Back when the SNES was popular, Sega released the Sega CD. Hoping to stay even with Sega, Nintendo went to Sony and asked them help them design a CD add on for the SNES. Sony put a young engineer, Ken Kutaragi, on the project. Nicknamed the PlayStation-X, or PSX for short, it was scheduled to come out. But in the 11th hour, Nintendo backed out, due to the failure of the Sega CD and the royalty model the PSX had. Sony was furious that they lost millions in R&D for nothing, and kept the machine in lay away for a while. Then, after tweaking the original model, the unleashed the PlayStation on the world. The N64 was $20 on > that > one site, but with the sequel coming and without having actually have played > > it, I wasn't about to commit to that one. One of the best games I've ever played. The control is great on both the N64 and PSX versions, on both versions you can use either the D-Pad or analog stick for movement but I prefer the D-Pad. It's the kind of game that takes little time at all to learn but you'll end up playing it for hours. On both versions the framerate it perfect too. There is draw in on the PSX version, but it's really about as bad as the draw in on Soul Reaver (doesn't hurt gameplay at all). There's no multiplayer deathmateches per se, but there is some fun 2 play modes. My favorite is horse. (you can change the word horse to whatever you want (I prefer d*ckhead, so the loser is the d*ckhead instead of the horse) it to be. Horse is about one upping your opponent. If player one does a trick for 100 points the player 2 has to match or beat the 100 or they will get a letter. It took me the month of October to finish the game and that was playing for about 2 hours almost every day of October 1999. No game library is complete without a copy of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. The differences between the N64 and PSX versions are slight. I think the PSXs has better graphics than the N64s but only marginally better. There's a bit of N64 blur on the N64 version. The N64 version doesn't have all of the lyrics present that can be found in the PSX version, but I think that's more political than technical. One song that lacks lyrics on the N64 version is "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" by Primus. A sample of the lyrics, "Jerry was a race car driver, drove so goddamn fast, never did get no checkered flag be never did come in last..". I'm sure you understand why that's not in the N64 version. Also when a player's skater hits the ground in the PSX version there's a brief spray of blood (really a bunch of red squares) and that's not in the N64 version. Most of all the N64 lacks the cool arsed FMV that was littered throughout the PSX THPS. Throughout the stages, most prominent in the Minneapolis stage, there were big screens set up all over the "world" with a music video that corresponded to the song being played. In the Minneapolis stage it was also found on small TVs in shop windows, all in real time. It was pretty darn cool. Added nothing to gameplay but cool just the same. The N64 version doesn't, though, have the load time of the PSX version, but the load time of the PSX version was limited to a 12 second break when loading a new "world." If you have both the N64 and PSX I'd say get the PSX version. Sure the DC version is coming in June so you could wait for that too. But if you just have an N64 by all means go and buy Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Oh, for the guy who loved the stunt mode in Rush 2, you must get THPS as well.
