Ocean only mentions a 3/4" radius stone for Goaltender skates. After I purchased the set-up I called Profilier and they sold me either a 1/2" or 7/16" (can't remember). So keep that in mind when you order. Also, ordering from Profilier was little bit cheaper, but not a whole lot. Make sure you order for a Goalie blade as the jig to hold the stone has a wider grove to accomdate a wider goalie blade then a forwards skate blade. I also ended up ordering the case. It made a differenc ein traveling with the equipment. I got several inquiries and my apologies. No flames were sent my why although I admit I was deserving! :-) Anyway, just talked to Jan at Pro-Filer and asked here a few questions. For goalies they sell a 1/2" radius stone and 3/8" radius. I startedwith the 1/2" but when I went to 7/16" machine grind, my 1/2" Pro-Filier was flatten-out my hallow and the results where marginal. I re-ordered a 3/8" and that complements the 7/16" machine grind well. They are probably pretty close with the neglidgable difference in number measurements due different technologies. Pro-Filer's number is in the US is 800-827-3343, and in Canada is 800-465-5911. If you call Jan can either fill your order or give you the nearest retailer. Pro-filer's price and Ocean catalogue's sale price where about the same. As I mentioned they goalie Pro-filer comes in 1/2" and 3/8". The basic kit includes the Pro-Filer jig that holds a cylindrical stone in an aluminum case, a video for instruction, a flat stone for taking of the burred edge, honing oil, a flat disk to make sure the grind is flat, and a cloth for wiping off the honing oil. This costs $25.99 from Pro-filer. The canvas case, which I recommend if you carry it with you is an additional $9.99. (I think this is complete, but may have missed something, you can talk to or Email Jan at jbj@rea-alp.com) They are coming out with a diamond stone that is very durable and is a more aggsive sharpen. Honing oil isn't required and she said that a goalie in the USHL almost uses it exclusively since it can handle some pretty good nicks. That will go for $49.00 for the kit or $39.95 for the stone to replace in an existing kit. It sounded really interesting. When my stone wears down, I plan to get this newer stone. Jan also said that they will be putting a Web site soon (no address given). Hope this helps. Ed Hughes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Kevin R. Ron Ron ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Ed Hughes" Subject: Re: Skate Sharpening Date: 05 Jun 1997 19:07:29 -0600 Ron, The nice thing about a Pro-filer is that you really control how sharp the skate gets. If you are going to fully sharpen a blade that is somewhat dull, but not nicked very bad then you would apply about 50 strokes per skate. But if you do fewer strokes and without as much pressure then your skate will not be as sharp. If you did screw up your blade, a machine grind will get that taken care of. The only issue is if the Pro-filer comes in 3/4" (I don't think so) or if a 1/2" will work for you in between grinds. I have 7/16" on the grind, but the Pro-filer is 3/8", or a slightly deeper hallow. This works well for me. Hi David, Just want to let you know that you should consider this very carefully, especially if the helmet is HECC and CSA certified. With most mask manufacturers, painting a mask yourself will void the manufacturers warranty and the HECC and CSA certification of the helmet. All painting, disassembly, and assembly must be done by factory certified painters. That's one good-looking pad! I will probably be in the market for a set of new pads sometime this year, and more than likely, I will order Battrams. My new upper body pad is really nice...when I first got it I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen (you know, that "Cool, new equipment!" feeling). I've been using it for the past couple months, and I really like it. It covers more net than my old DR upper body did, especially above the shoulders (that's already saved me a couple of goals). The protection, from both slashes and pucks, is absolutely great. The other day a guy came in on a breakaway during practice, and on his follow-through from his wrist shot he slashed my arm. He came up and asked me if I was OK because it was a pretty hard slash...the cool part is, I never felt even the tiniest bit of pain! The mobility in the pad is excellent as well. I can still snap my glove out there as quick as before, and my range of motion has not decreased at all. I have had only one problem adjusting to the larger, more heavy-duty pad, and that was adjusting to the bounce off of the chest pad when cradling the puck. And that has not been a difficult adjustment to make! (that was just part of MY break-in period, I guess...) The unit only took about 3-4 uses to break in fully. The only thing that has gone wrong with the pad (minor detail) is that the BATTRAM logo on the collar piece is starting to rub off because of my swinging neck guard. That doesn't bother me, although maybe you should switch to screen-painted logos for that part of the pad (after all, you want your name seen, don't you?). Overall, I am very pleased, as the Battram upper body pad has proven to be the best for both PROTECTION and VALUE. Date: 15 Jun 1997 18:42:38 -0400 Hi Bobbie, Thanks for the compliments! All of those places you listed sell good gear... Source for Sports is a decent place with lots of great products. Simmons however... it seems as though they try to push the Boddam line, and their own Simmons line (made by Boddam) and this is accomplished by having them show you a pad by Brians or Heaton, and then they show the Boddam copy of it for less money... Of course, myself as a manufacturer can spot things the average customer cannot, this accounts for the price reduction. Brians is no longer selling to Simmons, since