The TOUR!!!!!! is supposed to be in November, but of course it's not confirmed yet, they are working on it though really hard. No limited edition stuff will be available, sony said there no point of releasing it here, since ppl don't know much about him. Press conferences (sony USA is aware about the one that was in UK) will probably NOT take place in the US. There is really no point since the album has been officially announced and presented on the conference in the UK. But the guy may stop by sometime later, I mean there may be a small presentation or something similar. To summarize the whole thing: Jarre WILL get publicity in the US and his stuff WILL be promoted. Kaye (and anyone else interested), I have had yet another chat to our friends at Crown. There will definitely not be a JMJ concert on April 4th 1997. This is because the opening has been delayed to late April-early May. As well as JMJ, the other names being thrown around are Elton John and Billy Joel, so one way or the other it sounds like there will be keyboard players at the opening! Imagine all 3 playing together, rocking Oxygene!!!!!! I know that Crown were definitely in negotiation with JMJ, so it is still possible he will be there. It would be great publicity for him, and would be great live and on video. This new Casino has towers in the outside wall that blast up bursts of flame, so imagine that as a a background to Oxygene 8... Apparently, a full media announcement is expected within the next fortnight on the opening, so stay tuned. In the meantime, does anyone know of JMJ's concert commitments in late April-early May? Finally, it's released here. I got the Limited Edition, and noticed something that no-one else has reported, the reason for the 3D is not to have a spinning world, but a pumping world. If you move the cover side to side, the world pumps like the man's heart to keep him alive. The booklet, starting on the world in space then zooming out until we see it inside the man's chest is effective, but I didn't expect to have all the text crammed onto a single page. After I scanned the equipment list, I noticed the good old TR808, and in the first line of the credits, JMJ thanks Roland. I thought this was a bit odd thanking them for an ancient drum machine, then I realized it wasn't Roland the company, but Roland the person whose surname was on the following line... To the music itself, well, I thought it would be a longer album. Given that CDs can fit more than 70 minutes, I thought I'd be getting 50 minutes plus. I have lots of great techno instrumentals that average 6 or 7 minutes. This album has 3 tracks around 4 minutes, which seems pretty short. It's classic JMJ. It has the bubbling, floating feel of Oxygene, but is interspersed with the the added punchy rhythms of later albums. He builds fantastically dense, active rhythm tracks where sounds meander and swoop across the stereo space, with a pumping barely melodic base line, then a soaring lead instrument (not necessarily melodic) appears over the top. I guess some of the melodies are pretty simple, but the strength is in the mix and the ambience that is created. I still need to listen to it a few more times. Now I'm waiting for the promised remastered versions of his back catalogue, and the one I'd really love, a Magnetic Fields sequel (perhaps a plane journey?) cheers, Erik - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Erik Petersen, Melbourne, Australia (ecp@preston.net) .... .... Hi everyone, Thanks to a phonecall from Dave Freeman, I can pass on some information regarding the position of Oxygene 8 in the UK singles chart. There's something called a "Midweek" chart which is based on sales Monday-Wednesday (infact Sundays as well) so the industry can gauge how well artists are doing, order more copies etc. Jarre is at Number 13 in the UK. Superb considering he hasn't had a top 20 single in 20 years. Midweeks are extrememly important to reordering single stocks, I know this as I used to work for Virgin. I can't really say if sales will improve Thursday to Saturday. I can only see them doing this if the prices are still at £1.99 (CD + 12) and £0.99 (MC). Can people who've been into record shops this weekend give an idea of the current prices? It is very likely to be £3.99 next week, unless Sony continue the 2 for 1 deal. (Meaning it'll be £1.99) LISTEN TO THE RADIO TOMORROW! Capital FM 95.8, and Radio 1 (97-99) for the top 40 countdown!!! Number 1 will be the "Spice Girls" due to Comic Relief if nothing else. If only the single had happened before the album, then the album might have done better. Who knows. Now lets hope the next single gets released during the tour. Monday the 9th of June would be appropriate! Cheers, Colin. Colin Neal http://www.reading.ac.uk/~ssu94048 32, Kerris Way, Lower Earley, Reading. Berkshire. RG6 5UW. ENGLAND. Hi all, Further to Col's message about the midweek UK charts, today on The Chart Show (UK TV - ITV), Oxygene 8 was at #10! Gees, the first time Jarre has hit the top 40 UK singles chart in 20 years... So, I think this will be a very good time to catch radio airplay, and airplay of the video on The Chart Show, MTV, VH-1, TOTP, etc... :-) The Chart Show is repeated late at the night (or you could say early in the morning!) during the week, either Monday or Wednesday (usually). Check local listing for details in your area! As for the discussion of the charts on here - I can see both sides of the coin. But at the end of the day, surely it is better Jean Michel receives media attention? He deserves it! In the UK, the single has been promoted well in stores; card displays, 60" X 40" posters, sleeves next to the top 75 charts, CD's promoted on the counter, etc... It is now the case the single is hard to get! The promotion for this single is good, Chrono 4 never received this kind of attention... Long may it continue for future single releases! I am a Fight Simulator engineer engaged in the synthesis of flight so it is quite appropriate that I should like synthesizer music in general and Jarre's music in particular. Went to our first concert, Europe in concert tour, at Wembley on my 40th birthday. We were both overwhelmed by the power of the music!! Managed to get the 3-D Oxygen 8-13 album before they ran out, our favourite track is Oxy 8. I recently downloaded the Oxgen 8, 20-second video clip from the Jarre website and while playing it using Realtime Videoplayer stuck it in 'loopback' mode. It now plays continuously 20 seconds forward and 20 seconds backwards. The effect is cooooooool!!!. Unfortunately my CD-player won't play backwards so I have been unable to try any other tracks from the album.!! Anyone know of any other tracks that sound good in reverse???????? When you play "Ethnicolor" in reverse, a Dutch phrase can be heard! (So this is especially for all Dutch Jarre fans) The Dutch phrase to be recognised is: "Ik had hem niet geschoten". Yeah... I didn't want to believe it either.. though, I was almost shocked to find out that it WAS true! I recorded several parts in my sampler to reverse it... and after a while... Bingo! I picked up the new album last night at the HMV in the St-Laurent shopping center. It was $21.99 + tax. I've also ordered Oxygene 8 (Part1 & Part2) but have no idea when they might get here. The album I got was the last one (out on the floor) so if you plan on going, it might be a good idea to call ahead to see if they have a copy. I'm listening to the album for the first time as I type this message and I must say that it's quite nice :) Sylvain # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info jarre" in the message. # Postings must go to jarre@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of jarre Digest V7 #14 ************************** To subscribe to jarre Digest, send the command: subscribe jarre-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
