Collects material beginning in the 60s -- looks like he selected it himself... new introductions to all of the pieces. Haven't had a chance to do more than a bit of skimming, but looks good to me. (For me at least) he *nails* the specialness of punk in just 2 pages in one of the introductions. If you liked "Gulcher" or "Aesthetics Of Rock" you should like this (if you hated them, you probably won't like this). I doubt there is much that is exotica-related, but there is a 40ish-page ramble through his record collection, written in 1998. He's actually out-Ken-Nordined Ken Nordine in my book. (Also *amazing* are his weird Negativland-esque sound-byte collages) The only real historical record of the guy I've found was his primary role in pioneering a progressive radio format called "Love" for ABC Radio in 1968 -- what I've dug up related to "Love" shows just HOW educated, media-savvy, and culturally "with it" he really was. (McLuhan seemed just a notch or two below Jesus to him) He was very much in on the joke with these tracks and knew full well what he was doing. A truly hip total *genius* in my eyes. Since this record was a series of radio spots and not made for retail, it's insanely rare. My copy is really rough. There are at least a couple of other John Rydgren LPs out there, including one called "Worlds of Youth," that has some tracks with this deadpan Laurie Anderson-esque female sidekick voice talent he plays off of. >Go here and enjoy! > >http://www.metro.net/basichip/ss.htm Indeed. The music reminds me the most of (in my limited non-dj worldview) is the 'Vampyros Lesbos' soundtrack, which means buy it, I guess. One of the composer's, Alessandro Alessandroni, is perhaps best known for supplying the whistles in the Morricone's 'Fistful of Dollars' soundtrack, which for me is cool enough reason to buy this set (although no whistling has appeared yet on this collection) I think I need to search out more of this Italian stuff - I really like it. This was my first time in Paris, and I did the following things 1) visited Serge Gainsbourg's grave 2) stopped and looked around and took pictures in a Paris accordian shop (would have loved to have a conversation with the clerks, but I don't speak French) 3) visited several CD and used record stores 4) visited Eurodisney and went through the 'It's a Small World' ride twice because the first time through I wasn't able to get a picture of the dancing hula girls in front of the giant tikis. 5) bought used 45's of Gainsbourg's 'Lemon Incest' and the 'Emmanuelle' soundtrack and lots of other neat CDs (one features a drawing by Robert Crumb of a dancing girl, an accordian player, and a fez wearing guitar player - Crumb is in the band also) Somehow, I never got around to visiting the Louvre or any of the other art museums/galleries. I'd like to find a good way to record live streaming audio to hard disk. I got "Xfileget" which works but drops out a lot. It's like a bad RealAudio player but it records at least in compressed form! I heard this software was pulled for obvious reasons. Anyone know of another alternative or an update? The version I have is 1.0. One way to record streaming audio suggested to me was to patch the output of the sound card with a cable to the card input and record to wav? Haven't tried it but don't know what will get lost in the transfer. I've had bad luck with winamp myself in the past but I think the whole streaming audio issue is suffering from a bandwidth problem at many levels and it's not there yet in any depandable form. This output select option may make me give it a try if it can convert RA format.though! You might be able to hook the out to the in of your card, if you have a card that can play and record at the same time. Not all can. Another thing may be to drop the output to a nice cassette tape or mini-disc. Then sample it back in. Not the best (with cassette), but hey, you're talking real-audio, so it's not like it's perfect sound anyway. I had a couple tapes I made from Real-Audio samples. They were neat. Yes - I like this lp and bought it at Joe's Record Paradise (Joe is the guy who was in communication with that eclectic in MD whose house is stuffed with records and live tapes of 1950s Country performers, btw) for $5. Another decent one is Johnny Coco (I can't recall the name of the lp...live at the Copacabana?). Several tracks are vocals, some jazzy exotica... a fair few are standard Hawaiian, not overly interesting. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Village wins out because of it's historical significance. Black Orchid on CD is a little rare. There is one of those "blended" tunes on the UL 2 CD set. The second part of the track is a "previously unreleased version." There is a single cut of Black Orchid on the Pair "Bachelor In Paradise" CD which is the same cut on the rare "The Very Best of Martin Denny: The Exotic Sounds" Japanese release. The Japanese CD has 28 tracks and is one of the best comps, based on sound quality and composition, that there is. There is representation of most of the different "styles" Denny experimented with. BTW, the Japanese CD has an intro track taken from the Denny In Person album. The announcer says, "Good evening ladies and gentleman and welcome to Duke Kahanamoko's On the Beach at Waikiki. It is now with great pleasure that I present, on Liberty records, the Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny." You can hear the crowd still talking as he starts announcing but they quiet as he goes along then they break into applause. (sorry for spelling on the above) Thru out the record you will here the occasional glass "tinking" and a cough or isolated hand clap. It is quite effective. What a deal! Three CD's, each with about 57 minutes of music, for just about $20. Well, even though I own many other similar U.K. comps, this was a great find. I guess the biggest difference from the others is the large number of Top 40 type tunes covered in this set, but I find those fairly entertaining. (c.f. the two Ultra Lounge "On the Rocks" CD's) A number of these tracks are on other U.K. music comps. Sadly, like most of these U.K. comps, this one has no liner notes to speak of, not even the date of each title. Disc One: 1. Music to Watch Girls By - Tony Hatch 2. Up, Up & Away - The John Schroeder Orchestra [ with some vocals ] 3. On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever) - Roy Budd 4. Soul Coaxing - Sounds Orchestra 5.
