From: Randy Sommerfeld Subject: M_Boats: Jim Kimmets Upgrades Date: 01 Dec 1996 09:18:30 -0600 (CST) Ripping out the original head was one of the first modifications I did when I purchased my M-17. Did not fully understand the concept of the system and it smelled. I replaced it with the smallest port-potti (12 inches high) I could find, which was small enough to fit in the old head's space. I use scoot guard to keep it in place, I had to cut off the head bolts. I believe the hand held depth finder from Speed Tech has to be held under the water and pointing straight down, before it can work. Which would be quite a stretch from the cock of the M-17. I have a Speed/Temp guage built by Standard Communications Corp, which was sold through West Marine. I have the impeller mounted on the water line, next to the rudder and the display mounted on the inside cabin top, just aft of the mast support. Keeps it out of the rain and sun light and I can see it while sailing. You can program or calibrate this device, which is hard to do unless you have a police radar gun, a good GRS or know someone who has a knot meter that is accurate to sail next to. I really like the knot/speed meter as it helps you squeeze out that last mph from the wind by better sail adjustments. I bought it in San Diego in'94 from the original owner, Jim Koch and trailered it to my home in Port Angeles WA. I haven't sailed it much yet because I have been occupied first with its predecessor, a CT41 ketch, and then with crewing on friends sailboats (to the South Pacific this spring and later to San Francisco from Port Angeles). The CT41 is now sold and I am fitting out the Montgomery for cruising the San Juans (which I can see from my window) and beyond. I have a few ideas about things I think need to be done to the boat and am excited about having a forum in which to discuss those things (kick-up rudder, anchor roller/bowsprit, additional cockpit drains etc). I also plan to subscribe to the owners newsletter you described in your home page. <---- End Forwarded Message ----> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: KinhLuan Nguyenngoc Subject: M_Boats: re newcomer wants M15 ? For sale: 1973 or 1974 M17. Swing keel with worm-gear mechanism (not shoal keel/centerboard like on my 1974 M17). I have seen this boat. It is in EXCEPTIONALLY good condition and clearly indicates pride of ownership. Reupholstered in green canvas. Lots of wood added inside cabin. The inside of the cabin is truly remarkable. Extra port-holes have been added and the inside is finished in brilliant white. The effect is very bright and very attractive. Fiberglass gelcoat (white) and hull paint (gray) good as new. New sails. Well equipped. Outboard. Trailer. One quirky thing: all electrical has been removed and replaced with oil lamps. Asking $5,500. My name is Scott Grometer, and I am the new owner (finally) of a 1991 M15, hull #478. I would like to extend a big thank you to Bert Felton ("Kokopelli", M15 #280) for all of his help in finding my boat, and for a couple of test sails and a myriad of phone calls while I was still "waffling." I looked at a number of boats, and called on quite a few others. Bert notified me about a '91 that had been stored unused since new; the only hitch being that the boat was located in Colorado, and I live in Saratoga, California. I called and was assured by the previous owner (also a M17 owner) that the boat was "perfect," sailed maybe once as a demo at the dealership. I have learned to greatly discount claims of perfection, especially in used boats, but decided to bite the bullet (or swallow the anchor!) and drive to Colorado. This is where the adventure began. Half way across Utah, the pinion bearing in the rear end of my truck decided to explode, resulting in a rather abrupt aborting of my journey. I then rented a U-Haul truck and flatbed trailer to haul the wounded truck home. This U-Haul developed chronic fuel delivery problems, stranding me yet again in the vast expanses of the remote (albeit beautiful) Utah desert. I did eventually make it home, and $2000 later, rebuilt half of my truck. Halving used much of the funds allocated for the purchase of the boat for the needed repairs, it looked like the purchase was off. Enter deficict financing. A very patient Ken Shaw (owner of both the M15 in question, and an M17) agreed to wait for my arrival in late August/Early September. I finally arrived in Colorado to find the boat was indeed near perfect. Between thunder storms, I quickly made boat and trailer ready for the 1500 mile journey home. This was the begining of yet another adventure. After cresting the Rockies, and just after dark, The trailer went into terminal wobble mode. You guessed it! a flat tire. Turns out it was the valve stem. I had brought with me a new spare tire and wheel, as well as two new tires to mount if needed. That should have been the end of the story, but the next morning, still in Colorado, a guy in a huge four wheel drive truck backed into my truck while I was getting a new tire mounted at a tire shop. Ugh! The truck was still driveable, but I was starting to question my commitment to this whole boat thing. Well, they say that bad news comes in 3's. Having made it as far as Middlegate, Nevada, I realized that my camera was back in Austin, Nevada--some 60 miles back! After backtracking in the dark--dodging a million jack rabbits and kangaroo rats-- I arrived in Austin only to find that the camera had been bouncing around in the cockpit sole of the M the entire time. Anyway, boat and human are now safely