Visit the Landmark inn, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. state historic site and museum. It was the first stop on the stage and freight road west to El Paso and Los Angeles (See Wayne Austerman, _Sharps Rifles and Spanish Mules_). One can visit the ford at the crossing on the Medina River, and the remains of the old freight wagon scale are still visible. The Inn has a great giftshop that sells good books and a few period repros. He should have dinner at the Alsatian Restaurant. Castroville was settled by Alsatians in the mid to late 1840s, and settlement continued through the 1860s. Having been in Germany so long, this culture group would be familiar to him. The Alsatians lived (and still live) on Germany's west border with France, in the area known as Alsace-Lorraine. From Castroville he's only about 90 or so miles (a short hop by western standards) to Bracketville to the west. Bracketville has the Alamo Village movie set and Fort Clark, a military post which was established to control Indian and bandit activity on the border. It is also the home of the last of the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts, some of whom were Medal of Honor recipients. Some of their graves are located on the post and their descendants still live in the area on both sides of the border. HBC (aka Double Mountains) *********************************** Henry B. I then looked at Russell's drawing that you listed. More than likely it is very old and made by a local blacksmith. Was the name crudely stamped? Or a machine or tool stamped? If its crude you probably have a good one. There are also other trap buying guides listed in the back of Fur-Fish-Game. You might also find a trap collector who could tell you about it.
