Space Bop #169 Radio Fantastica's "The Manneken Pis Experience" This week, we're playing a special on the wilder side of Belgian music, compiled by Johan Dada Vis. Thanks, Johan! Here are his wonderfully detailed notes for the show: 1. signature tune: "Fantastica" 2. Identification sound: "Manneken Pis" 3. Andre Brasseur: "Special 230" o Album "Something Special" o LP, CBS Super Stereo 63081, UK, 1967 | ++++ o info: Contains the hit "Early Bird", which showed Brasseur the path to success and money; his music unfortunately became more commercial, more cheesy, less groovy over the years. 4. El Chicles: "Grand Prix" o album "The Best Of" o LP, Selection Club (bootleg), Belgium?, 1998 | +++ o info: Belgian moody EZ jazzy funk. El Chicles were the backing group of Nico Gomez in the 1960's. "Grand Prix" features great racing car zoundzzzz. 5. Unknown sound imitator + language lesson fragments: "Sam veut acheter une grosse voiture" o home-recording "TV recording + Language record" 6. El Fish & Roland: "Lack Of Time (live - kazoo edit)" o home-recording "Live on Markt Rock, Leuven, 2001" o recorded from radio show "All Areas" o info: Modern blues band meets Belgian blues gooroo Roland. A DJ talked over the original outro of the song, so I borrowed the "Ne m'arretez pas, merde!" soundbit from a radio jingle to create a new outro ;-) 7. Radio Commercial for a Money Bank: "Expo '58" o home-recording "recorded from radio" 8. King Boudewijn: "Expo '58 opening speech (fragment)" o single "Expo '58" o 7" promo single 9. Kamagurka en de Vlaamse Primitieven: "Weg met Boudewijn (Brabansonne edit)" o album "De Pijn Van Het Zijn" o LP, Plurex 338329, Belgium, 1980's o info: Kamagurka is one of the most cynic cartoonists of Belgium, and his music is cynic and absurd. "Weg met Boudewijn" translates as "away with Boudewijn" (ex-king, now very dead) and promotes his wife, Fabiola, as Queen to replace him. The song ends in a wordless version of the "Brabansonne", Belgiums anthem. 10. Vercruusse: "Mobutu ecrit une lettre" o album "Berichten uit het vaderland" o LP, BRT 868.505, Belgium, 1986 11. Golden Music Orchestra: "Tropical Song" o album "Trumpet prayer" o LP, Golden Music GE 2002, Belgium, 1970's | +++ o info: The 3 B's: brass + bongo's + birdcalls... and apecalls too. "Tropical Song" is written by one M. Dumoulin, I wonder if it could be THE Marc Dumoulin of Placebo and Telex fame? * You can hear more by this band in episode 12. 12. Vercruusse: "Mobutu ecrit une lettre (2)" o album "Berichten uit het vaderland" o see above mention of this record for more details. 13. The Cousins: "Kana Kapila" o album "The Best Of" o CD, Ariola Express 4 0071292 953745, Distribution BMG, Belgium, 1993 | ++++ o info: Novelty R&R band, best-known for their jibberish fake African talk on the hit "Kili Watch". Not to be confused with another (American or English) group with the same name, they were also known as The Continental Cousins. 14. Vercruusse: "Mobutu ecrit une lettre (3)" o album "Berichten uit het vaderland" o see above mention of this record for more details. 15. Hans Otten: "Klara signature tune parody" o home-recording "Commissaris O - radio show" o info: Klara is the new name for the Flemish Radio's classical music station. 16. Johan Dada Vis: "Beethoven's Fifth Laugh" o home-recording "none" o info: A quick & dirty mix (inspired by Slim Gaillard of course) I created for a radio game show years ago... and I won ;-) 17. Francois Glorieux: "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Mozart)" o album "Plays The Beatles Volume 1" o CD, Eurovox 1001, Belgium, 1980's | +++ o info: Glorieux plays Beatles tunes in the style of Chopin, Schumann, Gershwin, Mozart, Bach, ravel, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Debussy and Bartok. 