Picked up the LP "John Malo's - Hawaii Starry Blue Pau" This album was recorded live at the Conley Inn, a part of the Best Western = Hotel chain in Pittsburgh, PA. Blue Pau, whose "clean, warm, velvety = voice transfixes you for that one moment of happines" (according to the = liner notes) leads the listener through an incredible night-club act that = strives to display "the talents and efforts of people who believe in their = dream of spreading the Spirit of Aloha throughout this area, starting here = in the city of varied ethnic groups..."Pittsburgh." I doubt they ever made it past Pittsburgh's Best Western but you can't say = they didn't put on one hell of a show. Pictures on the back of the album = (making up for a horribly static white cover with blocky text for the = title) show a stage decked out in bamboo trim and fake flora, fire-eaters, = guys blowing into huge conch shells to summon the gods, and beautiful = maidens decked out in traditional outfits and accompanying lead singer = Blue Pau - looking resplendent in an entire white suite, bushy moustache = and teased-up 70's hair-do. There's plenty of corny crooning as the LP starts out with "Here We Are" = directed at the live audience (yes, recorded LIVE in beautiful downtown = Pittsburgh!!) and stumbles through a weird "Hawaii is a land of varied = cultures" routine that incorporates a Chinese sounding tune, "Sakura" and = even a "polka-cized" Melody of Love (The Hawaiian king evidently visited = Poland and left behind this tune.....) along with audience participation = sing-along to Tiny Bubbles (at one point that jokster Blue Pau starts = slurring his words to imitate a lovable drunk much to the crowds amusement)= . There's a version of Quiet Village complete with bird calls (of which = Blue Pau is an expert - the liner notes say so!). I'm probably making this album sound like more fun than it really is, but = the Quiet Village is fun and just knowing that this is *not* a Saturday = Night Live skit makes it all the more astounding - this really played = night after night for who knows how many months!..... - - Nate # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 11:04:35 -0400 From: "m.ace" Subject: (exotica) RIAA boycott brewing A boycott of the RIAA is brewing: http://boycott-riaa.com/ Then again, I imagine a lot of *us* are already doing it without intending it. m.ace mace@ookworld.com http://ookworld.com http://ookworld.com/linkalog/ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 10:59:37 -0400 From: "Rajnai, Charles, NNAD" Subject: FW: (exotica) Quest for Orgeat Naw...it is made by Jaquins, famous for cheap vodka and nasty rum. The difference here is that Creme de Noyaux is a liqueur, and orgeat is a non-alcoholic syrup, so substituting one for the other is not going to work in a drink. Maybe it's just where I live, but orgeat is extremely easy to find here in the northeastern US. It is available from a number of different companies, and is sold in every well stocked liquor store (it is shelved along with the other non-alcoholic mixers). It is also readily available at specialty and gourmet groceries, especially Italian and French ones. Essentially any almond flavored syrup that specialty coffee shops have is pretty much the same as orgeat. Two of the larger companies that make it are Collins, out of Chicagom and Fee Brothers, out of Rochester NY. I know that Fee Bros sells their products via an 800 # and possible on line as well. Both companies also make other fine products that a well stocked bar should have : heavy pomegranite grenadine syrup, orange bitters, peach bitters, simple syrup. br cleve # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 18:19:08 -0500 From: Matt Marchese Subject: Re: (exotica) Jane Birkin (was Quest for Orgeat) Domenic Ciccone wrote: > >whilst listening to Serge > > Gainsbourg rap "en Francais" over Jane Birkin's orgasmic > > background moaning. > > Just got back from vacation and picked up a couple of things. Well, if by "state store" you mean a liquor emporium run by the Canadian gov't, then buying it will definitely be a problem since even here in Northwestern Wisconsin I'm still a fur piece away from our border with the Great White North. Note to Br. Cleve: where I live, "well-stocked liquor store" means a 7-11 that carries both Miller Genuine Draft *and* plastic squeeze bottles of Old. McGillicudies peppermint schnapps. Jagermeister? Ronnie sends a message saying it has been a zzzz fest lately. I think to myself "well, gee, that really helped." BUT, I did hold my tongue. (maybe I'm a bit sensitive, but when you say that after