in California. Too broke to pay even the registration or sales tax, the boat will rest in the garage for a while, but when it is Christened, it will be sailed in the S.F. Bay, the Monterey Bay (when calm!), and next August, In British Columbia Waters (Jervis Inlet, Desolation Sound, etc.) with Bert Felton. I have much to share about trailering, tires (radial and non), etc. if anyone is interested, but I think by rambling on I am already in severe violation of internet protocol!!! I thought all Montgomery owners were pure as the driven snow. Surely, there is no larceny in hearts so pure as yours or mine. Would you believe that I almost did not go look at the boat. If figure at that price it was a dog. In fact, when I told my wife about it her first response was, "You're going to buy it aren't you?" -- and I said "Probably not. I'm not interested in a fixer-upper." Even though I told the seller what he had (other wise I surely would have felt like a pirate), he took my check and then expressed surprise that I had not wanted to haggled over the price. I think he must have planned to go even lower on the price. I was not about to let that beautiful Montgomery 15 get away (at twice the price). To be perfectly honest, I told him I wanted close the deal before he changed his mind -- and wrote the check and tow the boat of my dreams home... Good fortune often smiles on us... They, like Jerry, want to see if you are worthy of their respect. Jerry liked to make sure HIS boats were going to good homes. Obviously, you have proven that you worthy of Montgomery ownership. My experiences were not as severe as yours (thank goodness). I went to pick up my M23 in Madison, WI in early April. The forecast called for a slight chance of rain. As soon as I hooked on the boat it started to sprinkle. By the time we were on the road it turned to snow. By the time we hit the interstate north of town there was 3-4" of greasy snow on the ground. We waited at a rest area for a couple of hours to let the fenderbenders clear up and then headed north. The interstate was not as good as it looked. We were pulling the boat with a half-ton two wheel drive pickup with summer bias-ply tires. We could only do about 25-30mph on the freeway without sliding around (of course the cars were only doing about 35-40). We pulled off the freeway at Wisconsin Dells (my folks live there) to spend the night. This was a change of plans but the snow was six inches deep and still coming. We tried to make to their house but could not make a hill - I had to back down with the truck in the ditch in order to keep the boat on the road. We ended leaving our new investment and love in a farmer's field, wondering what the heck were we doing out here anyway. I'm glad to say we made it home the next day without much trouble. We picked up our new M15 in Utah from Jerry M. in late June 1993. We headed north in western Wyoming and hit a stretch of road construction. That started a series of flat tires (4 times to the tire garage) which was costly both timewise and moneywise. The 12 inch bias plies that came with the M15 were junk with about 600 miles on them. (We later changed to 13" car radials and love them). We finally got to Jackson Lake, Wyo. and launced her at Colter Bay with the Grand Teton Range reflecting in the water all around us. As it was late in the day (lost a planned day of sailing due to the tires), we rented a mooring. But we had s short test sail around the Bay first. The next morning it started to rain - or so I thought. My wife looked out the port window and said it was snowing. I said "No, it can't be." It was. The winds were blowing upwards of 40 mph and the temperature was in the same category. We went for a hike and saw a cow and calf moose but postponed our sail another day. Then next morning started off beautifully and we had a chance to get a feel for the boat before the clouds came over the range and the winds started howling (but that's another story). We made it home on an old spare tire that I brought along - "just in case." I was tempted to name the M23 "Snowgoose" after our run home. The M15 was named before we bought her or she may have had that handle. I can say I feel like you did - that the fates were really testing me on buying the M's. I must say in retrospect that they have been a couple of the best decisions I made in my life. I hope that you come to share that sentiment. Randy P. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: rc2222@pacbell.net Subject: M_Boats: Chuck and Jerry Date: 09 Dec 1996 08:35:00 -0800 I sent a Christmas card to Jerry Montgomery and signed it Chuck McCoy. On the reverse side I wrote "just kidding" and signed my name. Jerry called to say the joke worked. He said he hopes to get a modem for Christmas and is thinking of joining us on the net. I'm still waiting for my new M15. Randy: This information is from what Chuck and Jerry have told me on different occassions: In May, Chuck picked up the molds for the 15 & 17. My best guess is they're in the Seattle area. Chuck sent me pictures of my new 15 in August (two stripes of dark blue and colonial white). Jerry still has the molds for the 23 and his other smaller boats in the Sacramento area. Jerry's address is the same as indicated in the Montgomery Newsletter. The only legitimate reason for the delays is that Chuck has had to re-design all the rigging himself, since he never purchased any from Jerry nor is he using any of the old suppliers. In fact, he left another message late last night that he's planning on leaving for San Francisco next