the AIR PAC logo found on Brians gear was used on some products by Boddam last year, I think this made some people at Brians mad... Source also trys to push the VIC McMartin line alit as well... if you notice, they give high ratings in their buyers guide to the VIC line, and not so good ratings to the Heaton or Vaughn lines.. and even the Brians line. In my opinion the best equipment on the market today comes from the following companies, Vaughn, Brians, Heaton(Koho), the new Bauer line is also impressive. I base this opinion on workmanship, quality of materials used, also on the style and look of the equipment. One thing I do not like about the new Gatekeeper pad, and the KOHO pad is the fact that the straps are just sewn into the pad rather than comming through the facing of the pad, this will make changing them a problem if they break or wear out, and the face just doesn't look like a pad. Over the next months we will be working on our new designs, this includes updating the catch glove with a new backing and pocket as well as a new thumb that is designed to direct the flow of the puck into the pocket... making it easier to make glove saves. We are also working on some new angled bends to our blocker.. We have also reduced the weight of these pieces of equipment with a new AIR-CORE system we have come up with, this will also be used in the pads, it makes them more flexible, and reduces the weight. The catch and blocker have lost about .75 of a lb just by some new ideas we have had. Our current roller hockey international goalies are using some prototypes of the new gloves... however the pocket has not been changed on these gloves... that will come a little later on...along with the new blocker designs. The pad line our goal is to get lighter, yet still maintain its durability, this is a challenge, as generally lighter isn't always better. We have also redesigned our logo, and lettering on the pads to a more modern and unique text, this I think will look really cool... we will be replacing the pad numbers with names... so if anyone has any ideas please let us know... We have a name picked for the top end pad... and it will work well with some catchy advertising we plan on doing. I am really excited about the upcoming changes, we hope to have them in place within the next 6 weeks... and the web site updated accordingly... Scott" Subject: goalie pants & suspenders Date: 19 Jun 1997 09:01:03 +0000 Greetings, On the subject of pants (breezers, coulottes, trousers, etc.) I wear a CCM 650, size XL. If one were to go by waist sizes, these are about two sizes too big (I'm a 32 waist, 6'2", 200LBS). I purchased them at a local shop when I lived in Colorado and one of the "goalie" salesmen there convinced me that bigger was better. Mine are a bit loose fitting and have great coverage. The CCM's dry quickly (coolmax lining) and can be disassembled for cleaning. I do wear suspenders (over the body pad) because I keep my pants belt a bit on the loose side. This means that the pants always fall into the right position whenever I recover from a save. Having them a bit on the loose side also gives a certain amount of freedom of movement and ensures that they follow me thoughout a save. Recently I've had a chance to look at pants from Brown, Tackla, and Vaughn. I prefered the new Vaughns by far - though I've not had an opportunity to play in them. The Vaughns are a new two-piece design that feels a bit odd at first, but has excellent coverage and flexibility. Since I'm still on the learning curve, I tend to take a few pucks in the thigh area. My current pants cover this area well, but the Vaughns cover even better - without feeling bulky or restrictive. You might want to check around, I've heared of some refs not liking the Brown pad thinking the side panels are "too much". I've found it's best to keep the refs on your side - no matter what your level of play. ...My $0.25 -- Kevin C. They are a very well made set of pants with good protection and fit. I would highly recommend them. I've heard that Brown is only a so-so pant, but can't speak from direct experience. The McM is probably the least expensive. I wear suspenders with the Brian pants. I didn't with the CCM pants I had prior to the Brian's. Suspenders offers two advantages: first it allows me to wear the pants loose around the waist which allows me to tuck my chest protector into my pants. They chest protector and pants seem to work better together in this way. I also get some movement inside the pants, so when I twist to look behind the net while not moving my feet the pants stay square to the front of the net (they don't twist with me) so a shot off a quick pass might still hit the front of the pants where most area and most protection are. Second, the suspenders are worn over my chest pad serving to hold that unit down and not allowing it to ride up when I crouch our move my arms. Just my two cents worth. He did have to remove an optional belly flap in order to tuck his Vaughn vision chest in front. So when you try the pants on, wear your chest protector to see how it tucks in, in front & back. He liked the look and feel of the new two piece Vaughns, but couldn't find them in his size. I think he got a 52 or 54. They seemed a little unorthodoxed as the front thigh pads where these big flat forward facing plates. When you put them on that front thigh pad flexes and curves a little arounf the thigh. They also have alarge belly pad that interfered with me tucking in my chest protector. I soon just left the belly pad out. They have a good belt and haven't wrong suspenders since high school. The good news: I love them, that thigh pad really delfects & aborbs the energy of any shot. Since they flare out they give a little more width on the coverage then most other goal pants that have the thight pad are curved the fit around the