I posted two fresh articles about the artist who directly or indirectly is the king of the music this list is named after (that would be Exotica king Martin Denny, for those not paying attention), well, gee I guess I can't agree with you. But, in any case I did hold my tongue. Then, Alan Zweig chimed in with a good retort (IMHO) that your message didn't help the zzzz fest did it, and then you had to come back and say "very witty" -- well seems to me that you're coming off awfully sour. Hense my BJ comment. The point was not (as you hypothosize above) that you made a comment which did not concur with mine, but that you repeatedly did so. And, moreover, did not attempt to enliven the discussion with real facts, ideas, or stories - but to basically say you were bored. Well, thanks very much for that information! Will I apologize? Well, if you only recieved 4 emails in as many weeks then perhaps I can understand your original comment -- but obviously you've been missing about 95% of the messages cause it has really been about 25-30 messages a day, just like normal. Then again, your further need to "hold" to your opinion certainly isn't ingraciating yourself to me anyway. (not that I expect others to please me or anything). If you feel that you are nothing like BJ then, sure, sorry for the comment (really). If you felt she was the lowest of the low then certainly you weren't at that level. Sorry. OTOH - if you want me to apologize for (basically) saying "lighten up" then sorry no can do. It's my opinion and I don't think a extreme slam on your character. Finally, I will indeed thank you for at least calling me "The Great Wit" rather than "The Great Twit" -- certainly appreciate you at least pulling that punch a little (honestly). :-) TTYL. - -Kevin Crossman - -- *********************************************************** * Kevin Crossman kevin@kevdo.com * * http://www.kevdo.com - The Narrow Interest Portal * * Lip Balm Anonymous, Ultimate Mai Tai, Exotica Archive * *********************************************************** # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 21:08:28 -0700 From: Kevin Crossman Subject: Re: (exotica) Quest for Orgeat Trader Vic's sells a very fine Orgeat Syrup and (IMHO) the best Mai Tai mix you can buy. What a gentleman, and with a fine sense of humor, I might add. He is very proud to be re-issuing his great classic soundtracks like Mannix and Bullitt. And the new versions ROCK! > The WDR Big Band is outstanding, with BIG KAHUNAS!, and it seems they have a great affinity for Mr. Schifrin and his style of music. These CDs are, as Darrell Brogdon has pointed out, on the Aleph Record label, which is owned and operated by Donna Schifrin, Lalo's wife, and was launched when LS was unable to gain the publishing rights to his work. Many of the smaller record labels he had recorded with have long since been usurped by big business conglomerates, further complicating his efforts.Clint Eastwood, who owns the rights to the "Dirty Harry" soundtracks was the only guy who 'stepped up' to work a deal. > > Any of you "Exoticats" interested in purchasing these should go to www.shifrin.com. Definately get Bullitt and Mannix, but don't overlook Jazz Goes to Hollywood, cause it's got "Down Here on the Ground" from "Cool Hand Luke", the theme to the "Cincinnati Kind", "That Night" from "The Fox", a couple of selections from "Once a Thief", and the most INCREDIBLE version of "The Cat", from the picture "Joy House" that you can imagine. I'm not joking here. The Hammond B3 player, Frank Chastenier, from the WDR Big Band is UNREAL! Wah wah wah! Go! Also, great guest solos by Ernie Watts on tenor, Sandra Booker vocals, and Nils Landgren on Trombone. Mr. Lalo even played some "Mission Impossible" riffs on his piano during the taping. Whoa! Very cool, Lalo. I can't help you with that price but Canadian Tire carries tiki-shaped patio lanterns at the cost of 24 dollars for 10. They're slightly more expensive than the other patio lanterns (11 dollars for 6) so that's why I went with the others. My backyard is quite spectacular at night, with its string of thirty patio lanterns wrapped around the garden and yes, the patio. It's especially cool when I bring out my little portable record player and a few records, especially "Music for a Backyard Barbecue" and the other one which is just "Music for a Barbecue". Sometimes I even bring out the portable windup victrola and we play 78's. Then we smash them onto the patio after we play them and afterwards, I use the shards of brittle shellac to extend the patio a bit further. But that's another story.
