Well, in china they aren;t celebrating a centrury or even a millenium. their calendar is set in the year 4000 something... and i know in japan their official calendar is pegged after something else, i'm not sure but it could be the birth of one of their emperors. less than 50% of the world celebrate the christian calendar. I enjoyed the 2000 switch, but i;m saying its not a big deal whether we celebrate 2000 or 2001, because so much guesswork has already gone into the calendar that we might be celebrating 2000 years from nothing important in particular. So actually, i'm on your side, i just find it annoying that people would like to get technical and point out how its all wrong that we're celebrating 2000 and not 2001. its pointless. that train of thought would only work if the world/universe started at year 1 and by default there should be no year zero. unfortunatelly, time existed long before year 1, and recorded history existed for several hundred years on this planet before year 1. so indeed, we are celebrating 2000 years from some point in our history. that is all i'm trying to say.
