Incensed with this decision, Bill spent many hours pouring over the UK's copyright laws, some dating back to the 17th Century, in the hope of finding a "liberation loophole", but all to no avail. The JAMs drove over to Stockholm to persuade ABBA's lawyers to relent (this infamous roadtrip was chronicled in the NME and the article is on Mancentral I fink). The 5/10 you're referring to were those found by BIll and Jimmy in a record store several months after they burnt some in a field in Sweden and threw the rest into the North Sea. These 5 were advertised in the Face for ukp1000 each, of which several enquiries were made and 3 sold. One further copy is displayed in the back window of the Ice-Cream van, and as for the rest... They're out there, in the record fairs, 2nd-hand shops and in the hands of collectors and all owners of vinyl who bought a copy at some time. > but what about promo copies or freebies jim and bill would have given to > friends etc? collectors items, I presume, but if you had an original, would you sell? > also what about the several hundred copies that were taken on the trip to > the lighthouse at the top of the world? Jimmy is also wearing a ski mask if that's what it's called. This picture was also featured as a poster/infosheet with Smash Hits. I this the sweater was knitted so the KLF was probably not added by computer, but I think, if it's orange, it may have just been coulourised. The album was on general release, with hundreds, if not a few >thousand, having been sent out before the MCPS and ABBA's lawyers got involved >and the pressed copies had to be withdrawn from sale. In 1987 I was a hard working independent record retailer who was actively selling the "independent" releases the major retailers would not touch. Prior to the album 1987 being withdrawn from sale, the Cartel telesales team phoned round shops like mine informing them that the album was being withdrawn and would they like to place a final order for it, and stock up if they wished. As it had not been a particularly good seller, [I had sold only three from my initial order of five], I foolishly did not fill my garage with copies of it. There must be several thousand copies scattered throughout the UK as I assume everybody was given the opertunity to stock up with as many copies as they wished knowing that it was soon to be withdrawn. Amost immediatly after it was withdrawn it was fetching thirty pounds a copy, due to the press coverage of Abba's action raising interest in the recording and it's value. Oh how I wish I had bought boxes of them when I had the chance. We can all be clever with the benefit of hindsight. I hope this letter answers the current crop of questions regarding it's scarcity. Cheers, John..Techip :-) An afterthought! The pressing plants are required by law to keep records of the quantities of each recording that they manufacture. I do not know the time period that they must keep these figures for, but there must be some means of enquiring as to the exact quantity pressed. Perhaps the MCPS will know the quantities pressed, destroyed and remaining. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info klf" in the message. # Postings must go to klf@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # KLF discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?klf ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 22:55:23 +0400 From: "Mouse Man" Subject: (klf) Music Demo Anyone with a 3DFX card should check out a great music demo at: http://www.3dfxmania.com It called Trip Demo and is well worth a try, sort of ambient/dance, I'm sure there'll be a correct term for it such a 'Slightly Damp Hankerchief House' or something equally implausible. If you check out the n-trance website i think it's http://www.n-trance.com they mention that ricardo joins them on a lot of songs including D.I.S.C.O Stayin' Alive Da ya think I'm Sexy? He does about 2-3 raps on each. N-Trance also like the KLF (source n-trance website) and when I told them about k2 plant hire they e-mailed me back and said are they mad? How's that for a neat way of avoiding tax! I could be wrong of course, it was late at night and I'm never very coherent by bedtime regarding this mail (from Nik again): >This picture was also featured as a poster/infosheet with Smash Hits. I bought Smash Hits (against all better judgment) because it had a big KLF poster, had it on my door for years, took it down, and I have NO idea what happened to it, I've been looking for it, on and off, for a couple of years.
