures - they use the Lion head as the = logo - the Hopkins LP's say "MGM" on the logo). Anyway, after basichip's comments, I re-examined the label on the LP and = the tracks are credited to Kenyon Hopkins (it says his "Chamber of = Horrors" is based on Orientale - I didn't notice any similarities....), = and "Monster Meeting" and "Red-Eyed Rats" are Hopkins. Also on the album = are cuts by Ray Ellis (& His Orch.) and Danny Davis (& His Orch.) who is = the only one credited on the actual cover. On the front cover towards the middle in medium-sized print is a "plus = Other Music of Mystery, Mayhem and Murder" sub-title - giving a nod = towards the Hopkins releases. - - Nate # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 10:39:52 -0500 From: "Carl Howard" Subject: Re: (exotica) Basic Friendly Persuasion Hip On this 56K dialup PC, you can't so that - you're limited to the number of downloads at once that either your browser thinks it can handle, or that the PC thinks it can handle. This number turned out to be two. Any attempt to download more than two would be greeted by a wet slap in the face and a knock on the door by a Man In Black (okay, by a stalled File Download request window that would stay there until a previous one had completed). I did go for the files from "How to Speak Hip" and "Percussion, Playful and Pretty," but it took hours to secure all the MP3s. With Earthlink charging me extra usage minutes and the phone company doing likewise, every step of the way. Indeed, this is NOT precisely how to live at all times. But at least I can't blame Basic Hip for it ! And I'll have to try that other trick once I get my G4 and my cable modem back ! This isn't something that is unique to the Macintosh as a simple right click does the same in Windows, but the number of downloads you can perform at once has a lot to do with the type of connection you have and maybe also the processer speed. My T3 connection at work seems to max out at 5 consecutive downloads, but at home with the 56K dialup I can't do more than one. Now there may be some setting in Windows that allows me to change this, but I have never seen it. In any case, I can still do other online activities during downloading at either machine. Reinhardt died in Cannes on the French riviera after suffering a heart attack, the company said. The guitarist and composer, born June 8, 1944 in Paris, was first taught how to play the piano by his father, the gypsy guitarist Django, but his mother Naguine showed him the basics of guitar playing. It was the guitar that then became the instrument of his choice, though he spent most of his life in the shadow of his father, who died when Babik was nine years old. "His compositions contained as much nostalgia and expressions of warmth like a beautiful autumn afternoon in the Fontainebleau forest," a statement from the Paris-based RDC record label said, referring to the town south of Paris near to where his father and mother are buried. Babik Reinhardt carried on the swing jazz tradition his father made famous. He participated in numerous homages to him, playing last year in the Django Reinhardt Festival at the Birdland jazz club in New York. His albums with the RDC label include Nuances, Vibration and A Night in Conover. The $50 million picture's South Korean financier, ShinCine Communications, acquired rights to Lee's likeness from Concord Moon, which represents the Bruce Lee estate and is overseen by Lee's widow, Linda Lee Cadwell, and his daughter, Shannon Lee. Now in its third draft by Korean and Japanese writers, "Dragon" will be translated and further refined for an English-language production. The project has already spent four years in development and will be the first that ShinCine has produced for the American marketplace, said company head Chul Shin. Shannon Lee said the family agreed to do this project, "because we believe in ShinCine's and Mr. Shin's enthusiasm and commitment to making a first-rate film." Bruce Lee was a veteran of Hong Kong cinema when he first reached mainstream American audiences in 1966 as Kato in the television series "The Green Hornet." He starred in films such as "Fist of Fury," "Way of the Dragon" and "Enter the Dragon." He died at 32 of a brain edema. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drummer Francis dies ORLANDO, Florida (AP) -- David "Panama" Francis, whose drumming was featured both in top Harlem nightclubs and legendary rock songs, died Tuesday after a stroke. He was 82. Francis' career spanned seven decades. He first reached fame in the late 1930s playing with the Savoy Sultans -- described by Dizzy Gillespie as "the swingingest band there ever was" -- at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. The Sultans re-emerged four decades later under Francis' leadership and drumming expertise. The Sultans were awarded The Best Big Band by the New York Jazz Society in 1980 and received Grammy nominations for two of their six albums. When pop became a viable genre in the 1950s, Francis' services were in demand and he became one of the top studio drummers of the era. His stickwork can be heard accompanying Buddy Holly ("Peggy Sue"), The Four Seasons ("Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man"), The Platters ("Only You," "The Great Pretender," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "My Prayer"), Bobby Darin ("Splish Splash") and Neil Sedaka ("Calendar Girl"). Francis' rhythm-and-blues recordings include "Prisoner of Love" for James Brown, "What a Difference a Day Makes" for Dinah Washington, "Drown in My Own Tears" for Ray Charles, and "Jim Dandy" for Laverne Baker. Francis' autobiography, "David Gets His Drum," was published in 1999. http://www.google.com/search?q=%22panama+francis%22 http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=1PANAMA|FRANCIS # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 14:50:11 EST From: DJJimmyBee@aol.com Subject: Re: (exotica) "Let's Cha-Cha With Puente" In a message dated 11/14/01 8:44:23 PM, mace@ookworld.com writes: << Any other Puente favorites out there? >> Several...when I get to my Latin section and pull them out, I'll list them.
