Hello Byron, That's a real cool concept. It might have been sort of a grab-bag. It was five different Command albums but you never knew what five. You're right about there being nothing on the LPs to suggest that they had any connection to the box. Who was/is Olympic? Since you mentioned Hyman. I just got a 1977 Reader's Digest box called Organ Magic ( I believe there was also a J. W. Holmes film around that time by the same name) Anyway, I don't have a working turntable at the moment and there's a song on it by Hyman that I'm not familiar with called "Alfred, the King of Disco". Where is the song from and any guess what Hyman does to it? Roy G. Anybody out there? > > ***** five Exotica list stars > I was lucky enough to pick this up last year without knowing what in hell it was; I'm not so keen on the "B-side" pieces, but the version of "Jumping Jack Flash" is so fabulous, it's worth picking it up for this alone (it's going for only a fiver on vinyl). It was definitely issued in the US and UK, but I don't know about other albums, although I've heard that they were Indian-only releases. Ananda Shankar is definitely NOT the son of Ravi Shankar. How do I know? I also have a six-track 12" 45rpm EP from the mid 70s called "Missing You". The music is meant to be evocative of Shankar's (then) recently deceased father, who was a famous classical Indian dancer (I can't remember his name). This isn't "rocking" music, but instead is gentle and lyrical. And again it's bloody great. Unique, imaginative arrangements: vibey jazz crossed with ragas with a smear of electronics: a superlatively good, moving easy listening experience, which also gets a definite 5-star rating. This is on EMI India and I assume it was an Indian-only release. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:33:18 +0000 From: "Charles Moseley" Subject: (exotica) Ananda Shankar, "Ananda Shankar Anandar and Ravi are cousins # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 10:52:16 -0600 From: Lou Smith Subject: (exotica) Doctor Ammondt At 09:51 PM 2/14/99 +0100, Arjan wrote: > >Any recent news on our Finnish latin professor? A Finnish professor who has recorded two albums of Elvis Presley songs translated into Latin now plans to record some of them in Sumerian, a language that died out about 4,000 years ago. Jukka Ammondt said Friday that the first track he plans to record is ``Blue Suede Shoes.'' In that Sumerians had neither suede nor shoes, per se, the title translates into ``Esir Kus Za-gin,'' literally ``sandals of leather of the color of a blue gem.'' Unlike many rockers who don't care if their singing is comprehensible, Ammondt is concerned about enunciation. ``I'm not sure about my Sumerian, but they say Finnish is well-suited to pronouncing Sumerian because it's such a phonetic language,'' said Ammondt, a literature professor at the University of Jyvaskyla, 160 miles north of Helsinki. Not that there will be anyone around to criticize if he mispronounces a few words. Sumerian, used in the lower Euphrates River valley in what is now Iraq, died out as a spoken language in about 2000 BC. Ammondt's recordings have novelty value, but also reflect the wide interest in languages in Finland, where almost everyone is at least trilingual. National radio even has regular programming in Latin. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 10:52:13 -0600 From: Lou Smith Subject: (exotica) Kline, Bloede, Watson, Jaki Byard, Doug Weston obits *Herbert Kline LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Herbert Kline, a documentary filmmaker who sneaked into Eastern Europe to film the Nazi conquest and later told the story of the Holocaust, died Feb. 5. He was 89. Kline wandered as a youth and wound up in Europe during the turbulent 1930s. During the Spanish Civil War, he teamed up with Hungarian photographer Geza Karpathi to make the 1936 film ``Heart of Spain,'' about a Madrid mother who meets the young soldier she saved with a blood donation. In 1938 he made ``Crisis,'' about the German conquest of Czechoslovakia. It recently was re-released in Europe. To film ``Crisis,'' Kline, who was Jewish, bluffed his way into Czechoslovakia by pretending to be pro-Nazi. He filmed rallies and parades. Nazi storm troopers carried his equipment and follow his directions before the camera. Kline's 1940 film ``Lights Out in Europe'' documented Hitler's invasion of Poland. He also worked with famed author John Steinbeck on a 1941 film about peasant life in Mexico called ``The Forgotten Village.'' After the war, Kline made ``My Father's House,'' a 1947 account of Holocaust victims. He didn't make another film until 1971's Oscar-nominated ``Walls of Fire,'' about Mexican artists Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. He made two other documentaries after that: ``The Challenge of Modern Art'' in 1978, narrated by Orson Welles, and ``Acting ... Lee Strasberg'' in 1979. http://allmovie.com/cg/x.exe?USR=10:16:25|AM&p=avg&sql=B97625 *Victor G. Bloede BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Victor G. Bloede, a former advertising executive whose love for words helped create memorable campaigns for Maxwell House coffee, Conoco Oil and Crest toothpaste, died Wednesday. He was 79. Bloede served as chairman and chief executive of Benton & Bowles Advertising, a large international agency he rebuilt during his 33 years with the company. He joined the ad agency in 1950 as a copywriter, worked his way up to vice president five years later and became president and chief executive by 1968. Three years later he became chairman, a position he held until he retired in 1983. He helped introduce the Maxwell House slogan: ``Good to the last drop'' and the Conoco Oil slogan: ``The hottest brand going.'' He helped Proctor & Gamble with its ``Please don't squeeze the Charmin'' slogan for its toilet tissue and was instrumental in helping the company establish Crest as a leading toothpaste. Benton & Bowles later merged with D'Arcy, Masius to become D'Arcy, Masius, Benton & Bowles. *Irwin C. Watson ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Irwin C. ``Watty'' Watson, a comedian and musician who appeared in nightclubs and on television, stage and cruise ships, died Feb. 1 of a heart attack. He was 70. Watson played at nightclubs around New York City and hotels in the Catskill Mountains. Besides the saxophone, Watson also played trumpet, violin, piano and clarinet. During the 1950s and 60s, he frequently appeared on television and on the stage. He was a comedy star on ``That was the week that was'' with David Frost; a regular on the ``Tonight Show'' with Johnny Carson, and he appeared with Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen, Virginia Graham, Mike Douglas and on other shows. At various times, was the opening act for Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis Jr., Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Paul Anka, Patti LaBelle, the Fifth Dimension, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and Aretha Franklin. The last 15 years he entertained on cruise liners traveling the world. *Jaki Byard NEW YORK (AP) -- Jaki Byard, a pianist, saxophonist and music teacher who recorded with modern-jazz artists Charles Mingus and Rahasaan Roland Kirk, was found shot dead at his Queens home on Thursday. He was 76. Police were investigating the shooting, which went unheard by Byard's family members, said one of his two daughters, Denise Byard-Mitchell. Byard's playing spanned the history of jazz. His improvisations included boogie-woogie and free jazz with zippy stylistic changes. Byard taught for several decades and was instrumental in the re-evaluation of jazz history that began in the late 1970s. Early in his career he was a big player in the Boston jazz scene. In the early 1960s, Byard began recording with Mingus. He played on the classic albums ``Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus'' and ``The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.'' When Duke Ellington became sick just before he died, Byard played piano in the Ellington Orchestra. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/x.exe?p=amg&sql=B61423 http://elvispelvis.com/jakibyard.htm *Doug Weston WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) -- Doug Weston, founder of the nightclub Troubadour that showcased such folk, rock and comedy acts as Joan Baez, Elton John and Lenny Bruce, died Sunday after a short battle with pneumonia. He was 72 and had been hospitalized with pneumonia since Feb. 7. Weston prided himself in the acts and audiences he attracted for more than four decades, from singer Linda Ronstadt to comedians such as the Smothers Brothers and Cheech & Chong. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Troubadour was considered the most consistently important showcase of contemporary folk and folk-rock talent in the country. Appearances there could guarantee major record sales for new and emerging artists. Over the years, the club's acts were consistently impressive: the Byrds, Judy Collins, Bill Cosby, the Committee, Bo Diddley, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens, Gordon Lightfoot, Roger Miller, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Mort Sahl, Kris Kristofferson and Nina Simone. Weston first set up shop in the 1950s in a 65-seat coffeehouse on La Cienega Boulevard. By 1957 he had made enough money to open the 300-seat Troubadour in West Hollywood. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 09:14:58 -0800 From: Jack Subject: (exotica) Denny Moog Player I think I heard from Cleve that it was Paul Beaver on Denny's EX Moog rekkit. I'd never heard of Golson before, and I'd like to know >if the rest of his stuff is any good. I have this, boy is it great! I haven't heard any other Golson albums, if I have they weren't memorable. I will also surmise the following. Tune in, turn on came out in 1967 when Verve was getting into the Mod/Hip scene with albums by Gary McFarland, Wes Montgonmery, Creed Taylor and others who were doing pop jazz or "fake" jazz. This was Golson's only 60's album on Verve, perhaps his only one so I could be led to believe that his other albums were more mainstream "real" jazz. If any one can confirm my suspicions, speak now. I'm pretty sure I have heard some recent (80's) Golson that was very straight ahead. Benny Golson wrote my all-time favorite jazz song called "Along Came Betty" which was recorded by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. He has a lot of recorded work within what this list would probably call "straight-ahead" jazz, but the "good" kind of the Blue Note, Riverside, Prestige ilk--that is, late 50's early 60's stuff when jazz seemed (to me) vibrant. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 00:24:17 From: Jay Schwartz Subject: (exotica) Celebs at their Worst 2 On Fri, 12 Feb 1999 08:29:37 PST, studio@wayno.com wrote: >Overall, "Celebrities At Their Worst Vol. 2" is less satisfying than the first volume... I fully concur with this review, although the bogus Sammy Petrillo track is pretty odd news. There has been a lot of recent attention given to Sammy in the last few years (OK, a few stories in Psychotronic Video mainly), so this seems like a hard mistake to make. I'll add that the "unknown" track 6 on the Friars' Club disc is comedian Jackie Vernon. The reason I know is that I used to have a bootleg 8-track tape of the entire Don Rickles roast, with all of the introductions. I vaguely recall the bootleg 8-track having slightly better audio than the tape used here. It's a hit-or-miss affair, though there's some good stuff, and the Venom track really grows on you! My copy of the 2-CD set cost about $12.99 ($13.99?) at Other Music in NYC. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 01:26:26 EST From: Micheleflp@aol.com Subject: Re: (exotica) Ebay Situation In a message dated 99-02-13 07:47:35 EST, rcb@easynet.co.uk writes: << - pull out of the deal and complain to eBay/post negative feedback, or; - if you really want the item you bid for, give the guy as much praise as he wants and then once you have the item, post what you really think about him... >> That's kind of how I saw it. Dave Pell singers - Ma Na Ma Na - This one's just arrived and so I haven't played it yet. Thanks to those who tipped me off on this one. Don Harper - Homo Electronicus - Unusual Moog record about Man's place at the centre of an electronic world. The Dr Who theme was on the Beat Actione bootleg - top. Electronic Water - Peter Thomas Orchestra - A Moog infused library record on the Golden Ring (suspect) label. Peter Thomas is fantastic on this LP, strange electronics and big beats abound. Pretty cool all round. BBC sporting themes - A top KPM-ish lp by Keith Mansfield, Tony Hatch, Paddy Kingsland etc, featuring 1970s TV themes from Grandstand, Pot Black, World Cup, Athletics, Tennis etc. Most of these were culled from KPM library records and they're mostly pretty cool. On another note, the expensive, rare and supremely collectable Anandar Shankar lp is Anandar Shankar and his music. Its an Indian EMI release and two of its tracks are on the Blue Juice compilation (which is excellent in itself). I was also once offered a 7" single by Anandar Shankar, put out by The Indian Tourist Board, which is also supposed to be good - unfortunately, I missed it though. And finally, I'd like to recommend Craig Moerer and Memory-Lane records as the two best Internet dealers I have come across so far. Cheap shipping, good condition, nice presentation, prompt service and top records. After these albums ya talks yer chances regarding the "ghosting" element and like I said a more typical "easy listening" sound. "Exotic Suite" is worth looking out although this is primarily a Sy Zentnar album with Denny playing (Denny's more subtle exotica is steamrolled by the big Las Vegas-style brassy arrangements of Zentner.) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 08:47:13 -0500 From: Subject: (exotica) m-i-a?
