April 11 We arrived Phoenix Memorial Hosp. about 5:00 pm- Did blood work then wnt to the Heart-Cath-cnter- about 6:00 pm. Pinky & Dad got there about 7:00 pm It was almost 8:30 pm before we got into the operating room prep area. Doctor Siegel said Mom needed more fluid- her Creantin(sp) was at 2.1 which was too high, she didn't have enough fluid & her kidneys would have to work too hard to wash out the dye when they did the angiogram. So they gave her 2 bags of fluid. Her count came down to 2.0 -The doctor wants it below this. About middnight it was decided she would go home, drink more & return about 11:00 a.m. thurs. We left the hosp. about 12:45 a.m. They sent her home with the foley catheter so she wouldn't have to worry about going to the bathroom. What the doctor will be doing when he does go in is cut a slit in the femoral artery in her leg insert a tube & do a right & left heart catheritization with selective coronary angioplasty, as well as inject dye to see amount of blockage in right subclavial artery as well at the carotid arteries. He will be looking at the blood vessels that service the heart. If there is a restriction or blockage he will open this up with a stent. He will also try to open the blockage to the artery for her right arm & see the amount of blockage to the arteries in her neck. April 13- About 10:15 a.m. Mom had a stroke. By 11:00 she was taken by ambulance to Mesa Lutheran Hospital E.R. She was admitted into the hospital that evening. Maralise stayed with her that night in the hospital. She was put on the cardiac floor- there was concern she had also had a heart attack. Sat. April 14- Mom was able to eat some. Tired. She can't speak well. Stroke affected speech as well as muscles. Able to respond when Brenda & Jack visited her in the afternoon. About 4:30 she was taken for an MRI. She was very scared by the time she came back. I sang to her for about 20 minutes before she calmed down. Then she was able to eat dinner. Pinky (Pat) & I sang her to sleep that night. Sun. April 15- About 6:00 a.m. Mom drank little cup of orange juice with her pills. The rest of the morning she was too tired to eat or respond to anyone. A barium swallow test ordered to determine if things swallowed went to the stomach & not the lungs. Pinky, Marlise & I sang to her. This helped. In the afternoon Troy, Barry & families to visit her. She respnded well to them. In the evening too tired to eat or talk. Mon. April 16- Early morning had black stool. It was tested to see if any blood in it. She didn't eat or drink much. Too tired. On IV's of sodium chloride for fluid intake & heparin to prevent further blood clots. She was able to respond fairly well verbally to family members, though very tired. Tues. April 17- Mom very tired & not responding much until early afternoon. She did eat a little. The barium swallow test said her swallow reflex is working correctly, though it is delayed. Food does go to stomach rather than lungs. Heart doctor said will start her back on coumadin (anticoagulant). No heart problems associated with the stroke. Possible mild heart attack a week or so before-but tests were inconclusive. Neurologist said MRI indicated that the brain was "peppered" with srokes in the periotal (sp) area. He said these have good chance of recovery. He recommended physical therapy. Dad had the unpleasant task of contacting primary care doctor for certification that Mom is incapacitated & not able to sign for herself when he sold Verdell Apartments. Signing took place at 5:30 p.m. At their home in Mesa. In evening she ate a little dinner. Too tired to eat it all. Wed. April 18- Too tired to eat breakfast. Nurse asked everyone to leave. Said she needs rest. Air mattress with holes in it put under her to prevent bed sores. Neurologist said another MRI should be down before leaving hospital to determine if any changes in the brain. Primary care doctor said Mom had a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) "stroke" on the left side of brain, though not severe. Had milder one on right. He said with physical therapy much of this can be regained because area of brain that was damaged was large enough that other parts can compensate. Right side of the brain also controls speech. This area is small & usually not much improvement happens. She now has aphasia- a partial loss of the power to use language. She knows what she wants to say, but can't make her mouth say it. She can still hear & understand what it said. She does know what has happened to her. Today she is tired. Her throat hurts. She has no saliva due to radiation to her neck a few years ago. With so much sleeping her mouth & thoat are dry & sore. Karen gave her some ice chips. This helped moisten the area so she could swallow. Karen asked Mom if she wanted to stay on earth. Mom nodded, Yes. Karen asked if she wanted to do all the work required to get her strength back. Mom said, No. Karen asked if we could help make it easier for her. Mom indicated, Yes. About 1:00 p.m. today Mom was moved to the 8th floor- room 818. Doctor said she is stable & will move into a care center in a few days. Thanks to all those who have visited her. When she has been awake she has been very appreciative of the family's love & support. For now the best thing we can do for her is let her rest. She will need someone with her all the time to assist her, but visitor's & visits need to be limited. For those who stay with her during the day- no more than 2-3 people in the room. At night 7:00-9:00 p.m. is a good time. Don't expect her to converse with you. Yes or no questions are best. Keep your visits to 5 min. Those with children may want to have them come sing a couple of songs to her-but don't stay long. Later in the care center when she is stronger & a schedule is set- visits can be extended. When visiting stay on her right side. This is now the weak side & needs to be stimulated so the brain doesn't ignore it. The good news is that her sense of humor is still working. Let me know the days & blocks of time you have available to assist her. She will spen several months in a care center after leaving the hospital. