From: "Tony" Subject: Re: editing home page Date: 01 Jul 1996 09:43:39 -0600 FTP works fine! Start, Run, ftp ftp.xmission.com FTP will then ask you to login in. This should put you into your "home" directory. Type pwd at the ftp prompt to verify this. What you want to do next is cd public_html to get to your www directory. From there, there is a number of options... ls lists the files in the current directory get filename copies filename to your machine. If you have followed these directions, the file should go right to your desktop. When you're done editing the file, you can use put filename to put the file back into the public_html directory. The next tricky part is changing permissions on the file. I use telnet, which you can start by Start, run, telnet xmission.xmission.com when you've logged in cd public_html And then I use chmod 444 filename Although there may be other, better ways of changing the permissions on the file, but this works for me! Netscape Navigator can not edit files. Well, actually that isn't true. Netscape's Navigator Gold can, but you still need the file on your local computer to do it. However, you can use Netscape as an FTP client. (more about that later in the message) Since using the Windows 95 FTP program is rather archaic, I'll be happy to inform you that your 16-bit Winsock FTP client will work just fine under Windows 95. To access files stored within your Xmission account, simply open an FTP session to ftp.xmission.com. Login as you with your password. You'll then be able to navigate the directory structure of your Xmission account. Simply change your current working directory to public_html to manipulate files related to your WWW pages. As far as using Netscape as an FTP client, simply open Netscape and enter this as the URL you want to display: ftp://drpatty@ftp.xmission.com Netscape will then prompt you for your password. After you enter the password the contents of your login directory will be displayed. You can change the directory to public_html to see your WWW files and you can select one to view it or right-click to save it to your hard disk where you can edit it. Now, when you want to move a file from your hard disk back to your Xmission account, go the File menu in Netscape Navigator and choose File Upload. This only works when you've logged into the FTP server already. Good luck. -Fozz -- Doran L. Looking in the directory I find that there is one file access_log.xxxxxx.gz (where xxxxxx is the date group) This is the file that I have been using. In the past this record has been kept current but lately the creation of this file has been inconsistent. Checking the dir /var/log/OLD there are now some other access log files. Could someone explain what machines they are records for? access_log.2.xxxxxx.gz (This file appears to have been generated daily on a consistent basis) access_log.phttpd.xxxxxx.gz and access_log.sap.xxxxxx.gz The later two files only have a few log files. Barb IMPORTANT NOTICE There is a computer virus that is being sent across the Internet. If you receive an email message with the subject line "Good Times", DO NOT, I REPEAT - DO NOT read this message, DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY!!! Please read the messages below. Some miscreant is sending email under the title "Good Times" nationwide, if you get anything like this, DON'T DOWNLOAD THE FILE!! ! It has a virus that REWRITES your hard drive, obliterating anything on it. WARNING!!!!! INTERNET VIRUS The FCC released a warning last Wednesday concerning a matter of major importance to any regular user of the Internet. Apparently a new computer virus has been engineered by a user of AMERICA ONLINE that is unparalleled in it's destructive capability. Other more well-known viruses such as "Stoned", "Airwolf" and "Michaelangelo" pale in comparison to the prospects of this newest creation by a warped mentality. What makes this virus so terrifying, said the FCC, is the fact that no program needs to be exchanged for a new computer to be infected. It can be spread through the existing email systems of the Internet. Once a computer is infected, one of several things can happen. If the computer contains a hard drive, that will most likely be destoyed. If the program is not stopped, the computer's processor will be placed in an nth- complexity infinite binary loop - which can severly damage the processor if left running that way too long. Avoiding infection is easy once the file has been received simply by NOT READING IT!!! The act of loading the file into the mail server's ASCII buffer causes the "Good Times" mainline program to initialize and execute. The program is highly intelligent - it will send copies of itself to EVERYONE whose EMAIL ADDRESS is contained in a receive-mail file or a sent- mail file, if it can find one. It will then proceed to trash the computer it is running on. The bottom line is: - if you receive a file with the subject line "Good Times", DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT read it! Rest assured that whoever's name was on the "From" line was surely struck by the virus. Warn your friends and local system users of this newest threat to the Internet! It could save them a lot of time and money. --------------69CA42C57062-- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Doran L. To put it bluntly, IT'S A HOAX. There is pretty much no way your computer can be infected by a virus simply by an electronic mail message. Executable attachments to e-mail, perhaps, but then you would have to execute the program yourself to infect your computer. The only "Good Times" about it is the person who started it who has been having a good time rolling on the floor laughing ever since. -Fozz ================================================================================ Doran L. POP clients such as Pegasus, Eudora, and now Netscape Navigator's Mail utility allow you to contact a POP server to download messages to your home computer over your modem or network connection. This often provides the user with a friendlier interface to e-mail than Unix-based e-mail programs. So, POP allows you to read e-mail with programs on your home computer. SMTP provides another valuable e-mail function: sending mail. In fact, SMTP is the protocol used to move mail messages throughout the Internet. But it can also be used to send e-mail from your home computer to the Internet. The reason mail.xmission.com didn't accept your password is because it is not meant to be used as a telnet/terminal host by XMission users- only as a POP/SMTP server. -Fozz ============================================================================= Doran L. John ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill King Subject: new modem, can't get in Date: 30 Jul 1996 15:53:01 -0600 (MDT) I have just installed a new Cleo internal synch-async modem in my primary machine. The vendor tells me it is completely compatable with my old us robotics fax modem, yet when I dial xmission, either with Trumpet Winsock an old version of TelMate, everything seems normal until I get the successful connect message. When I hit enter, which always got me the menu, it just hangs and won't do anything. The modem seems to quit responding. Any ideas? I have called the vendor, but got voice mail. --Bill King ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Tony" Subject: Re: new modem, can't get in Date: 30 Jul 1996 16:20:52 -0600 Probably what they meant by "compatible" is that you set the software to look for a Hayes compatible device, and the software would talk to your modem. What I imagine is happening is the Cleo got set up with the US Robotics initialization string, and it doesn't know how to respond to xmission's negotiation stuff. If you tell Trumpet that it is talking to a Hayes compatible modem, it should work just fine, but you probably won't have the synch-async capabilities. This is a good test for the modem itself, though. What you probably want to do, and this will take some experimentation, call Cleo tech-support and ask them about the initialization string for your particular modem, and have them fax you everything they've got. Then try to put together an initialization string that will go into the Trumpet.INI file. If you tell them that you are using Trumpet with the Cleo, you might luck out and they will have the initialization string already built. Your suggestions plus a little help from cleo support did the trick. My new modem now works more or less as well as the old one. Cleo gave me an initialization string that works. Everything is solved. I'm getting old. This is the second time someone solving a computer-related problem for me has turned out to be the son of someone I knew before he was born. (And in your case, _when_ you were born! :) Fourth time, I guess, since both of _my_ kids have helped me out. That's what I get for ignoring PC's in the days when DEC ruled the non-mainframe world. --Bill King .sig shows an old guy juggling 5 balls in a pattern that every juggler knows is completely bogus.
