I am forwarding his email to the list as I know there are several listees who have received and enjoyed his compilations in the past. Also worthy of note are his concert posters which he produces in limited numbers for trading/selling. He spends piles of his own cash on top-notch printing and materials, they are really well-done. The only reason he sells them is to help defray the cost of producing them. I mention this not only in the hopes of drumming up business for Don, but also because his website is full of groovy eye-candy that any exoticat can appreciate for free. There are also track listings for each CD, so it might make interesting reading for the X-mas music enthusiasts of the group. Enjoy! Ron Grandia ========================= SNIP ====================================== Greetings tasteful fan of the atypical musical offering, You are receiving this announcement because you are on the list of interested parties or you have past-patronized homegrown-Xmas compilations from Don Vigeant, Ltd. Of course, your e-address is not shared with anyone of the spammer ilk. As always, you can reply to this email with 'remove' in the subject line and you will never be bothered by me again. Given the heaviness of the world scene at the moment, a little bit of frivolous holiday escapism is in order. I have dug myself down into a $500 hole with all my various productions, but they are labor of love to say the least. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who may be interested. I am always delighted to add people to my mailing list. Wanna skip the forthcoming blah-blah-blah? Then go here: http://www.raygun-equipt.com/cds/index.html XMAS CD UPDATE: Here at Yuletidic-Caucophonic Central, we have been steadily testing, compiling and mapping out not one, but two separate Christmas CDs for this year. They are tentatively called: "BIG RED IS ON THE ROOF: St. Nick-Specific Songs" "AWWWWW- YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE: A Holiday Tune Quirk Compendium" I am extremely delighted with how these are shaping up; the Santa disc itself is nearly a year in the making. Everyone will be prompted just before/after Thanksgiving with official notification and complete track listings. I hope to have these ready to ship by the end of November. It goes without saying what unique Christmas gifts one or both of these would make (or even the Star Wars Surf CD mentioned down below), Each of these separately offered discs are in excess of 30-tracks apiece (80 min) and are liberally sprinkled with Christmas dialogue snatches and hidden surprises. Like always, these will come housed in limited edition, unique artwork. In fact, I am test-driving a new form of gatefold sleeve to use which will eliminate the jewelcase completely (it is a tedious, hand score/fold/cut/glue assembly that looks fabulous when finished). The first release in this format, THE EMPIRE SURFS BACK!(non-Christmas, obviously), using this gatefold sleeve is being assembled and offered now. I am also rereleasing previous Xmas collections with adjusted packaging (available at the end of the month) and possibly some cleaned up audio. 1998 & 1999 will be re-issued in two-sided sleeves, the format of 2000's 2-disc set is still undecided. Each release is always available in a no-frills, econo format at all times at $5 per disc, see the website for pricing details on the artwork version sets. And remember, someone spent countless hours and dollars listening to Christmas music the whole, entire year all so YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO! "THE EMPIRE SURFS BACK! An Indulgent Pairing of The Star Wars Trilogy With Surf Instrumentals" Here is the complete track listing and packaging: http://www.raygun-equipt.com/cds/empirecd.html Originally released in 1999 (all 50 copies gone in a month), this re-release is the 'special edition' of sorts. The basic premise: I took the children's readalong book and record sets from all 3 Star Wars movies (and also 'The Star Wars ABCs') and I interspersed passages of the cornball audio with 24 of my favorite neo-surf garage instrumental songs. All this is sandwiched by the Star Wars theme at the beginning and at the end by a hidden, unlisted track of Meco's annoying 'Ewok Celebration Theme' -the extended rap version! Like the subtitle says, an indulgent pairing! This release received some highbrow notoriety from the Dec/Jan 1999/2000 Star Wars Insider magazine in an article which profiled Star Wars-related music put together by fans. WHY A 'SPECIAL EDITION' -? While I really liked the artwork on the original release, the liner notes came out illegible. This new draft retains most of the same look with some aesthetic tinkering, but expands upon it with an additional panel of art gained from a new gatefold sleeve (and therefore, no clunky jewelcase). These sleeves are a score/cut/fold/glue challenge taking around 10 MINUTES EACH TO ASSEMBLE but I'm sure you'll agree that the finished product is a collectible treasure. On the audio side of things, I have normalized the levels on all the tracks for a better sound and one of the songs has been re-recorded at it's intended speed of 45rpm (whoops!). The unlisted, hidden track at the end is now track #50 with 24 five-second tracks of silence beforehand. Thanks for taking all this in. I'll be back in touch in about a week. Cugat first recorded this in the late 1920's and Dina sang the words to her wonderful version dated late twenties or early thirties. You can pick this up on a cd entitled something like Xavier Cugat with Dina Shore or Cugat the Early Years. We discussed this song a while back on the exotica list and I remember Mo giving a definition of Exotica with a capital E as music trying to capture the feel of a tropical land without using that lands typical customary instruments. More like Hollywood's imagination's version of that far off exotica land. Not indigineous music recorded in that exotic land. (I just butchered Mo's description, but that's the general point) I argued that Cugat's Jungle Drums was the first Exotica song. After hanging out with Kafka and getting exposed to so