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- To unsubscribe from the joseph-stout-family mailing list, send an email to "majordomo@lists.xmission.com" with "unsubscribe joseph-stout-family" as the first and only line in the body of the message. Byron David was named after both of his grandfathers, so it was fitting that he would be inspired to transcribe both of their diaries and have them published. We owe Byron a tremendous debt of grattitude for publishing that wonderful book about David Fisk Stout. Byron will be missed here, but surely is enjoying a tremendous reunion "up there". Both of his grandfathers will be in line to greet and thank him. His parents, two sisters, and one grandson have preceeded him; our loss is their gain. Byron's gall bladder ruptured just over a month ago; he never recoverd from the surgery. He is, at long last, free from the constraints of his crippled body, and finally stands his full height of 6' 4" on TWO good legs instead of one. Heaven is a happier place to be now, just 'cause he is in it. When Mom needed to be moved from the 3rd floor of Mesa Lutheran Hosp. there were family members there to carry her stuff up to the 8th floor. Karen & April were there to tell hospital staff to not move her off the bed, onto a stretcher, and back onto another bed. So movers just rolled her on her bed to the elevator & up to the 8th floor. When in her room they just slid her over, mattress & all, to the new bed. On Thurs. evening, April 19, when it was time to transfer her to Plaza Healthcare family members were again there to carry her stuff & see to it that she was transferred with as little disturbance as possible. Maralise stayed with her all night that night. Twila stayed the next 2 nights. Friday & Saturday she seemed to have her days & nights mixed up, awake at night & sleeping in the day. Sandra & Nan visited her on Friday. That night when she awoke & called for help, she called for Sandra. Saturday evening she was alert. Pinky fed her dinner. When Martha Jane & Bispoh Foote came to visit her, the 1st thing she said was "Where's my husband?" Dad is ward financial clerk. Dale Foote is the bishop. Twila brought Dad over shortly after that. Nan was there also. Mom thought Nan brought him. She said, "Thank you for bringing my husband." Sunday morning about 6:00 a.m. she woke rested & alert. Aunt Lurline, Aunt Ila & Uncle Eli came at 8:00 a.m. to feed her breakfast & visit while Twila went to church. She ate well, then told them to keep "jabbering" while she listened. Laddy came to visit a little after 10:00 a.m. as they were visiting she asked, "When is your father coming?" Not long after Laddy left, Dad came in. Mom was tickled to see him as you can imagine. Shirly, Lamar & AlyceMarie came just before lunch. Shirly & Lamar fed Mom luch. Mom laughed at them when they missed her mouth. The address is: 1475 N. Granite Reef Rd - Scottsdale It's just South of McDowell Rd. Visit her soon. She will be thrilled to see you. E-mail is such a blessing....who would call everyone with that info, or mail them a letter. I can't remember if I've been telling you about Verda. She had a stroke, which affected her right side and speech. For days I could see no recognition or light in her eyes, but spent a couple of hours with her yesterday and she was much improved. Though she couldn't initiate speech (and how she loves to talk!) and didn't answer much to a question, she would nod her head or smile, and even said, "I love you." But that was about it in two hours. She will never be the same Verda. Wendell is on a walker, so he can't do a whole lot except for moral support, and she always asks for "my husband" Maybe Cy and Bryon will meet....and I know mama is always happy to be with her relatives. I am a distant relative. A descendant of Mabel Stout, daughter of Hosea Fisk Stout (brother of David Fisk Stout). I do not have any information about Byron and his family in my records. I only have one relative of his in my file, and that is David Fisk Stout. If you could help me out on this blank part of my family tree, and tell me all the facts about the descendants of David Stout, that would be wonderful. My families e-mail is pdfields@pacbell.net Maybe we can help out eachother with our family histories. Thank you for the nice e-mail, Byron sounds like a really cool guy. I wish I could have known him. I was going thru his e-mails and came across yours. I just wanted to write you a quick note and tell you how much I appreciated your kind words about my dad. He is indeed a "really cool guy" as you said! I'm not really into genealogy (because my dad was, so we left it all to him!) but if you still need some info. I will try to get it for you. You can respond to me at my dad's e-mail address or write me at my home e-mail address which is heatons1@netzero.net Thanks again! Sincerely, Marianne S. Thanks to Richard Stout, we have the same place reserved for us. The Bluffdale, UT Lion's Club and adjoining LDS Ward House. This will be a three-day reunion as it has been in the past. Please come and have a good time with your Stout relatives. If you have not attended for several years, make this the one. As in the past years, we will have a temple day at the Jordan River Temple with a dinner at the Home Town Buffet in Sandy on Thursday, July 12th; a dinner with program on the evening of Friday, July 13th in Bluffdale; and breakfast, workshops with keynote speaker and carnival on Saturday morning, July 14th also in Bluffdale. As an organization, we are just barely making ends meet financially and our funds are dwindling each year. Your donations are appreciated. The newsletters and reunion take most of the funding donated by you. We send out newsletters or post cards three times a year to about 1200 Stout families. Please send what you can afford. Donations from $5 to $25 (or less) will be appreciated. Send to our treasurer, Lyle E Stout at 9730 S. Amber Lane, Sandy, UT 84094-3633. I would like to thank all who has made my time as president an enjoyable experience. My immediate family, cousins, and many Stouters have all chipped in to ease the responsibilities. I have met many wonderful Stout relatives. I have tried to get the younger generation involved in the Stout organization. Younger children have attended the Saturday morning carnival at the reunions and seem to enjoy it. The workshops were added to give everyone attending additional skills and information needed in our homes today. During the next reunion, Allen Richardson, the current vice president, will be the next president. And a new vice president will be nominated and elected. Please give Allen the same support you gave me. Kindest regards, Bonnie Stephens -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- To unsubscribe from the joseph-stout-family mailing list, send an email to "majordomo@lists.xmission.com" with "unsubscribe joseph-stout-family" as the first and only line in the body of the message.
