Is the 2X4 against the aft end of the keel? Does the rope slide around the end of the 2X4 as it is winched in to the trailer winch? How long is the 2X4? How do you get the 2X4 and rope in place? Rich-"Really" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Joe Kidd Subject: Re: M_Boats: New M15 Owner Date: 01 Apr 1997 16:03:44 -0800 Tom, Welcome aboard. I'm sure you'll be please with your M-15. She's a "yar" vessel. To conserve energy (and my older and less energetic body) I let inertia move "Poco A Poco" forward on the trailer. It is much simpler to just get her on the trailer as far as possible, snub up the winch line until it hums like a fiddle string, and pull the whole shebang up to level ground. Then, I make a series of sudden straight-line stops. The boat slides forward until it is firm against the winch post. This technique has been used on my fishing boats and sailboats for years and hasn't caused any trouble yet. In fact, you will probably notice that after you have driven a few miles, all the hold-down straps and lines tend to become less taut and need to be re-tightened. Somehow, the boat generally finds its own most secure and comfortable position on the trailer. Any effort to pick up your Montgomery 15 would have been worth it at twice the mileage... Yes, there is definitely a bias among us. Montgomery owners can truthfully say, "They don't make them like that any more." The weather is nice here in the Sierra Nevadas of California and I plan to get "Poco A Poco," my M-15 #207, out of the garage tomorrow and do some rigging... Gotta see how the new mainsail slugs work and also plan to install a new boom vang. I'm still working on the compass location. Although I have three really nice compasses, nothing seems quit right. Thanks to those of you who answered my question about an Arizona dealer I found this boat in Tucson, flew from northern CA to see it, bought it, and arranged to have it shipped to Sacramento. There the trailer was inspected and found only to need new tires. Now although I'm intensely interested in car tires, and have followed with interest the tire debate on this list, I let the trailer people put on the tires they thought were best. Then I drove from Chico to Sacramento, hitched up the boat and without any prior towing experiance, but with much anxiety because of the high wind warnings, I successfully got the boat to my house. Today I put up the mast without too much difficulty and my son learned only a few new words. I ran up the main sail, again without much drama, and now my question. How do I rig up the out haul? Except for the bracket that the topping lift attaches to, there is no hardware near the end of the boom. I tied off the out haul line to this bracket but it seems a bit sloppy. I'd cut out the white sealant to see if the pin has slid out the other side. If it has then you need to drive the pin back in. If not, it sounds like a home fix with too long of a pin. Maybe you can remove the pin and saw it off to a length just short of the width of the keel. Date: 09 Apr 1997 08:06:34 -0700 Doug: Your center board pivot pin should be well inside the keel. Good advice to try driving it back and sealing, or cut off the pin. The pin should be approximately flush on both sides. When I bought my M-15, the pin was protruding about 3/4" on one side. Subsequently, I found that my centerboard was stuck (due to a pinched line as I learned from Bob Becker on this list). I eventually ended up jacking my boat up off the trailer, driving the pin all the way out (using a smaller diameter drift pin/punch), dropping the centerboard and remedying the jammed line. The pin itself is about 5-6" long (the width of the centerboard trunk), so unless you have a poorly fitted replacement pin as mentioned by Randy, I'd say your pin is about to come out. When I put everything back together, I just put a light covering of epoxy over the ends of the pin. I figured that if I ever need to repeat the centerboard dropping procedure, I could just chisel/grind off the epoxy to expose the pin and that a thin film of epoxy should be sufficient to keep the pin from working out one side or the other. Still, I periodically check the integrity of the epoxy and/or the location of the pin when I launch or when I return home. From the M-15s I've seen besides mine, it appears that, without some form of epoxy retainer, the pin is prone to drift. Yours sounds like the worst case yet though. Give it a few taps with a stout hammer and see if you can drive it in so that both ends are flush (my pin moved quite easily when hit with a small hand sledge). It sticks out maybe 1/8th inch or so. That seems to be just enough friction to keep it from popping up. When you pull it up an inch or so then the board floats free. I would imagine having one stick out on both sides would work fine. I'd check the clearance of the board and the slot and make it just enough longer so you get a snug fit. As you progress through your boat building plans you might look at a boat called the Meadow Bird. This design is very similar to the M15. Its a 16ft sloop with a 600lb keel centerboard which sails in 18" of water. It may be a bit difficult for a first time builder but the results would be a classy boat. I was tempted to build one when I was looking for a boat. Good Luck, Doug ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Andrew J. It is certainly true that I'd rather be out sailing than in a garage playing carpenter. On the other hand, you can't do much sailing in South Dakota during the winter months and I do think the boat project will be a good escape or release from the school