In fact, I have 2 discs of a 3-disc set of just such a bootleg- the third disc was not to be seen in the thrift where i picked them up. they're just acetates with hand-written labels. He was 85 and never married or had children of his own.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0The nine albums he made with partner Ed Brown largely= disappeared from stores in the 1980s after Brown died and Copp lost interest in recording without him.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0But his compositions, praised for their sophistication and= brainy zaniness in such highbrow publications as the New Yorker and the Atlantic, found a new audience in the 1990s, when they were reissued in compact disc and cassette with the help of a Berkeley fan who never grew too old for the loony tunes.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0The albums are considered classics among children's= recordings, called "deliciously fresh and funny" by the New Yorker in 1958 and "funny . . . uncondescending, and dark" by the Atlantic in 1993.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0"He was an eccentric genius," said Ted Leyhe, the childhood= fan who became Copp's business partner in 1993 and now runs the company that distributes the Copp and Brown recordings. "He is as important a person for children as Dr. Seuss or Walt Disney."=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0From 1958 to 1971, Copp created his "lunatic land," dozens of= stories set to music and peopled with quirky characters. There is, for example, the feeble-minded Mr. Hippity, who believes his chicken pull toy is dying; Agnes Mouthwash, the girl who can't milk a cow because she has yellow jaundice; Miss Goggins, the scariest fourth-grade teacher on Earth who finally gets her due; Jennie Saucepan, the 8-year-old bride who wears her wedding cake on her head; and the perpetually provincial Glup family, who travel the country in a jalopy with their pet cow.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Copp wrote the script for each album, recording them at home= in Los Angeles with a microphone and three Ampex tape recorders. "I didn't know how anyone made records," he said in a 1996 interview. So he invented his own form of multitrack recording, achieving what guitarist Henry Kaiser called "miraculous results with minimal equipment."=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Copp was born in Los Angeles in 1913, the son of a prominent= attorney. Admirers say his literate lyrics merit comparison to the verse of A.A. Milne, Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Brown and Copp created all the voices, and Copp performed the= music, using a motley assortment of instruments, including a piano in the living room, a pump organ in the bathroom, a celesta in a bedroom. He took pains to create the sound effects, building a fire in his shower to capture the crackling, and smashing a barrel of kitchen glasses when he needed the sound of a falling chandelier.=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Once, he overdubbed his voice 90 times to achieve the roar of= a crowd. Using the same technique--"ping-ponging between tape recorders," as the guitarist Kaiser described it--he could create layers of sound, simulating a chorus of fourth-graders, some singing off-key, or a gaggle of barnyard animals entering a room with excited clucks, gobbles and moos. His techniques, Frederick Ramsey Jr. wrote in Saturday Review when the first album, "Jim Copp Tales," was released in 1959, "may have opened up a new medium of expression."=20 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Copp and Brown also handled the marketing. He rounds out this piece of authentic exotica, with a lilting instrumen= tal piece as well. In the middle of the Dennys, we have a terrific new, exotica arrangement of an old, jazz standard, "Close Your Eyes," and, y= es, the its-everything-you've-heard-it-is "Terminal," with the smooth swagg= er of Jimmy Borges...That song should be number ONE everywhere! To descri= be another one of my pick hits on this record, I will quote Sr. Floyd hims= elf: " Polyamor=E9... latiny rhythm and abstract vocals by Lana Warner? flute + moi on what we affectionately call 'craft fair instrument.' it's actually an ocarina, a double globed ceramic thang with me doing my best roland kirk breath and sing at the same time." So, yeah, I'm a Janey-come-lately to this album, but don't you make tha= t fatal mistake! Fondle! p-s...Regarding Jimmy Borges, he reminds me of another fine Asian loung= e singer, Lee Sohn...Anybody know him? He does a LETHAL "Jezebel"! - ---------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity t= o which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. Pat Evans, who humored Kitt with wit and charm on "KARE-11 Today," was not among them. "Miss Eartha came in wearing sunglasses, sat down and didn't speak to anyone." To those unhappy with Kitt's star turn, "I said, 'Honey, this is a 72-year-old woman who worked two shows [at Yvette] last night. She probably didn't have anything to say.' " A master at managing temperamental types, Evans said, "I took Miss Eartha aside. Miss Eartha is just not a morning person! I told people, 'Don't be offended.' She's a DIVA!" Certain people, such as Evans and security guy Dan Seman, have a higher tolerance for divas. Seman's Avalon Limousine Services, of RaCoon Rapids, delivered Kitt to KARE; Dan heard no reports of misbehavior from the driver. "Those are the kind of people I don't mind when they treat me badly," Seman said. "I think she's kind of like Raquel Welch. Raquel can treat me like a dog all day long and I'll still love her. Eartha's got that personality. . . . I grew up watching her on television. She's cool. How old is she? I still think she's sexy." Charleen Bacigalupo, who handled Kitt for Yvette, gave her rave reviews. Then again, Charleen knows what side her bread is buttered on. "I had her in the car all day [Wednesday]; she was being a lamb," said Bacigalupo. She also went antiquing -- they hit the snooty J. Oliver -- with Kitt over the weekend. Bacigalupo said a star "at that level" normally does not condescend to making rounds of local TV and radio shows, but Kitt did. "She's adorable. Interested in everything. This woman is powerful and magical and just irresistible. Her show is a study in power." Bacigalupo didn't really sound like they had become fast friends, given her constant references to "Miss Kitt." "She said to me in the car, Eartha. She's kind of in charge. I expect her to grab the wheel but she doesn't." Of the KARE-11 interview done by Evans and Lauren Glassberg, Bacigalupo said, "You know those young people did the best they could interviewing. Actually, they knew quite a bit." # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 08:41:07 -0400 From: Brian Phillips Subject: RE: (exotica) Re: Katie Lee >I spent a few days with Brian while he spent food-money on records. For fans of the Jean Cocteau "ORPHEUS", all I can say is in its gorgeousness and colour, it's a Brazilian equivalent to the French! It's funny, because when I got the soundtrack , I could just imagine what the film was like, and the music is a beautifully illustrative!