week with my boat- I've heard this several times before. Last week I left him a message that I'm going to the F.B.I. My twelve year old son thinks I'm really stupid. My wife can only think of all the different vacations we could have taken with the deposit Chuck McCoy has. I wish I only played golf!! I'm 43 and live in Northern California. I have done most of my sailing on San Francisco Bay in boats around 32 ft. I have been an admirer of Lyle Hess' designs and hope some day to own a Bristol Channel Cutter. I do not own a boat now but am waiting and waiting and waiting for my new M17 that was to be delivered in Oct. When I talked to Chuck McCoy prior to ordering the boat I specified some changes that I wanted, specifically two round ports per side inplace of the standard window. He said that he had decided to do this already and so there would be no problem. The problem seems to be getting the boat. Also a problem is contacting Chuck to see whats going on. Calls to the number in the ad in Sailing magazine are unanweredand now the message states his mailbox is full. I am getting a little nervous. Would appreciate any info anyone has regarding Annapolis Launch and Dinghy. I wrote the owner and received a nice letter from him describing the accident caused by severe winds while the boat was secured to a dock which was blown away. He and his wife are both in their 70's and have trailered the boat to SFO and to the Chesapeake from home in Minnesota. It seems they love to travel but are homebound due to vicic commitments. The boat is in a repair yard to fix the damage. He has a roller furling on the headstay, but said little about the other modifications on the boat. Bob M15 #208 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Rod and Elsa Johnson Subject: M_Boats: New guy on the list Date: 17 Dec 1996 21:23:20 -0800 Hello everyone - I have owned Busca Brisas, M17 #408, for a couple years now - bought it from the original owner, Jim Koch in San Diego (for $6500). It was (and still is) in excellent condition having been little used, but Jim cleaned and waxed it to perfection before I picked it up. I already knew it was special but that emphasized the point. So far I haven't sailed it a whole lot because I was busy working on another boat (since sold), then did some sailing as crew on other boats. Now I am looking forward to cruising the Montgomery. My plans are to explore the San Juans and north to Desolation Sound and maybe beyond this year. I live in Port Angeles WA and look from my kitchen window across the Strait of Juan de Fuca at the San Juans, I sailed there and thru the Inside Passage to Alaska in my last boat (a CT41 ketch) last year, and the bug has really bit me to go again in the Montgomery. I have a few mods in mind and I would appreciate any comments or info about them. First is a way to keep an anchor ready on the bow. I am building a little bowsprit with a roller for an 11# Bruce but can't decide how or where to keep the chain and rode. Second is a kick-up rudder (following a bad experience with a submerged log). Has anyone built one? Does the new Montgomery builder have them? Third is a system to improve reefing the main. I think I need to convert from a bolt rope to slides and maybe add lazy-jacks (I have already added a topping lift). I plan to talk to a sail maker about that but would appreciate any comments. Most of my sailing will be single handing and that makes some of these things a little more critical I think. Meanwhile I am sailing the boat as is and I'm having a ball. What a jewel! Rich Cottrell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Stanley Townsend Subject: M_Boats: Moved to Potter Valley Date: 18 Dec 1996 14:51:10 -0800 Well, I have moved my M15 (Freya) from under the redwoods of the hills above Comptche to under the oaks of the hills above Potter Valley... this in Mendocino County, Northern California. My wife and I are living in a 33' 5th wheel trailer until our house is built... starting this Spring. Living in Comptche the last two years was great. A fantastic climate, with cool WET Winters and warm (delicious) Summers... not to mention the Fall, with the forest full of mushrooms! I will miss it. But living in Comptche meant I was far enough from sailing spots that I was that much less likely to go. And go I didn't. Last summer I did the Montgomery group outing to SF Bay in June, I sailed into the blue Pacific once out of Noyo Harbor, I sailed Clear Lake out of Konocti Harbor once, and I sailed Lake Mendocino once (with my daughter and grandaughter Freya... my boat's namesake!). That was the extent of my sailing. Pretty pathetic. Our Potter Valley property is about 5 minutes from the launch ramp at Lake Mendocino... I get a panoramic drive-by view of the Lake on my way to work each day. We are about a half hour from Clear Lake. So I'm looking forward to much more sailing next summer. I would really like to do SF Bay again at least once. We have a friend living on a boat at Sausalito, so that will probably be our starting point. I also want to sail Tomales Bay, and maybe the Delta. I will be watching this group as plans for a Catalina outing firm up. It would be amazing if I could actually work that in, but I'm definately interested. Thanks to the group for providing my sailing "fix" vicariously while I have been relatively idle. As I get (back) into sailing Freya, I'll contribute some experiences. -- townsend@pacific.net (Stanley Townsend - M15 "Freya") ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: luan Subject: M_Boats: Season's Greetings!