work ( I am going back to college next fall). One thing's for sure, if next spring comes and she is not ready, I'll be very frustrated. I realize that is a real possibility. My brother decided to build a boat when he went back to college. He thought it would be a winter project and it took three years. He is married with two kids and I am single so hopefully I'll be able to devote more time to the project. He had seen one of my postings about Montgomery Sailboats on a sailing network and wanted to talk with me. He told me he lives in Southern California, knows Jerry Montgomery, and intends to become part of our Montgomery Owners' Net soon. He knew all about the problems with the on-again/off-again Montgomery production. We had a nice chat. After all the enthusiasm... disappointment... frustration... anger... with Annapolis Launch And Dinghy, I thought this little bit of news (rumor?) might be of interest to some of you. I've had a wonderful two days off to work on my M-15. I scrubbed and polished her hull and topsides, cleaned, sanded and oiled all of the teak (Watco Marine Teakwood Finish), installed a new T-slot vang fitting to the boom (from a Lazer), and worked out an experimental topping lift arrangment on the end of the boom. Date: 21 Apr 1997 00:03:20 -0700 Harvey, Tomorrow it will be 71 days... My retirement is effective July 1 (I'll be 62 the middle of July). After 39 years for/with the same boss (I've been a United Methodist Minister since 1958) -- plus a couple of really painful thumpers in the cardiac category -- I figured it was time to take some pressure off the actuarial tables. The house, cars, boats and other toys are paid for, but I haven't had much time to enjoy them (I usually get only one day off a week, but until this past week-end had not had a day off since before Easter.) I decided to take the suggestions of two wise parents (Mother Nature & Father Time) and give it a rest. As to that Evinrude, sounds like the waterpump impeller is stuck, or you have a clogged water passage -- possibly from running in shallow water and sucking up mud, rust build-up in the cooling passages, or some little critters decided to build mud nests in the plumbing (that last one happened to me once). Whatever it costs to fix it, it won't cost as expensive as a new motor. Smooth sailing in Atlanta... Montgomery made some great sailboats. I have a M17 (hull # 372) and I live in South Carolina. I sail mostly on Clark Hill Reservoir (Savannah River above Augusta GA). If you are planning to travel down this way let me know. If you want to sail up on the reservoir, I can arrange for you to have a slip free and sail with you. There is a lot of good sailing there and lots of coves to anchor out at night. In fact this last weekend 7 of us rafted up for our monthly "Full Moon Cruise". It was a bit cool (in the 50s) but good fun and good sailing. If you want to go to Savannah, give me some lead time and I will try to get there with my boat. You should also know about a get-to-gether for Montgomery boat owners that is scheduled for the Chesapeake starting June 14 and running to June 21. Last I heard there will be 5 Montgomerys there (two "15"s, two "17"s and one "23"). I believe that all Lyle Hess designed sailboats are also invited. I plan to be part of that group. We've thought about selling the house (too big now) and find a place with a dock on Lake Lanier or Lake Hartwell, but lake property is fairly high close to Atlanta. Went to Lake Weiss in Alabama, about as far as Hartwell, and lots were going for 1/4 the price....but do I want a home/vacation lot in a tiny Alabama town ?? I'll take the 'Rude to the dealer for a checkup. Most likely the water pump impeller is bad, and something could be stuck in the passages.... I had it in the garage for the last 5 months. I borrowed a friend's 37lb thrust trolling motor to (hopefully) carry me thru my 4 days of sailing on Lake Lanier. The Admiral even said that we could have an overnite (at the slip) if the weather's nice !! Stay in touch... I'll try the blown air trick into the water intake and out put, altho I think it's gonna take a new pump impeller. I made another goofy mistake while getting ready for next weekends sailing..I tried to straighten my mast a bit. Many may remember my first blunder with Stargazer (last June?) when the mast forestay slipped out of my fingers as I was getting ready to lower the mast. Well, it came down in a hurry (to say the least)!. I noticed a slight bow in the mast since then, and was reminded of this when I looked at pix of Stargazer on the road to Altanta from Fla...the mast was straight in the carry position. So I turn the mast down side up (sail slot up, not down), tie the bottom end to the tabernacle gallows and lay the mast in the rudder gallows. I then tie my 1/2 inch dock line to the mast head, and make like a Bungee jumper for a few dozen times, and the mast did look less bowed. Getting dark, so I back the trailer into the back yard, lower the jack and drive off. Well, the line is still attached, and the mast is higher then before...could NOT resist a few more bounces!! Well, on the 3rd bounce, the trailer wheel slips off the stand and the pipe buries itself in the ground up to the hitch!! It was just a few minutes work with th car jack to get things back to normal...but I sure felt stupid!! I used it on Whiskeytown Lake last week. I haven't used it enough to come to any firm conclusions, I did observe that it probably uses less gas and seems to have enough power to do the job as well as the Nissan 2.5. The railings fit just fine. The only adjustment needed was with the crescent