18. Opel Radio Commercial: "Blaue Donau motor concerto" o home-recording "Recorded from radio" 19. Torrero Brass: "Bettelstudent Jerk" o album "Opera & Operette Tijuana style" o LP, Grand Gala stereo GG 0 014, Belgium or Netherlands or Germany?, 1960's | ++ o info: Just what the title says. A bit too light at times, but good fun. Not sure at all where this band comes from; the arranger's name, J. Dufourny, sounds Belgian or French, and the LP was also isssued in Germany. No copyright info at all... Couldn't find any info on the WWW either, so, until someone tells me the arranger or band are NOT Belgian, I assume they are ;-) 20. Johnny Dover And His "Happy Sound": "Sweet Carmen" o album "Operagogo" o LP, Krone 14569, Netherlands, end 1960's | +++ o info: Opera tunes "go go" style. The web site of "Jazz in Belgium" says that Dover is "a self-taught jazz musician, born in Brussels in 1929, who started his musical activity at age 15. From 1955 onwards, he plays clarinet and (baritone) sax in various orchestras, among them the Belgian Radio & Television orchestra lead by Francis bay. Beside his jazz activities, Johnny Dover also worked in the variete field where he accompanied singer Caterina Valente during herworld tours together with Stan Getz, Shirley Bassey, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Barry White, Barry Manilow and... Julio Iglesias. Multi-instrumentist, soloist or groups member, composer and arranger, his improvisations on flute, tenor, soprano or barytone are always pleasant to follow no matter whether it is Dixieland, mainstream or modern." No mentioning of his Happy Sound Orchestra, probably too popular for a jazz site. Anyway, Marco of "Weirdomusic" told me that this LP was recorded in producer Tony Dirne's studio in Breda, Netherlands, at the end of the 1960's (See http://home.concepts.nl/~pmouse/opsound.htm). Compared to so many other similar "go go" records of that era, this one is a good one: frivolous and light, but with inspired arrangements, and nothing a respected jazz musician/arranger should be embarrassed of! 21. Temping Agency Radio Commercial: "Whistling exercise" o home-recording "Recorded from radio" 22. El Fish & Geert Waegeman: "Boomse Daisies" o soundtrack "A12" o CD, HKM/ Rana 42771, distributed by Zomba Music, Belgium, 2000 | +++ o info: Uncommon combination of blues band El Fish and electronic musician Geert Waegeman. Soundtrack to a movie about Belgium's ugliest road, the A12 between Antwerp and Brussels. 23. Toots Thielemans: "Dirty Old Man" o album "The Silver Collection" o CD, Polydor 852 086, Germany, 1985 | +++ o info: One of the better Toots comps, with 3 funky tracks and a nice groove in several others. 24. Jan De Smet: "Brabansonne Hawaiiene" o home-recording "Levende Lijven - radio show" o info: Multi-instrumentalist, collector of Ukeleles & accordions, and of novelty & exotica records. The "Brabansonne" is Belgiums anthem, here played on a 70 years old uke, sung in Hawaiian. 25. Raf Coppens: "Keep On Fucking In The Third World" o home-recording "De Zesde Dag - radio show" o info: From a politically uncorrect satirical radio show. 26. Cliff Richard Imitator: "Living Doll" o home-recording "unknown TV show" 27. Luc De Vos: "Rain" o home-recording "French Quiz - radio show" 28. Group of Boy & Girl Scouts: "Rain And Tears" o home-recording "Spike - TV show" o info: A satirical Flemish TV series 29. Mac Freeman: "Abandonado" o album "Hammond Fever" o LP, Eurec EMF 506 stereo, Belgium, 1970's | ++ o info: Mostly cheesy Hammond EZ, but Abandonado (written by one J. Vanhoren) stands out as a classic bossa nova tune... though it resembles another bossa tune, but I can't think of the name. 30. Sandra Kimtergarten: "J'aime La Vie" o home-recording "unknown TV show" o info: Parodie of the only (I think) Belgian song to ever win the Eurovision Song Contest 31. Jos Mommen: "Da Doo Ron Ron" o album "Hit collection" o LP, ADS 419, Belgium, 1970's | + o info: Farmer/Accordion player. A couple of fun & sort-of-groovy covers, lots of schlager crap 32. Eddy Wally: "Baobei (edit)" o album "In 't Chinees" o CD, Telstar TSCD 4990-3, Belgium, 1994 o info: Flemish "schlager" singer #1. He performed in Las Vegas, and in China too. For that occasion, he learned to sing a song phonetically in Chinese, but the audience didn't understand a word. 33. Onzin: "La La La (edit)" o single "La La La" o 7", Monopole, Belgium, 1985 o info: Typical single issued for one of the many carnival festivities. The band's name "Onzin" means NONSENSE. 