From: Lurline Russell Subject: JSF: Fw: Story from NewsNet.byu.edu Date: 01 Apr 1999 20:53:01 -0700 **** Joseph Stout Family Organization mailing list **** --------- Forwarded message ---------- Message-ID: <01J9IVI80M5S00EA7K@yvax.byu.edu> keith_russell@byu.edu has sent you a story from http://newsnet.byu.edu Here it is: Elder Chujen Chia, Asia Area Authority Seventy for the LDS Church, will speak at a fireside Sunday night about the future of the church and its members in China. The BYU Asian First Ward will hold the fireside at 7 p.m. in the BYU 11th Stake Center at 1915 N. Canyon Road. Alan Cheung, 34, a doctorate student from Hong Kong studying educational leadership, said Elder Chia will clarify a lot of rumors about the status of the church in that part of the world. 'Those interested in knowing about the church in China can ask him questions; he is the best person to ask,' Cheung said. During a visit in December from a church leader in Beijing, Cheung said he learned three branches of the church and two other small groups meet in Mainland China, making more than 300 members there. Mainland Chinese cannot attend meetings in Mainland China, only foreigners can. In the Beijing Branch, members are from all over the world and six or more languages are spoken, Cheung said. In the Asian First Ward, there are 181 adult members, 50 from Mainland China, he said. Several people from Mainland China choose to be baptized. Last year, 10 of 12 people baptized in the ward were Mainland Chinese. Every time someone from China is baptized at BYU, they receive a letter with a 1992 statement by Elder Howard W. Hunter, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at that time, Cheung said. The statement encourages members to fellowship Chinese converts and to give significant opportunities to serve in leadership positions soon after baptism, he said. 'The special attention given to our new Chinese members will increase their capacity to serve and their impact upon the growth and effectiveness of the church in the People's Republic of China when they return,' the statement reads. Cheung said a couple who graduated from law school at BYU returned to China awhile ago after being baptized. 'They could not go to church, but their daughter, who was born in the United States, could go and then teach them at home what she learned,' he said. Chongming Yang, 35, a graduate student from Beijing studying family science, said China's history shows why China holds the position it does on religion. Missionaries of different religions served as spies to help other countries invade China, leaving a strong sentiment against missionaries and a self-protective law that prohibited all foreign missionary endeavors, Yang said. 'Religious activities in China were banned for some years and some people who believed in gods were persecuted,' he said. The open and reform policies since 1978 gradually re-granted people's freedom of religion, Yang said. People who attend the fireside will learn the gospel that brings happiness to people will prevail eventually around the whole world, he said. 'I believe the gospel would bring happiness to people in China and thus should be known and exercised,' Yang said. 'Any progress in this direction makes me feel good.' Raymond Tsao, bishop of the Asian First Ward, said the church is interested in improving relations with China. 'One of every five of Heavenly Father's children is Chinese,' he said. Tsao said BYU plays a significant role in building the relationship with China. 'The church can build relations with China through university education and groups such as the Young Ambassadors,' he said. I drive to this beach, a distance of three or four miles, whenever the world begins to close in on me. She was building a sand castle or something and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea. "Hello," she said. I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child. "I'm building," she said. "I see that. What is it?" I asked, not caring. "Oh, I don't know, I just like the feel of sand." That sounds good, I thought, and slipped off my shoes. A sandpiper glided by. "That's a joy," the child said. "It's a what?" "It's a joy. My mama says sandpipers come to bring us joy." The bird went gliding down the beach. "Good-bye joy," I muttered to myself, "hello pain," and turned to walk on. I was depressed; my life seemed completely out of balance. "What's your name?" She wouldn't give up. "Robert," I answered. "I'm Robert Peterson." "Mine's Wendy... I'm six." "Hi, Wendy." She giggled. "You're funny," she said. In spite of my gloom I laughed too and walked on. Her musical giggle followed me. "Come again, Mr. P," she called. "We'll have another happy day." The days and weeks that followed belong to others: a group of unruly Boy Scouts, PTA meetings, an ailing mother. The sun was shining one morning as I took my hands out of the dishwater. "I need a sandpiper," I said to myself, gathering up my coat. The ever-changing balm of the seashore awaited me. The breeze was chilly, but I strode along, trying to recapture the serenity I needed. I had forgotten the child and was startled when she appeared. "Hello, Mr. P," she said. "Do you want to play?" "What did you have in mind?" I asked, with a twinge of annoyance. "I don't know, you say." "How about charades?" I asked sarcastically. The tinkling laughter burst forth again. "I don't know what that is." "Then let's just walk." Looking at her, I noticed the delicate fairness of her face. "Where do you live?" I asked. "Over there." She pointed toward a row of summer cottages. Strange, I thought, in winter. "Where do you go to school?" "I don't go to school. Mommy says we're on vacation." She chattered little girl talk as we strolled up the beach, but my mind was on other things. