"Gentlemen!! Who came in?" (a tip of the Hatlo hat to Groucho) When I was active on eBay between last fall and last summer I used 3 basic strategies depending on the record. 1. Take it or leave it - Lowball bid and low max on a bargain I could live without - if someone else beat my max I didn't care and I didn't bother to watch too closely, especially if the auction ended while I was at work or commuting. I've found some of my best bargains this way. 2. Gee, that record looks cool - Bid with a reasonable maximum on more desirable records, track it to see if there was much action and adjust the max accordingly. 3. God I need that! - Keep close tabs, snipe at the last minute for stuff I really wanted, but be willing to accept the fact that someone was willing to pay more than I would pay and could beat me by 6 seconds. I bid against recognized list names for a couple category #1 records, but they were willing to pay $10 while my max was $7. Big deal, I got the same record for $9 a month later. A few times I didn't bid against listers with radio shows because I knew more people would hear the music(assuming they won, not a certainty). Not that I'm such a nice guy, but I have a ton of stuff already that I haven't had time to listen to yet, and realized that constantly perusing the "Closing Today" lists was just another phase of the obsessive compulsive behavior that I exhibit when I find something new and cool to collect. I had waited 6 months for a certain category 3 (personal Holy Grail) record to show up on eBay, got sniped by someone at $65, but then found the same record 2 weeks later for $25. (BTW it was Yvette Mimieux reading poetry backed by Ali Akbar Khan, and I haven't listened to it all the way through yet!) Nevertheless, I had to have it - but none of you wanted it, and you didn't want that Jeff Chandler LP either. There will always be some people out there willing to pay almost anything for anything. You may know them, you may not.... if you want a record, pay for it. Turn off the heat, stop eating, sell your soul - is it worth it? You decide. There are millions of eBayers out there and at last count 329 subscribers here. (When's the next census?) I finally burned out on eBay record shopping, so instead I walked into a Goodwill in downtown San Francisco and for a dollar found "Street of Dreams," silky EZ by Leroy Holmes and the MGM strings with gorgeous wordless vocals by Mary Mayo of Moon Gasssss fame. Maybe its just me and my non-competitive nature but I find the whole idea of bidding on records unpleasant. Sure if I see something in a list that looks interesting, and if it has a minimum price or asking price I have no problem making an offer... but the idea of getting into a bidding war... no thank you. I can safely say there are no records I need that badly. I suppose it is conceivable that many people actually enjoy haggling with real estate agents, or car dealers too for that matter. Of course I never buy lottery tickets and haven't the slightest interest in gambling so there may be a pattern here. More of note to most members of the list, however, was my recent trip to Oahu. I was lucky enough to catch live performances of both Arthur Lyman (at his regular Friday lunch gig at the New Otani Hotel) and Don Tiki (at a charity benefit). My first day I had fortuitous circumstance to arrive on the same as a charity benefit at Don Ho's Island Grill, featuring Don Tiki as the "house band". I actually got to see Don Ho leaving the restaurant (Don looked like he had one too many Mai Tais, unfortunately). But, I was able to catch Don Tiki playing some great music, accompanied by Lopaka Colon and Teresa Bright(!). I had a great time chatting with Don Tiki's own Fluid Floyd and Tiki Bob (who also was in town). Floyd gave us Don Tiki fans some great news - but I'll let Floyd give the details when he's good and ready. Tiki Bob, for the list members who haven't met him, is every bit the gracious gentlemen as his notes and posts imply. Being a successful optomitrist, Tiki Bob certainly has a "bedside manner" and literally sweet-talked dozens of people around town during the short time I was able to spend with him. Bob and I were also fortunate to obtain directions to Honolulu's most hidden, and perhaps last true Tiki Bar, La Mariana. I'll be writing up more on this place later, but let's just say that this place is a hidden gem and if you ever have a chance to be on Honolulu this is the place to be. I was a little under the weather, so I didn't sample very many Mai Tais on this trip. But, one of the best ones I did have was at the New Otani Hotel during Arthur Lyman's weekly lunch performace. Lyman was in fine shape and played excellently, as usual. In addition to many of his standards (Quiet Village, Yellow Bird), he also played a fine rendition of Don't Cry for Me Argentina! Lyman always takes requests and the one song I wanted to hear him play was "Love Dance" (he played on Martin Denny's original version, and I actually prefer his version on Taboo Tu). I requested this song when I saw him in October '99 and he declined, claiming he didn't remember the tune. Since then, the Schwaab ad has aired and I think that jogged his memory. He played a good, if out-of-practice version of the song, which I appreciated. A great day of couse, and Lyman was as always extremely gracious (signing my copy of Taboo) and appreciative of fans of his music. Anyway, thanks again to Floyd and Bob... Aloha. I have been trading with many listers, and every trade is still a thrill. It remembers me of when I was a kid at school and we swapped soccer players' cards. It is a treasure to have the chance of getting some rare music from friends. I also don't mind trading some discs that still aren't out of print, because I have such a big want list that I am going to spend big money anyway in the shops and on line, so I am really not feeling guilty of doing un illegitimate thing (and I download from Napster, anyway). Sharing my musical tastes and emotions in the list is great, but the the togetherness I feel while trading with list friends is even a greater gift. So, count me in for trades, James and every one else who'd like to join the trade craze. I have all my records (well, not all: many still have to get catalogued) listed in a big file, with all song titles also. They're filed under genres, so one can easily found what he likes. Also have a file of my wants, but I'm always open to suggestions. I will post a list of my wants later, and if someone's interested in trading some of them with items from my list (I mind you, it's quite a list and it'll take a few minutes to download), I'll be more than happy. I believe he was about 73. I got to watch him perform last summerin Rome, which was fabulous. I also got to visit his home and see and hear a great deal of his music, as well as spending many hours talking about music, movies and Cinnecitta with him. He was a very sweet and talented gentleman and I mourn his loss. br cleve # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 00:38:09 -0000 From: "james brouwer" Subject: (exotica) Tomorrow's "Back-Ward" Playlist, Feb 18 "The Back-Ward" is a show featuring cool soundtracks from the 60's and 70's; exotica; lounge; now-sounds; incredibly-strange; tropicalia; forgotten country and western; obscure garage & psychedelia; funk/70's instro'; moog; early high-brow electronic; industrial and/or post-punk from the late 70's/early 80's.