34. Tone De Plecker: "BRT2 Omroep Brabant signature tune" o home-recording "In 't Lieg Plafond - radio show" o info: This is how the real (almost extinct) Brussels dialect sounds like. 35. Magnificent Mortier: "Sabre Dance" o album "Continental superstar" o LP, CJMO Record RLP 772 stereo, UK, 1977 | +++ o info: Mortier was one of several famous Belgian "fairground organ" manufacturers. This 92-key organ was built in 1923. Musical arrangements by Arthur Prinsen, owner of the organ at the time of this recording. 36. R. Danneels: "In The Year 2525" o album "Cocktail Party N. 5" o LP, RCA Camden 900.072, France, 1969 | + o info: French record, but R. Danneels could be is a Belgian artist. One good tune only: "2525" 37. Johnny Gwendy: "Quando Quando" o album "The 15 years old wonderboy" o LP, A.D.S. 407, Belgium, 1970's | +++ o info: Sometimes, his Hammond sounds a bit like a Moog. Includes a heavy wailing version of "Ebb Tide", better than Al Anthony's. Great covers of Mambo Jambo, Quando Quando, Tico Tico; and also a couple of funny originals: Dancing cats, Happy Synthesizer... Unfortunately, also some very cheesy stuff. * You can hear more by this band in episode 2 & 12. 38. SMS Service Radio Commercial: "Amor! Caramba, una SMS!" o home-recording "Recorded from radio" 39. El Tattoo del Tigre: "Consternacion" o Album "El Tattoo Del Tigre" o CD, Munich Records BMCD 316, ?, 2001 | +++ o info: Mambo from Flanders. There's not much originality to be found on the CD, but they're a great party when playing live. They do no less than 4 Perez Prado covers, all precise imitations of Prado's arrangements; they also do "Bumble Bee", exactly the same way Prado did it on his "Prez" LP. The only difference is the sound quality, which is as brilliant as a recording these days can sound. They also try to imitate Yma Sumac's "Malambo"; it ain't bad, but no voice can match Yma's! Their version of Marcos Valle's "Crickets sing for Ana maria" again doesn't add anything new, so one wonders why they recorded it. It's a good thing they also choose some less obvoious songs, like "Consternacion". On 2 tracks ("Peanut vendor" and "Arrivederci Roma") they do show some arrangement adventure. 40. Vercruusse: "Mobutu ecrit une lettre (4)" o album "Berichten uit het vaderland" o see above mention of this record for more details. 41. Big Band with Louis Fiers at the Organ: "Du bist OK" o album "Gives you something special" o LP, Monopole, Belgium, 1970's | +++ o info: Brass plus Hammond again, and it rocks its nervous jazz rhythms all the way to a big finish! 42. closing tune: "Fantastica" Thanks for reading, and thanks for listening cheryls@primus.ca brian@phyres.lan.mcgill.ca # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 10:22:46 -0600 From: Mimi Mayer Subject: (exotica) Lou Reed does Poe Well, of course. Saver's is a national chain of thrift stores. I guess there's big money in thrift store owning, who'd of known. Anyway, I had a 5 dollar credit at Saver's and I went in yesterday and they actually had some decent records, Les Baxters "Ports Of Pleasure" in Stereo, Anita Kerr/ Rod Mckuen's "Earth", Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan – "Song of the Second Moon" and Quincy Jones' "Gula Matari". The Quincy Jones looked especially interesting even though it was a bit beaten up. I can usually restore minor problems. Anyways, there are 2 rather long and awesome songs on the album. The title track (13 min.) and a tune called Hummin'(8 min.). The album is from 1970 and these 2 songs are remenisant of Basic Hips upload from 2 weeks back, "Music from the Adventurers", but none the less quite unique. If anyone would like to hear these I could probably upload them as mp3s, but be warned they'll be large