Was he booted off? Money dispute? Artistic issues? Or did Capitol own GNP? Anyone know? Regarding Nat's thread about condition of Henry Mancini records, I've generally had the opposite experience. Virtually all the Mancini records I've found have been in really nice shape, with the notable exception of More Music from Peter Gunn. Missed the first night with Yma Sumac, but caught the clips from Get Yourself a College Girl with Astrud Gilberto & Stan Getz and also Jimmy Smith. Korla Pandit in a Telescription, and a very snazzy travelogue of a Tahitian village sponsored by the Mormons. Next day spotted a sign for a massive garage sale with 7,000 records. High-tailed it over there and for a dollar a pop picked up 50 LPs including: Quiet Village, Exotica, Singapore - Souvenir Songs from Malaya, Rapture - Hawiian Moods by The Outriggers, Let's Dance With The Three Suns, Sea Shanties by The Men of the Robert Shaw Chorale, The Free Design, Skins by Les Baxter, The Guitar from Ipanema by Laurindo Almeida (with two vocals by Irene Kral - a new interest), Si Zentner's The Stripper, Percussion Around the World, the second volume of TV Actoin Jazz on Camden...and much more. Two record collectors lost their warehouse space and were unloading much of their yard sale scores. Sweet! And rare to make such a haul in San Francisco. Scooted home and watched The Brothers Tiki and Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon (with my son). My son's third birthday necessitates the purchase of Playmobil's Pirate Island, complete with Tiki Hut and Palm Trees. Much assemblage, but a gorgeously detailed vision of tropical paradise. Also, an ancillary buy for my son was a compilation of cartoons. First one up is "Wackiki Rabbit" by Chuck Jones, where all the backgrounds are fabulously stylized versions of Tahitian fabrics (very cool). The reason I ask is that I just snagged this Laurie Johnson LP "The Big New Sound Strikes Again - for 50 cents at a going-out-of-business sale - and there's a tune called "The Shake" which is really the Avenger's theme. And all it says of the tune is "a Laurie Johnson original evocative of high drama on the TV or film screen". I am not authoritative at all, but I believe he left Capitol about the same time as many did and was on Reprise for a while before going to GNP. He must have been on somewhat good terms, but not enough to have influenced the selections on the Best of Les Baxter LP. When Capitol did the promotional interview with him (by phone), he was obviously clueless about what went on the LP and perhaps not all that enthusiastic about the cuts they chose. However, at least he did the interview! I have a Baxter related question myself. In the Soundtrack to Master of the World on VeeJay, Cal Carter is billed as the conductor of the 100 Men. That sounds suspiciously like a pseudonym...but of whom? Of Les himself? If so, was this some sort of necessity for contractural problems? The quote comes from the Rolling Stone Album Guide and is their assessment of the Association. The article then goes on to quote Bones Howe describing them as "a terrible band" but apparently he means their instrumental ability, not their vocals which he admits were "very good". Apparently Bones produced their first couple of records but then fired himself when among other things, they refused his recommendation that they record "McArthur's Park" when he brought it to them well before Richard Harris picked up on it. Anyway, silly me, I had to read this article to find out that "soft pop" was this worldwide movement, not just this thing that me, JimmyBee, chuck and Jill were obsessed with on this list for a couple of months. Soft pop has become an official addition to my collecting obsession and the worst part of reading this article is finding out how much there is that I don't have and will probably never see. In any genre I collect, I never want "all of it", just a chunky piece of it. But I didn't realize how much there is. (And also, JimmyB's definition of the stuff includes big choir records - like "The Young Americans" covering the Association - so that makes the genre even wider.) The article identifies "Birthday" as the most essential Association LP. They also refer a couple of times to the Fifth Dimension and especially their LP "The Magic Garden" which I don't believe I've ever seen. They call it "the best psychedelic/R&B/easy listening concept album ever". Luckily or unluckily - depending on how you look at it - you hardly ever find obscure soft pop records here but when you do, they usually haven't been "identified". The other day I got an "Elephant Candy" LP for a dime. Does that qualify as soft pop? It does for me. So I guess I'm looking for that 5th Dimension LP as well as other likely sounding bands like Harmony Grass, Sagittarius, the Sundowners etc Peace # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 00:50:21 -0400 (EDT) From: "David J.