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day. Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed. Three weeks later, I rushed to my beach in a state of near panic. I was in no mood to even greet Wendy. I thought I saw her mother on the porch and felt like demanding she keep her child at home. "Look, if you don't mind," I said crossly when Wendy caught up with me, "I'd rather be alone today." She seems unusually pale and out of breath. "Why?" she asked. I turned to her and shouted, "Because my mother died!" and thought, my Goodness, why was I saying this to a little child? "Oh," she said quietly, "then this is a bad day." "Yes," I said, "and yesterday and the day before and-oh, go away!" "Did it hurt? " she inquired. "Did what hurt?" I was exasperated with her, with myself. "When she died?" "Of course it hurt!!!!" I snapped, misunderstanding, wrapped up in myself. I strode off. A month or so after that, when I next went to the beach, she wasn't there. Feeling guilty, ashamed and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up to the cottage after my walk and knocked at the door. A drawn looking young woman with honey-colored hair opened the door. "Hello," I said. "I'm Robert Peterson. I missed your little girl today and wondered where she was." "Oh yes, Mr. Peterson, please come in. Wendy spoke of you so much. I'm afraid I allowed her to bother you. If she was a nuisance, please, accept my apologies." "Not at all-she's a delightful child," I said, suddenly realizing that I meant it. "Where is she?" "Wendy died last week, Mr. Peterson. She had leukemia. Maybe she didn't tell you." Struck dumb, I groped for a chair. My breath caught. "She loved this beach; so when she asked to come, we couldn't say no. She seemed so much better here and had a lot of what she called happy days. But the last few weeks, she declined rapidly..." her voice faltered. "She left something for you ... if only I can find it. Could you wait a moment while I look?" I nodded stupidly, my mind racing for something, anything, to say to this lovely young woman. She handed me a smeared envelope, with MR. P printed in bold, childish letters. Inside was a drawing in bright crayon hues a yellow beach, a blue sea, and a brown bird. Underneath was carefully printed: A SANDPIPER TO BRING YOU JOY. Tears welled up in my eyes, and a heart that had almost forgotten to love opened wide. I took Wendy's mother in my arms. "I'm so sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," I muttered over and over, and we wept together. The precious little picture is framed now and hangs in my study. Six words - one for each year of her life - that speak to me of harmony, courage, undemanding love. A gift from a child with sea-blue eyes and hair the color of sand who taught me the gift of love. NOTE: I hope you have a few Kleenex tissues left in that box. The above is a true story sent out by Robert Peterson. It serves as a reminder to all of us that we need to take time to enjoy living and life and each other. "The price of hating other human beings is loving oneself less." Life is so complicated, the hustle and bustle of everyday traumas, can make us lose focus about what is truly important" Remember to Stop & Smell the Roses ________________________________________________________________ Get secure free e-mail that you don't need Web access to use from Juno, the world's second largest online service. He is the David of the Jonathan and David twins of Kay. She also has twin girls, Lana and Lila just two years younger. David died of a fast acting cancer. He never went to the hospital or took chemo or any treatment other than some alternative treatments, as they said he had only a couple of months or so to live and it was too pervasive. David had just one son, an 18 year old boy. They allowed David to ordain him an elder, go through the Temple with him, and they rushed through a mission call, which he received back in one week. He will be going to New Zealand, and it made his father very happy when he learned of the call. His Bishop or Stake president made the request and the church missionary committee honored it. It was such a comfort to Kay and to his wife. Verda is waiting to get the O.K. from her heart, lung, cancer, leg, and a few other doctors to undergo another operation. She is doing well, and she can actually walk better then Wendell, her husband! Well I am bursting with joy at the announcement of "Rebuilding" the Nauvoo Temple. When President Hinckley made the announcement a gasp went up through the Stake Center where we were. Marie and I almost Jinxed each other in exclaiming that it had to have come from both sides of the veil. What a symbolic gesture of linking us to our ancestors who struggled and sacrificed to build that temple! President Hinckley indicated that it would be an operating temple. I think that will be incredible. I had always imagined that if they ever rebuilt it, it would just be one more of the tourist stops--a perpetual open house, if you will, where we could explain what temples are for--but I am far more excited to know it will be an operational temple. President Hinckley seemed to think that it would not be a very busy temple. I predict that it will be one of the busiest temples for living ordinances. It is the most romantic place to get married! I forsee Nauvoo becomming a center of wedding activity. How many of us have felt a need to get married in Salt Lake just to form a continuity with our ancestors. Now we can go further back for continuity. Why not go where John Lowe Butler and Caroline Farozine Skeen were sealed together? Why not go where the full endowment and sealing ordinances were first perfomed in a temple in this dispensation? Since it is to be a working temple, I cannot imagine that it will be "rebuilt" in the same sense as most of the restored