Originally, we were only going to list the top five, but after looking at the mountain of solid software, we knew we needed to let the belt out and include a few more games. Hence, this week we'll highlight the Top Seven Nintendo 64 Games of the Year--profiling one or two games a day until Friday, when the absolute best of '99 is revealed. Whittling the list down to seven was quite a Herculean task; many great games had to fall by the wayside. The titles that made the year-end list are of stunning caliber: they either represent the best of their genre or they introduce wonderful new concepts to the world of gaming that couldn't be ignored. Keep checking back the whole week--on Friday we'll make it worth your while. We have some nifty prize packs, overflowing with gaming goodies that will definitely help you ring in the New Year. So, without further ado… Top Seven Nintendo 64 Games of the Year: Number Six... Rocket: Robot on Wheels Super Mario 64 truly launched a genre, the 3-D platformer, with its unbelievable worlds and its completely original play mechanics. Since then, few games have done much to improve on the basics found in Mario 64 except Banjo-Kazooie, Rayman 2 and now, Ubi Soft and Sucker Punch’s Rocket: Robot on Wheels. What separate Rocket from the masses aren’t just the incredible "little touches" found around each corner, but the employment of real-world physics. Usually, conventional laws of gravity and inertia are tossed into orbit in the 3-D platform world; the programmer assigns how far things skid or bounce. Not so in Rocket; objects are given specific masses, and when Rocket tosses them, they bobble or fall how they would in the real world. You actually have to think about mass and velocity before you throw things. Normally, heavy amounts of thinking would desiccate a simple platformer, but in the case of Rocket, it enhances the experience, offering a new twist on the genre. The graphics are wonderfully stylized, from the Marvin the Martian-like appearance of Rocket to the slick architecture of the Grecian gardens. There is just so much to do in these highly-detailed worlds: play paint ball with the aptly-named HoverSplat, or build a roller coaster with a sweet customizer. The game constantly comes through with exciting mini-games and sub-quests, and, well, any game in which you can throw sheep goes over big with us. Here's the conclusion of our stellar review of Sucker Punch’s break-out hit, which we gave 92 points out of 100: "There really is a paucity of negative things I can say about Rocket. From the brilliant inclusion of Newtonian physics to the sonorous graphics, Rocket is a real winner. I can hardly wait to see what Sucker Punch has up its collective sleeve--for if their next release surpasses the delivered promises of this title, Rare could have a little competition when it comes to 3-D platformers for the Nintendo 64. Rocket is that good." Number Five... WinBack Nintendo 64 fans were sidelined last holiday season as they watched PlayStation owners jump for joy over the release of Metal Gear Solid, a stealth-oriented adventure that was just as strong on plot as it was on action. This year, though, Koei applied the proverbial bandage with WinBack, a startlingly good spy thriller that puts the fate of the entire world in your hands. Its similarities to Metal Gear are plenty, but WinBack has a few tricks up its flak jacket to separate the two, and in my opinion, give it the edge. Some people complained that there was too much ‘show’ and not enough ‘do’ in MGS, and they aren’t necessarily wrong. It was a decidedly short game bloated with a number of extensive cinemas. WinBack is almost all game play, putting you in complete control of the adventure. And speaking of control, there’s another area in which WinBack excels—-it’s accessible to anybody with a good understanding of the N64 control pad. A great multi-player mode is also present and accounted for, something that MGS definitely lacked (you can keep the VR missions, thank you). Duking it out with a buddy in a variety of arenas with a complete arsenal is solid fun--and an excellent addition to the cart--much to the credit of Koei. The graphics are strong and efficient, and the audio is great, but where WinBack shines is in its superb pacing. The plot unfolds at a rate that always holds interest. The Wanderer gave WinBack high marks (92 out of 100) for "the sheer amount of fun you’ll have playing it." And, after all, isn’t that why we play these things in the first place? Wanna see what came in at number seven? . ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 08:13:16 EST From: "Justin Smith-Williams" Subject: Re: [N64] Top seven?? 64 games of 1999 Where did you learn how to read it says 12 months of solid releases and out of that he picked the top seven you rocket scientist. >From: TreyTable@aol.com >Reply-To: n64@lists.xmission.com >To: n64@lists.xmission.com >Subject: Re: [N64] Top seven?? 64 games of 1999 >Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 16:01:24 EST > >In a message dated 99-12-14 07:56:14 EST, you write: > > > 1999 will probably be remembered as the Year of the > > Dreamcast, but it should also be marked as > > twelve months of solid Nintendo 64 releases.