wrench on the base plate. The water level was low at Whiskeytown so I had to use a rope extension to launch. My first experience in doing so. I tied a rope from the mast carrier to the ball hitch (approx 6' in length, adding another 3' overall length) while the trailer tongue was at the waterline. I jacked up the trailer wtih a trailer tongue wheel jack until it cleared the ball and it rolled rapidly back into the water and launched the boat without breaking the rope. Can anyone tell me a better way to launch with a rope? The Forest Service wouldn't let me keep the boat on the water overnight. Since I had a portable head on board they allowed me to stay with the self contained RV's. About 10:30 monday night the boat and trailer started rocking violently. I was sleeping in the boat with the hatch closed. I sat up for a minute just to see if I was dreaming. I wasn't. I kept rocking. I yelled and banged on the hatch cover until the rocking stopped - waking up the neighboring RVs in the process. They put flashlights on the boat a there was a bear near the trailer walking casually back into the forest. I had foolishly left the cooler filled with food in the cockpit. I was lucky the boat wasn't damaged. Is yours mounted directly to the bracket, or is it on an extension block slightly above the bracket like Bert's? Bert has a short shaft on a block that pops out of the water now and again. Did yours drag in the water when tilted up? I am also curious to know if you thought the Honda was any noisier due to its air cooled design. The local Honda dealer is going to be a the Pacific sail expo. I am going to see if he is offering any boat show pricing! <> Funny you should ask. Yesterday, I was at an auto parts store looking for alternatives to the bumper hitch on my truck. I was looking through a Reese trailer hitch catalog, and found a 39" extension that plugs into a standard 2" square receiver. It is designed for campers and motorhomes where the camper or motorhome overhangs the frame mounted hitch receiver significantly. I realized that this may be the perfect alternative to a trailer tongue extension. When you get to the ramp, you pull the pin on the normal hitch adapter, disconnect safety chains and lights, pull forward about four feet, slide in the longer adapter bar, and then re-insert your normal 2" hitch adapter into the tube and push the pin in. Bingo! a portable tongue extension that needs no welding, and can be swapped in/out in a manner of minutes. If 39" is not enough, one could duplicate this extension simply using 2" square tube with a bigger section welded on one end to receive the hitch. I may opt for the latter, as I am not fond of dipping my truck in salt water. Keep in mind that this system requires a square type hitch receiver to work. I have not figured out a stable way to due this with just a bumber mounted ball. <> Wow! Maybe what he really wanted was to go sailing in such a good looking boat! This might explain why he did not damage it! Scott ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: rc2222@pacbell.net Subject: M_Boats: Honda Date: 24 Apr 1997 14:46:17 -0700 Scott: My Honda mounts directly to the orignal bracket. The shaft does not drag in the water when tilted up. You do have to turn the motor approximately 45%, or so, when raising it out of the water so the lid won't hit the transom-(the '97 model may be different). Getting to and starting the engine is a little more complicated with the new stern railing in place-it will take some getting used to. Incidently, I don't have to tilt the Nissan when raising it out of the water. I didn't notice any noise difference while using the Honda compared to the Nissan. I picked up the lifelines at Svendsens- $ 119.25 for both. they included Pelican hooks which attach to the stern railing. They used 3/16"wire wrapped in plastic. These too, will take some time getting used to. I've found that I need lots of room to hike out on the coaming when need be. When not needed I'll attach the pelican hook to the toe rail so the lifeline won't get in my way. I'm concerned this might complicate my "genoa, gennaker/spinnaker sheet/block/cam cleat" arrangement. Thank's for the information re: tongue extension adapter. It sound so simple. I'll look into it. Its original owner lived in the Tempe, AZ region. He bought it with the idea of sailing on the Sea of Cortez, but ended up moving to Wisconsin before he did. We purchased it from him. He finished the interior himself using mahogany instead of the teak and ash that the factory finished boats had. He made some minor changes - some distinct improvements and some not so great. It's a pleasing golden color on the inside and white (for the Arizona sun) with black boot stripe, etc. on the outside. It has an EZ Loader trailer. Not perfect, but very nice. We've made the jump (like off a cliff) to a larger boat for Lake Superior and need to find a good home for our "Early Light" soon. I'm not trying to steal a sale from Larry B. Our boats are different and this does give M23 buyers another option. I have been wondering if the long shaft mounted on a block would get the motor up high enough that tilting and starting would be easier. Six inches is a lot longer, however. hmmm. I too was concerned that the lifelines might complicate hiking out. When Bert and I were out, we just reefed earlier and shortened down to the storm jib when conditions piped up. I think that the boat was much more manageable under balanced sail area, and we just played the main sheet a bit during big puffs (30+). Coming down from bigger boats, I am not used to having to jump up on the rail