even at a lower VBR sample rate. I do love that Wichita Lineman though. I've got about 10 versions and I'm always looking for more. I'd like to do an entire CD of just "Lineman"(as us hard-core fans of the song like to call it). Mendes and Brasil '66 do the best version, Sammy Davis Jr. or maybe Mr. Jones do the weirdest version. Actually the weirdest version is the German version that I think you gave me. In any case they're all sweet to me. You passed on Springsteen, but didn't ya know that he's "The Boss". I mean he is still "The Boss" isn't he? I hope noone else became "The Boss" while I wasn't looking. - -Roy > > In a message dated 11/26/01 4:00:24 PM, thinkmatic@att.net writes: > > << I had a 5 dollar credit at Saver's and I went in > yesterday and they actually had some decent records, Les > Baxters "Ports Of Pleasure" in Stereo, Anita Kerr/ Rod > Mckuen's "Earth", Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan – "Song of > the Second Moon" and Quincy Jones' "Gula Matari". >> > > Good finds Roy...actually there's a Savers near me and I finally found a mint > copy of "Tom Jones Live In Las Vegas" and "The Now Sound of The Brass Ring" > on Saturday...Plus their stock rotates pretty frequently. It's my fault. I guess the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. These were recorded at a lower sampling rate of 22KHz, to allow the processing of noise reduction and various other operations to go faster on my outdated computer. So, aside from the variable bitrate encoding last week that a number of people had problems with, the only difference between this week's upload and previously successful ones are the 44KHz vs. 22 KHz. These are mono too, cuz the record is mono. I wonder if there is a way to change Toast to accept 22KHz. Anybody? (Roy :)) Looks like I need to stick with constant bitrate, 128 kbits, 44KHz. I never heard a peep out of anyone then. How bout the rest of you? Problems? No problems? Don't even bother? I'm no techie so your feedback is welcome. Sorry 'bout the trouble - it will get fixed. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "moritzR" To: "exotica mailing list" Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 1:17 PM Subject: Re: (exotica) upload of the week > > Lee is my man, but: I cannot burn these files anymore. :( something is different this time. I found 15 versions on CDR and I'm pretty sure I could find a few more if I went through the records that haven't been "digitized". One of my favorites is by an 80's band called "Naked Prey". The rest are: Gil Trythall Billy Vaughn Al Hirt Peter Appelyard Soul Symphony 101 Strings Mike Leander Peter Nero Ronnie Aldrich Tony Hatch Young Holt Unlimited Brass Menagerie Ray Charles Singers Andy Williams let's do it. You can upsample the files with a program like Peak or Soundedit or export them from Quicktime at the required sampling rate. That will fix it. BTW if you are sampling at 22Khz you are compromising the fidelity a bit. 22Khz means an absolute upper frequency of half that ie 10Khz - well below the levels available to the human ear. Not that it matters too much after mp3ing them at 128Kps. Keep the albums coming though. They are a real weekly treat. Thanks. I've just had a closer look at one of the files and it is actually encoded as an MPEG-2,layer3 file rather than as an MPEG-1,layer 3 file which is the normal mp3 encoding. This may be confusing some peoples playback and /or format conversions. So it's the 44KHz, not the 16 bit? Sorry, if I sound stupid, but I'm not an expert in these things. > You can upsample the files with (a program > like Peak or Soundedit or) export them from Quicktime at the required > sampling rate. That will fix it. I don't see how I can export a file with Quicktime. All I can do with my Quicktime is play files. - --Mo ............................ studio ® http://moritzR.de exotica@web.de ............................ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of exotica-digest V2 #1075 ******************************
