It has to do with how many connection points (hubs, relays...whatever), line quality, and traffic on the between where you are calling and where you are. For example, when I lived with my parents, I would always connect at 44K when I would dial in to my University account or to AOL. When I moved to where I am living now I would usually get 46K and sometimes as high as 49K. But I could never get higher than 44K at my old place because of the limits of the lines from that location. Anyway..to sum it all up...get DSL or cable. Once you have one of those, your ISP really becomes irrelevant. No cut offs, fast speeds, no dial-in, etc, etc, etc... Up until 5.0 came out, just getting online was a hassle. There were neverending busy signals, cut offs, etc etc. As of now, they've pretty much fixed that. But that doesn't mean AOL is good. For starters, it takes a lot of your computer's resources as pointed out earlier. Secondly, the timer is horrendous. I don't see any real reason why I should have to deal with a timer that appears so frequently. Seeing as how I do a lot of HTML editing and so forth, I'm often running Composer, Adobe, Dreamweaver, or some other program, while keepng tabs on things online and so forth. Because I'm editing a page or what have you, i'm considered 'idle'. I then therefore have to frequently change back to AOL to click the bloody (and somewhat sneaky) box to stay online so I don't interrupt my operations there....which it often does anyways. I still have the occasional lost connection or dead connection which is occasionally annoying -- especially during big downloads. The browser AOL uses is furthermore nothing short of trash. While most people use Netscape or IE, there's little purpose in AOL having such a poor default browser. The image quality has all the clarity of viewing a sunset on a window dreanched with grease and oil. Then there's the fact that because I often choose to retain the e-mail I've read in case I need to recall something (a reoccuring scenario) that I can't simply delete everything all at once. I have to go one by one....I spent over an hour in February doing nothing but deleting all my old e-mails dating back to April 1999. And then there's Microsoft. The amount of reboots, crashes, errors, upgrades, bugs, and so on are larger than the Gameboy and Playstation library added exponentially. I'm not an incompetent computer person -- I realize there'll always be problems with OSs, and so on, as well as some hardware issues on my computer's behalf. However, that much is inexcusable. And that's essentially my wonderous relationship with both companies. Thank goodness AOL didn't merge with Microsoft....