anyway. Maybe you could go back and find that bear--I bet he'd flatten out the boat a bit! By the way, I had Hogin add a second set of reefs to the main and make me a new storm jib. My working jib already has one set, so this leaves a variety of combinations. What fantastic scenery. We called ahead and got permission from the Yacht Club at the northern end of the lake to launch and tie up there. I'm sorry but I can't tremeber the name but it was something like Flathead Lake Yacht Club. There also is/was a marina on the SW side of the lake that you could put in at. The upper end of the lake near the eastern shore is shallow the rest is pretty deep. We sailed down the entire length of the lake to the southern end and spent couple of nights around Wild Horse island. There is a really nice cove to anchor in on the NW part of the island. While anchored there, we didn't see any wild gorses - in fact I think there're aren't any on the island anymore - but we did see two BIG mule deer with large antlers walking along the edge of the island about 30 yards from us while we were at anchor. I was able to get some video of them walking by. The scenery is spactacular, but the winds can come up suddenly. On the way back north on the lake, a big blow came along, and we pegged the knotmeter at 6 while surfing down some waves. I'm glad it came from behind us! I sailed Clear Lake (N. Cal.) out of Braitos Buckingham Marina. The Konocti Cup Regatta was going on, so there were lots of sailboats on the lake. I didn't enter in either the 26 mile or the 14 mile race... I didn't realize the event scedule until Wednesday last. I have instructed my computer to remind me next year, and I may well enter. I joined in on what must have been the last few downwind legs of the 14 miler, which ended at the Konocti Sailing Club. Looked like a good party going on, though I didn't stop (I was there to sail, afterall). I launched around noon. I usually launch at Konocti Harbor Resort, but they have fairly limited parking for boat trailers. With the Regatta, I figured things might be tight there. On the advise of someone from the Konocti Sailing Club, I found Braitos at the end of Buckingham Point. It was not at all crowded, and plenty of parking. The ramp could be steeper (my tailpipe was bubbling by the time I got the trailer in deep enought to retrieve my boat), but there is a dock along side of the ramp (a real plus when singlehanding). There was good wind all day... probably 7-10 knots in the early afternoon on the downwind run. At about 2:45, I turned around and beat north into a 12-15 knot wind. Nearly all the sails were off of the lake by then... they missed the good stuff. I needed that. Very theraputic. -- townsend@pacific.net (Stanley Townsend - M15 "Freya") ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Stanley Townsend Subject: M_Boats: Outboards Date: 29 Apr 1997 09:17:22 -0700 I read with interest all the comments about outboards... short vs. long shaft... water vs. air cooled. I have a Mariner "two-five" 2.5 HP. I assume this is short shaft. I have no modifications to my motor mount. The prop does tend to drag. My solution to this is not elegant, but it does work. I hook a short shock cord on the top back of the motor case, with the other end hooked on the transom. Gives just enough more tilt to keep the prop up out of the water. I imagine that I will stick with my Mariner until it dies. When I think about replacement, I am tempted by electric motors... quiet and odor free. I know I would give up range and speed, and would have to lug a battery around, but it is still tempting. 90% of my motoring is just out of and into the marina, when an electric would work fine. If I get caught a long ways out and the wind quits, it may be a different story. Any comments/experiences welcome. -- townsend@pacific.net (Stanley Townsend - M15 "Freya") ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Larry Barkhuff/Nv." <102562.2650@CompuServe.COM> Subject: M_Boats: News flash Date: 29 Apr 1997 12:58:24 EDT Terry, I understand that the cat is out of the bag so to speak....so you wish to tell all of the gang who our mystery builder is? I don't think there are many gorses left anywhere! I do need to read things before I send them! If I remember right, it was in late July or early August. That lake is NEVER warm enough to swim in. That is one cold lake! When I was there there weren't any anchorage restrictions; most people didn't ever anchor. That whole area is worth seeing even if you don't go sailing. Let me know how things turn out! (under the water tank??) and what's the best way to get cleaning water to it?? Mine has a foul smell to it, even though I passed a bucket or two of water to it from the cabin. We were going to sail there for a few day after spending 6 days on Jackson Lake. Unfortunately, after experiencing a heat wave, we went on to Glacier National Park and stayed in a small motel room. You'd be best to anchor off out of the wind. The camping we saw looked horrible. The lake dwarfs San Franciso's North Bay. It's quite a sight! For more information check in at the Forrest Service facility. Hitched it up to a huge deep cell, but could only get my M-17 to 1.5 mph and always felt extremely under powered. Got caught in a thunder/lightning storm one afternood and while we were running back to shore with the motor wide, the battery went dead...my wife used a few words I hadn't heard since I was in the military. Luckily I always carried a spare just in case. I now use a 6 hp Evinrude, which will move the boat at hull speed and it starts on the second pull, and I have a gas gauge on the tank.
