One one recording Okey has grouped the top dance hits of today, the sounds turned-on psychedelic pop-rock proponents dig most. These are the sounds that rock New York City's fashonable discotheques, London's mod-spots and the Love Generation's favourite playground Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. This recording can transform your own "rock 'n wreck" room into a dazzling mini dance palace. Grooving there to its boss rhythms you and your party playmates can experience the same out-of-sight thrills as swingers in the world's good-time capitals. As zany as the Monkees, as wildly experimental as any San Francisco fluid-sound group, the Okey Pokey Band and Singers will make it happen. This is the second Okey Pokey Band and Singers' record to be released on Arc. The group's first Flower Power highlighting the Love Generation's favourite music is regarded by many as the definitive album produced in that field to date. Friends of Dean Martinez have a very original, relaxed, melancholic and warm guitar based sound, but it ain't no typical Brit instro, and certainly not surf either. They sound a bit more exotic than their previous one ("Shadow of your smile") thanks to some vibes and gentle conga work, and also more varied, with the addition of organ, sax, harmonica and accordion here and there. They sound a bit like Santo & Johnny with a fistful of fuzzy and distorted electric guitars, and a pinch of feedback. Other references that came to my mind while listening where: The Triffids without vocals, Twin Peaks (the dreamy atmosphere), Neil Youngs guitar work on a late warm night in a tiki lounge... grungy lounge? Only 1 track sounded a bit out of place here: the uptempo R&B based "Monte Carlo"; I would have given it a cocktail jazz treatment instead. But a couple of other slightly Latin rhythms fit in percectly! Highly recommended late night "grounge" listening pleasure! _Atardecer_: More EZ grunge instro beauty! Got the idea from reading the article on Frank Turek's (Recliner's) program on the Internet. (http://www.cascobayweekly.com/colum/cong_st_min3_11_99.html) Where it mentioned Frank did 25 versions of the song once. Bravo Frank! So, to paraphrase Dave Barry: "Has the 25 song Autumn Leaves barrier ever been broken?" It?s time to go for a new record! ;') I?m new at this and may not have the stamina, or the rekkids, to even get to 25 versions. But I?m willing to give it a try. I need about 45 versions to fill a whole 3 hour show. If I go that route. Yikes! Gone through my LP's and found about 12 versions, by the time I go through the CD?s (Esquivel, Nat King Cole, Karrin Allison come to mind) I may have another 10. So the Recliner's record may stand. But still have some time to find more versions. Definately have to pick up the Roger Williams Greatest Hits LP. My Mom played that cassette to death when I was a kid. Totally great stuff, and of course the artwork is superior, as usual with Siesta releases. Also got a catalogue from a German label called Trikont. They're all over the map and the brochure is in German, which I don't speak, but I did notice 2 or 3 volumes of versions of "La Paloma", something called "Vietnam Roady Music 2000" as well as something by Isar 12, already spotted on some Bungalow comp. Could anybody fill me in on Trikont? Are the compilations of German material titled Zur Holle Mama--Perlen deutschsprachiger Popmusik worth getting? Live notes: Louis Philippe (who produces most of the Reverie stuff and is a wondrous solo artist) will make his New York debut on a bill with Momus and Kahimi Karie in September. Awesome garage band the Monks are doing their *first ever* US show on November 5 and 7 in New York!!! And reuniting after 32 years in the process!!! As good as Autumn Leaves is, >though, the peak of peaks is their version of "Lush Life", a classic, >drinks down. Hmm. Maybe we have different copies but I have the CD and the vinyl and on both copies, they do "Autumn Serenade", not "Leaves"... unless it's the same song. And anyway, the classic on that record is "My one and only love". (Good enough even to obliterate memories of Sting croaking it out on TV once.) I have two more of those Impulse compilations, with almost thirty tunes between them and unfortunately none of them have leaves in them either. And then there's this reissue of one of his "lost" albums, "And I thought about you". Again, no leaves. (And at this point, we're well over forty tunes with that lovely deep dark voice.) And finally I have this sort of sad, almost exotic record he made in 1972 - "Today" - where he covered "By the time I get to Phoenix", "Games people play", "Betcha by golly wow" (!) and "Help me make it through the night". On that one, the closest he comes to "Autumn Leaves" is "Summer Wind". The record isn't a total failure but you have to wonder if he'd have made it if he had received anything near his proper due as a singer. It's sort of cool to hear his sing "betcha by golly wow". I've read some explanations of why he never made it. I'm sure it had something to do with race although Nat King Cole would seem to put that into question. But for me he was the best crooner ever. Hands down. (Have you seen the infomercial for that classical CD "The Most Relaxing Classical Record in the World... Ever"? I love the way the way the guy pauses before he says "ever".)
