They can't make a controller to save their company. The Sidewinder Force Feedback stick is nice, but that's a $60 item and the last console to include a joystick was the Neo Geo. It's gamepads these days, and in the terms of gamepads Microsoft sucks. I had the Sidewinder pad, that D-Pad sucked, worse than the first American Saturn pad. While more power is always good, cost is a tremendous factor in acceptance of a console, at least initially. The inclusion of a hard drive and the added power will certainly drive up costs. Moreover, the hard drive, as the Wall Street Journal article mentioned, will increase complexity, risk of crashes, and cost. The hardware design alone also seems like it will drive up costs, let alone make anyone's living room looks gaudy. The controller also rises issues of ergonomics and complementing the advanced gameplay Microsfot wishes to provide. Quite simply, I don't see this console becoming a success at all, regardless of how much Microsoft cares to push it. It'll appeal to PC gamers perhaps, but I can't see fans that grew on Sega or Nintendo's consoles going over to it. Sony's market perhaps; still, here's one console that seems to have brawn and no brains. For instance I > have an AMD K6-2 475 MHz but Need For Speed 3 runs better on my 33 MHz PSX > than the PC version does with 475 MHz. Two things though...the PSX version is running at a much lower resolution and the CPU in your PC has a lot of 'overhead' to process in addition to the game. In the X-Box it will just be working on games. Also, the X-box will have a nVidia graphics chipset....and nVidia simply kicks ass. Again, I am no Microsoft fan, but AMD and nVidia are two very big players with excellent products. So what exactly will the X-box play? Will is just be PC games or will it have it's own exclusive games? >> Guess so.