thigh. They seem to form a flat wall across the thighs. There movement is very comfortable, light and no binding. Great hip pointer protection. The bad news: I don't know if Louisville makes them any more. I talked to Louisville customer service a while back, and they said they weren't sure they where going to continue them. She did say that they could be custom made. I will think very seriously about getting another set when these where out. No rips, tears, or broken stitches. I've had no problem with them weight-wise. They're well padded and not light, but they're not heavy either. Rebound control is a little tricky. The thigh pads are hard plastic and give a long bounce sometimes, but usually not far. They do have extra padding in the five-hole which I've used to literally catch pucks that otherwise would have gone through. They dry very quickly. A couple hours outside and they're dry. If it's a goalie's \\ stick, it's a righty. Does this make \\____ any sense to anyone? \____| I won't *even* get into "which side is the left side" (goalie's left vs. left wing). If you happen to be in Ann Arbor, there is a place called College Shoe that sells goalie equipment (Pat Brown, who runs the store, may be able to rder a pair for you if he doesn't have any there). Or there is a place in Windsor called Bob Reaume's on Tecumseh Blvd (take Oulette to Tecumseh, turn left and drive a ways, it'll be on the right). I don't know if that helps, but I tend to get a lot of stuff through either College Shoe or Reaume's - they're cheaper and you get better service than you do at Perani's. Perani's tends to be overpriced. Or you can wait until Perani's big hockey fest that they have every summer at lakeland Arena - they sell off all of the previous year's models for great prices. Last year I got $900 Vaughan leg pads for $550. Plus they have some other cool stuff there. Patty #33 Howdy all: I went skate shopping today. I had a pressure point at one place on the shell and the sports shop warmed it and popped it out a bit (they are boys skates but the Bauer distributor who was an ex-Canuck trainer marked where to pop the shell for me). If you really like Bauer and that is the sort of problem, you can have this done. I have found bauer to be really supportive and helpful with clients. If you like their stuff find out who the local rep is and see what they can special order for you. These days it seems like special orders aren't really that expensive. Bauer went to a lot of trouble for me and I was really impressed. I don't know that the latest Bauers are all that different but mine have lasted for ages and still give good support, I just change the blade occasionally when it gets worn down. No seriously, I would have a mirror like sliver as a base colour covering the entire mask, with my teams logo on the chin area (a windmill) and possibly the skeleton of a sharks mouth engulfing the cage, e.g. Moog's Bruins mask, Hextall's old Quebec mask, Beezer's Florida mask...you get the idea!! an animals (or fish!!) open mouth over the cage with the top set of teeth at the top and bottom set on the chin. To preface, my team is called the Flames, and I have acquired the nickname Cujo, 'cause as my teammates put it, I fight like a wild dog for the puck. That given, here's how my mask is painted. It is black, on the crown emerging from a sheet of flame is Cerberus, the three headed hound that guards the gates to Hades. Running down the sides a castle wall, that terminates at the chin in a set of gates. Well, I did just what the robot said, replying to its mail, and I also sent a new "subscribe" message to the robot. I soon received this: > WARNING: > Send in a new mail, INSTEAD OF REPLYING > the next time when issuing (un)subscribe requests. > > 32728 edrush@godzilla.activesw.com > edrush@godzilla.activesw.com followed by another "You have been removed". Since the robot can't make up its mind, perhaps the list administrator reads the list, will see *this* message, and fix the bugs. If so, thanks. If not, thanks anyway for hosting the list. -- Ed Rush currently contracting for Active Software, 3255-1 Scott Blvd, Suite 201, Santa Clara, Calif. mailto:edrush@godzilla.activesw.com (current day e-address) mailto:EdRush@fan.net (permanent; checked mostly at night) 408-969-5643 (current day phone) 408-257-4288 (home: Cupertino, California) http://www.flash.net/~erush/ (updated 23rd June 1997) http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/track/9779 (hockey team) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Matthew Malicki Subject: Re: Heading for the bench Date: 03 Jun 1997 00:46:43 -0400 Howdy: >Plus, you shouldnt be heading for the bench until you know it is the >opposition who has the penalty... so, if your team has possession of the >puck, and the play is still going on and the ref has his hand up.. its a >pretty sure bet a delayed penalty is happening! Don't be too sure. When I was playing at MSU, I was watching the refs, and our guys held the puck into the zone with the ref's arm up. Knowing it was a penalty on them, I headed for the bench. However, once I sat down, the ref put his arm down, and the other team got the puck, and skated towards the empty net! I scrambled towards the net, but they were called offsides. I screamed at the ref, and he tried to explain that he changed his mind. That was the closest I ever came to hitting a ref. If you weren't aware of it, the list was down for quite some time....I don't know the details though. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how to paint a Cooper SK3000 helmet. I want to paint part of it black, to match my pads. As for nail biter games....the best thing I have found is to just repeat one word, like puck, over and over in your head anytime the puck is in your zone. If you don't think about the score, then it becomes less of a problem.