buildings in Nauvoo. The Nauvoo temple had rows of offices that we don't typically have in modern temples. It served as church office building as well as stake center. The Nauvoo temple had two very large meeting rooms, somewhat like the Kirtland temple. All of the endowment ordinances and sealing ordinances were performed up on the third floor or the attic. That design just wouldn't accomidate the numbers a modern temple needs to. I would think that if the Nauvoo temple had remained intact in our possesion it would have certainly been remodeled several times by now. How many times has the St. George temple been remodeled? How many times has Salt Lake, or Logan, or Manti, or any of our other older temples. Nauvoo would be no different. So if we rebuild it, I assume it would be rebuilt to it's modern remodeled state rather than an older state that would not satisfy modern building codes. Will they keep the look and feel? Will they keep the Sunstones, the moonstones, the star stones? Will they keep the Shaker style weather vane horizontal Angel Moroni or will they replace it with the modern upright Angel Moroni? I certainly hope they keep the old Nauvoo styles where ever possible! It needs to fit into the neighborhood! It needs to promote what the restoration of Nauvoo is all about. It needs to look a lot like the original. I hope my daughters will want to be married there! I hope my cousins and relatives might have the opportunity. I hope you will all be forced to consider moving out to the midwest to avoid the frequent travel to wedding parties. ;^) By the way, Have any of you heard the other news comming out of Nauvoo? We bought the Catholic Church's buildings that sit accross the street from from the temple site. The Nuns will be allowed to stay for two years. So now we have an LDS nunnery! ;^) I hear they are going to make it over into a dormatory for visiting BYU students. I suppose it might eventually become housing for temple workers? --David Adams --------- End forwarded message ---------- --------- End forwarded message ---------- ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Her soul arrived up in heaven where she was met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter himself. "Welcome to Heaven," said St. Peter. "Before you get settled in though,it seems we have a problem. You see, strangely enough, we've never once had an executive make it this far and we're not really sure what to do with you." "No problem, just let me in." said the woman. "Well, I'd like to, but I have higher orders. What we're going to do is let you have a day in Hell and a day in Heaven and then you can choose whichever one you want to spend an eternity in." "Actually, I think I've made up my mind. I prefer to stay in heaven", said the woman. "Sorry, we have rules..." And with that St. Peter put the executive in an elevator and it went down-down-down to hell. The doors opened and she found herself stepping out onto the putting green of a beautiful golf course. In the distance was a country club and standing in front of her were all her friends - fellow executives that she had worked with and they were all dressed in evening gowns and cheering for her. They ran up and kissed her on both cheeks and they talked about old times. They played an excellent round of golf and at night went to the country club where she enjoyed an excellent steak and lobster dinner. She met the Devil who was actually a really nice guy (kinda cute) and she had a great time telling jokes and dancing. She was having such a good time that before she knew it, it was time to leave. Everybody shook her hand and waved good-bye as she got on the elevator. The elevator went up-up-up and opened back up at the Pearly Gates and found St. Peter waiting for her. "Now it's time to spend a day in heaven," he said. So she spent the next 24 hours lounging around on clouds and playing the harp and singing. She had a great time and before she knew it her 24 hours were up and St. Peter came and got her. "So, you've spent a day in hell and you've spent a day in heaven. Now you must choose your eternity," he said. The woman paused for a second and then replied, "Well, I never thought I'd say this, I mean, Heaven has been really great and all, but I think I had a better time in Hell." So St. Peter escorted her to the elevator and again she went down-down-down back to Hell. When the doors of the elevator opened she found herself standing in a desolate wasteland covered in garbage and Filth. She saw her friends were dressed in rags and were picking up the garbage and putting it in sacks. The Devil came up to her and put his arm around her. "I don't understand," stammered the woman, "yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and a country club and we ate lobster and we danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland of garbage and all my friends look miserable." The Devil looked at her and smiled. "Yesterday we were recruiting you; today you're staff." But you must REALLY listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response. Just listening. 2) THE GIFT OF AFFECTION... Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends. 3) THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER... Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, "I love to laugh with you." 4) THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE... It can be a simple "Thanks for the help" note or a full sonnet. A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life. 5) THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT... A simple and sincere, "You look great in red," "You did a super job" or "That was a wonderful meal" can make someone's day. 6) THE GIFT OF A FAVOR... Every day, go out of your way to do something kind. 7) THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE... There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others. 8) THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION... The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone, really it's not that hard to say, Hello or Thank You. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Mindy and Ben get married this Thursday. It's hard to believe! I think everything is ready for it. This week is going to be fun and busy. I give 2 finals tomorrow. Dad is in Orlando right now, but will be back tomorrow night. Tuesday gr Lofgreen flies in, Judy drives up with Paula, Tina, Gr and Gr Russell and that evening there is a shower for Mindy. Wednesday Ben's friends are giving him a "bachelor party" to which he's invited Regan and Rand. That night we'll set up the tables and chairs and tablecloths and centerpieces. Thursday morning we have to be at the church at 8 am to open up for the people who are bringing the backdrop decorations. We'll leave for the temple at 11 am and the wedding is at 1 pm. Pictures will be taken at the temple (it's supposed to rain and get cold). Then we have a wedding luncheon at Brick Oven at 3 pm. Then we have to be back at the church at 5 pm to meet the people who are bringing the flowers and the cakes and for pictures there. Afterwards we'll be cleaning up. Mindy and Ben will stay at a Holiday Inn in SLC that night and then fly to Los Angeles Friday. Dad had a free night at Holiday Inn and several free nights at Residence Inn (Marriott) for them in Long Beach. They're going to Magic Mountain and seeing the sights there. I just wish you could both be here for the wedding. We also missed you this past Wednesday. Dad and I decided that we would start a new tradition that gr and gr Lofgreen have done. Each month we're going to have a temple night with our kids and go out to eat after. April 14th Rand, Mindy, Ben, dad and I went to the temple and then to Chili's to eat. It was fun. We'll do it again in May. Today the Jenkins spoke for their mission homecoming. They went on their mission to Russia somewhere. They gave great talks. She talked about communism and the great toll it has taken on the spirits of the people there. But she said you could see in the people who have joined the church how their spirits have come back to life and they are no longer cynical, sad, and distrustful. The other day I was listening to dr. Laura. You know me-- I always like to listen to her. She had a woman call in who said she was raised a Mormon and married to a Mormon (probably in the temple, although she didn't say that). She said that she had lost her testimony of the church and she didn't know what to do because her husband still had a strong testimony and it was causing problems in their marriage. They had little children and she didn't want to get divorced, yet she had some kind of problem believing some of the prophets were really prophets ( I missed some of what she said because of a phone call). Dr. Laura said: "I have many friends that are mormons and so I know something of your teachings and beliefs. Now I want you to imagine that the entire world becomes faithful practicing mormons. Would that make the world a better place to live?" Of course the woman had to say, yes it would. Dr. Laura said, "then what is wrong with that? How could that possibly hurt your children or yourself. There are times in everyone's life when they experience doubts. The important thing is to keep on living as though we believe it and to keep on doing things as though we believe it and then we find that we do believe it and we stay on track. We know that if you act like you love someone and do everything for them as though you do love them, then pretty soon you find yourself loving them. It's the same with your testimony. You do everything--reading the scriptures, obeying the comandments, praying etc.--as though you still believe and soon you find that you do." Her advice reminded me of Alma's great sermon on faith--if we can even HOPE or have the DESIRE to know it's true, that is enough of a seed to start with and then if we do all that we're supposed to do, the confirmations will come and the testimony will grow. I know this is true. Well, I'm going to see that Kerri, Regan and Mindy write to you today. Kerri and Regan just got back from a fireside that Steve Young spoke at, so maybe they'll report to you on that! I love you guys! Love, Mom Family- Not a lot is going on right now. Dance is finally over, so now I can concentrate on ballet more. Anyway I guess it's spring break and Mindy is getting married. That's kind of a bad combination. But love you. Love, Kerri Dear family- school's almost over, only 5 more weeks. I sprained my other ankle playing basketball and it's still swollen after a week. I guess it's because I keep playing basketball on it. Tonite I went to a fireside where Steve Young talked. He talked about taking responsibility. He told some stories about football. One of them was about the playoffs this past year they were playing the Falcons and it was the 49ers ball, late in the game and Steve Young dropped back and one of his receivers was supposed to run in, but instead he ran out and Steve Young threw it and they intercepted it. Because of that interception they lost the game. And then the media were asking him what happened on that play and Steve Young said he made a mistake and messed up. They asked the receiver what happened on that play and the receiver said he was just doing his job. The receiver didn't take responsibility for his mistake. I love you. Regan Dear family--we're very excited and can't wait to see you all! We're thinking lots of cards! Kenny said today he can't wait for Kerri's grandma's to come so he can play games with them! Love, have a safe trip! Marsha ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