much music in the last few years I doubt its the first exotica song. Something from the turn of the century is my guess. He was 94, and always swore that it didn't hurt. He swallowed swords, breathed with one lung at a time, exhibited different expressions on each side of his face, ate fire, rotated his stomach muscles in an act called "the cement mixer," survived an electric chair, wrestled snakes and performed excellent magic. Working for a one-ring circus during the Depression, he was 9 of its 14 acts. But it was as the Human Blockhead that Mr. Burkhart achieved carnival glory. Others had driven nails into their noses as part of larger exhibitions of withstanding pain. But he made a five-minute act out of it and added a droll presentation. Robert Ripley of "Ripley's Believe It or Not," a sometime employer, came up with the blockhead name. I use MusicMatch Jukebox myself (http://www.musicmatch.com )(which will rip and compress, no less), although winamp (http://www.winamp.com) may be a smaller download. Or attempt to get a newer version of the windows media player. Microsoft tends to make the media player more and more annoying with each release, so I abandoned it a long time ago in favor of MusicMatch (which has it's annoyances, too, but still very tollerable.) ~Doug =20 - -----Original Message----- From: basic hip [mailto:basichip@home.com] Sent: Monday, November 19, 2001 10:14 AM To: exotica@xmission.com Subject: (exotica) Re: Help! I also remember a controverse string within that discussion about wether "stealing" other folks' music and using it, is exploitation or inspiration. > I argued that Cugat's > Jungle Drums was the first Exotica song. After hanging out with > Kafka and getting exposed to so much music in the last few years I > doubt its the first exotica song. Something from the turn of the > century is my guess. Yeah, definitely. Especially as a "Hawaiian Craze" seems to be the first ever hype in recording history, and that was from the turn of the century up into the 20s. So if this was recorded in the late 20s I may have an earlier example at hand: I downloaded a little film excerpt from an early Marlene Dietrich movie, it should be early 20s, but I'm not sure. It has amazingly wild jungle drums, heavy ritualistic type of pagan exotica jazz, tropical tribal stage deco and hula gogo dancers. The gig goes like this: In comes a gorilla, dancing until he zips his fur open and out steps half-naked Marlene Dietrich with a giant blonde(!) afro style wig... bizarre. Maybe I should make this available in the internet for you all. Giving it a second thought this morning, in the early 20s the sound film perhaps wasn't even invented yet. Marlene looks very young though, as from the time when she didn't yet have her special Marlene Dietrich light. - --Mo ............................ studio ® http://moritzR.de exotica@web.de ............................ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 07:48:49 -0600 From: "Darrell Brogdon" Subject: (exotica) Marlene Dietrich > I downloaded a little film excerpt from an early Marlene Dietrich > movie, it should be early 20s, but I'm not sure. This is the notorious "Hot Voodoo" number from the movie "Blonde Venus" (1932), directed by Josef von Sternberg. Other exotic Dietrich films helmed by von Sternberg are "Morocco" and "Shanghai Express". An A to Z with articles (reprinted linear notes?) by the likes of Irwin Chusid and R.J. Smith. And a couple of sections with color photos of record covers. (Including the recently mention Brazil Now by Les Baxter) The nice thing about books like this is it will make you revisit artists you may have dropped off. And take another look. (Like Tony Hatch) And new people like "The Four King Cousins". And with just a few newer folks like Swing Out Sister and Devo. "Trip-Hop" is described as "a genre based on taking old John Barry singles and playing them at 16 rpm. And the book is interspersed with description of Classic cuts and what CD/LP they are on. Lot better than Music Hound book from a while back. Flipping thru this looked like the Luxuria playbook. Wonder how much the folks at Luxuria used this reference guide. The Lexicon of Lounge, by Dylan Jones Georgie Fame is a British based Piano/Organ player. He became famous in the 60's, I can't remember who he was playing with, on the Soho R'n'B scene. The only record I have of his is a single of 'Yeah, Yeah' from some time in the mid sixties. But I think he had bigger hits at the time, he was certainly a familiar enough name to me at the time. In the seventies he did some duets with Alan Price (of Animals infamy) and had a hit with 'The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde' as I recall. I have this feeling he used to look like Tommy Steel, when I try to imagine either of them I get the same face grinning back at me. I have a feeling I have this book, given to me for my birthday nearly 2 years ago and I think it was discussed briefly then. I think it was edited by someone from one of the UK music magazines (Mojo or such) and that explains the Swing Out Sister inclusions and such, that I thought were a bit bizarre. Like the description of Trip-Hop, though. Georgie Fame is unique. He was one of those singer/songwriters in the 60s= , who were attributed to have a "black" voice. With his band The Blue Fla= mes he was the only white musician to be part of the first Tamla Motown t= our with Stevie Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and th= e Supremes. He didn't like Bonnie & Clyde, but it was his biggest hit. Ot= her hits were Get Away and Yeh-Yeh. As he is the favorite musician of Chr= istian Kellersmann of Universal Jazz, Georgie got a mega-best-of-3 CD-gal= a-box with a book-sized hard-cover-booklet 3 years ago, which can be reco= mmended highly. It's called "The In-Crowd" and presents Georgie Fame as a= strong, warm and sensitive instrumentalist and singer, who plays all sha= des of mod rhythm & blues virtously. This is music for those who apprecia= te "good-ol'" skillful musicianship rather than electronic sound experime= nts... ... and Bonnie & Clyde isn't on it of course!
