Not only that but the picture looks more like a thumbnail for a graphics program that makes CD covers that an actual scan. It doesn't look like a scan at all actually, meaning that this guy probably made the things, or at least had some part in it. If you are going to make any decent quantity of CDs, pressing them is still way cheaper, and way way way faster than using CDRs. Of course we have no idea how many copis they made of this thing. I can't imagine many people on this list actually wanting one of these, and we are about as colector oriented as it gets. Why they actually made a theatrical release is beyond me, except maybe as some sort of finale to the TV series. Yes it's worth watching. My additions/corrections, anyway: The Queen And I The Abba sample after the Healey line (and BTW Denis Healey's main governmental role was as the Chancellor of the Exchequer) should have "You can jive" not "You can dance" in, that was blotted out. I'd go along with "Met Good Queen Bess" from the various alternatives. Then later you've got "Feel the beat on the tambourine oh yeah". Later you've got "You can da", that should be followed by "You can ji" not another "You can da". Don't Take Five I agree with Andrew Walker's amendments, though I'm convinced there's a line that goes "When he told me the truth about the bachelor lies" - but "basket of lies" makes much more sense. It's definitely "African tribe", I think there's a backing vocal that's obscuring it and making it sound like "drummer". What's the deal on this video? Is it in black and white or color? This one (which has been floating the net for a while) is bw, so it the version on my copy of Complete Collection. All the other pairs of lines in the "verse" consist of (more or less) rhyming pairs - drum just doesn't fit in. Having said that, the backing vocal doesn't seem to be singing the same word as the lead vocal, unlike the similar juxtaposition of the two a couple of lines later where they both say "fears" together. I'll start with 'The Queen and I', where I think everyone is pretty much in agreement now, apart from the Dennis Healey line. I thought it sounded like 'Healey cut his thrust'. After teetering in 'crust'-land for a while, as in 'cutting a pie crust', I'm veering towards 'thirst' as in 'having a drink at the bar' (thanks Stuey). Try pronouncing 'thirst' with a Clydeside accent, i.e. with a 'i' that sounds almost like 'uuh' and a rolled 'r' and you can see that it fits. Is 'cutting a thirst' a known expression in the British Isles (probably Scotland, if anywhere)? I've heard of 'slating/slaking a thirst', and 'quenching a thirst' but 'cut'? Hmmm. Anyway, here's the latest version, with 'thirst' from Stuart Young, and a couple more Abba sample corrections from Simon Coward. One word is till bothering me. Here I've written 'feel the beat *of* the tambourine'. Simon said 'on' instead of 'of', but I think I hear 'from'. Anybody with a definitive set of ABBA lyrics to confirm this trivial point once and for all? If I've missed anybody in the credits then let me know. Its hard to keep up! I'll summarize 'Don't Take Five' in another mail later today or tomorrow some time. - -Andy The Queen And I - --------------- # Corrected and commented version (3/2000)by: # Andy Walker # Michael Blumenthal # Twilight Isotope # Stuart Young # Simon Coward You can dance We can dance Having the time of your lives See that girl Watch that scene Diggin the dancing queen Every time I saw TV Or I read the newspaper There were all these stories About Stevie and the Raper The Zircon connection (1) And the Peter Wright case (2) The looney left council With their budget in disgrace (3) I asked myself "What am I to believe?" When their cancer is a killer John Player wins the league (4) With masters of the universe And designer death They all keep talking About Princess Di's dress "Yes, it's a very nice dress" When I was younger, I knew just who to hate From the teachers in our classroom To the leaders of our state I'm registered to vote This pleasant land's free (5) So I took the intercity For democracy and me I knocked at the door But they didnae let me in (6) So I kicked it down And I walked right in She was standing at the bar While Healey cut his thirst Question time. You can da You can ji Having the time of her life See that girl Dancing queen God save the Queen. Get pissed. Destroy! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: (1) In 1986 journalist Duncan Campbell's report on the Zircon spy satellite was banned, his house was raided and Special Branch raided the BBC's Scottish offices to seize films and documents connected with the programme. Fits nicely with Peter Wright and was fairly topical at the time. (2) Should definitely be Peter Wright - one time director of the UK secret service MI5, his autobiography (published in 1987) caused a huge stir in the UK because it revealed information covered by the Official Secrets Act. I believe it was banned in the UK, but was available in Australia. Caused a very big hoo-haa ay the time. (3) Certain Labour City Councils, notably Liverpool and the Greater London Council, had very left wing/socialist sympathies, much more so than the central Labour Party itself, and the Thatcher government did everything in their power to crush there credibility (and dissolved the GLC). (4) John Player being a cigarette manufacturer and major sponsor of UK sporting events, including a one-day cricket league if I remember correctly. (5) 'England's green and pleasant land' from William Blake's poem/hymn 'Jerusalem' - which also forms the basis for 'Jerusalem On The Moors' on JAMS 28CD. (6) Usual transcription of Scots is 'didnae' (7) As in the House of Lords. The Lords are renowned for dozing in their seats rather that doing any real political work. (8) Referring to the Queen's corgi dogs. - -- Andrew Walker Kvaerner Oil & Gas a.s. Andrew.Walker@kvaerner.com P.O. Box 222, andy@lysaker.kvaerner.no N-1324 Lysaker, Norway .....
