Yes, it smoothes out corners (if it can do this to PSX games what's the deal with Ridge Racer 5?) but doesn't improve framerates. It can speed up load time, but that doesn't work very well with games that were designed to stream at 2X (FF8 for example). Also seams between polygons (Destruction Derby 2 shows seams really well) are gone. All these effects can be turned off though. If you've been in Mad Monster Mansion, you transform into a pumpkin, exit the stage, make your way through the graveyard gate (you had to have pecked it down already as Banjo and Kazooie), enter the house through the hole, get Mumbo to turn you back, beak bomb the coffin in the center, beak bomb the switch to raise the water level. I'd also recommend Dead or Alive 2 -- the fighting engine itself is also rather simple, with only four buttons to use (punch, kick, throw, free) and while it's simple, it's extremely fun and has some depth to it with that alone. Soul Caliber is also another game that's pretty easy to jump into; as is Power Stone. I've never played the Virtua Fighter series (save the original Saturn version once) but I may just pick up 3tb for $25 to try it out (any comments?). Personally, I'd skip on Capcom's offerings for now as they're a little too complex if you're trying to ween yourself into the genre again. Not too many 2-D options for N64 (are there any?). What would be a good 2-d fighter to start out with? How is Street fighter Alpha 3 for someone who hasn't played fighting games regularly? I know there's a DC version coming, but if the PSX version is Arcade perfect, I can't see paying the extra money for it. Any suggestions? It's a decent game, not the best in the genre by far, but I'd buy it if I could find it. > What would be a good 2-d fighter to start out with? I'd pick either a copy of Street Fight Collection or Street Fighter Alpha 3 both on PlayStation or Saturn (although finding SFC on Saturn could prove difficult and the only way to play Alpha 3 on the Saturn is the import Street Fighter Zero 3). Street Fighter Collection gives you Super Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (the most difficult Street Fighter game so far) and Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold. Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold would be the reason to get it though. It's a great first fighting game, if you ask me. It doesn't have as much depth as SF Alpha 3, but that makes it easier to learn. Then, of course you get the two Super Street Fighter 2 games. Super Street Fighter 2 isn't really worth playing, but Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is the best Street Fighter 2 game. Also the most difficult, but once you get good at it the game can be very fun. Street Fighter Alpha 3 is another good choice as a first though, especially since it's a $20 game these days. It's different from any other Street Fighter I've played (although I admit I never got to play much of the Street Fighter 3 series) since it has a different way of performing throws (after Street Fighter, Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition, Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold, and Street Fighter EX + Alpha a change like that took a while to unlearn what I have leaned) and the addition of the counter rolls and other kinds of counter moves it took some getting used to. But SFA3 does have the World Tour mode, a Street Fighter version of Edge Master mode (Soul Blade) if you may. A side note, Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the PSX isn't arcade perfect. there's still some missing animations and some load time (quick, but still there) that isn't found in the arcade (or Dreamcast). I was going to get the DC version of Alpha 3 but I couldn't wait any longer, so I got the PSX version (for $30 cheaper too) and I'm not unhappy with my decision. Besides, there's still Street Fighter 3 (something only the PSX and Saturn could only dream about doing) to get for the Dreamcast. Dave The SEGA Dreamcast will indeed cure your acne. It will make you popular with the opposite sex, bring you material rewards beyond your wildest dreams and, most likely, cause passersby to pull out their wallets and hand you $5. The Dreamcast will mow the lawn for you, provide heat in the winter, cool fresh breezes in the summer and can be used, in case of emergency, as a flotation device. Also, the Dreamcast gives off a lemony-fresh scent and will one day unite all humanity under the gleaming banner of peace. You need not ever fear stubbing your toe again with the SEGA Dreamcast. -- Daily Radar [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ End of n64-digest V1 #1136 ************************** [ To quit the n64-digest mailing list (big mistake), send the message ] [ "unsubscribe n64-digest" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ]
