I went for a year without replacing it, most of the time doubting I ever would. In late 1998 I finally did replace it and my library is now over 30 games and I just have to say "I love Nintendo". Although only a quarter or so of my games did I pay full price for, my latest acquistion, Excitebike 64, was bought new. This game rocks. Finally a racing game that requires finesse. Every other racing game I've played allowed me to leave hold the accelerator button down for the length of the race. Try that in Excitebike 64 and you wont last long. The variety of techniques required to do well is astounding and gives the game great depth. Heck, even the tutorial mode is more challenging than most other racers at their hardest. Excitebike for the NES included? A nice extra to be sure. As someone who rarely rents, I generally put games into four categories upon hearing about them: 1) Buy new 2) Buy used while still semi-new for around $30 on eBay or the Game Trading Zone 3) Buy used for $5-$25 whenever they can be had for such on eBay or the Game Trading Zone 4) Ignore Lately, I've put more games in the #1 category than ever before. Currently Perfect Dark, Bomberman 2, Mario Tennis, and Zelda 2 all reside there. This is an exciting time to be an N64 owner. 75% of own games are 4-players and get used as such frequently with my nieces and nephews. You say why not get the PSX as well to get the best of both worlds? I say there's enough good games on the N64 alone to keep you and your money well parted, so the PSX is a needless extra expense. I chime in with Greg here to say that I think Nintendo's best year is this year not the last. The thing is, it SEEMS like the Nintendo 64 has dropped off the face of the earth simply because magazines like it that way. They're too busy covering Dreamcast, Playstation 2 and whining about the lack of Dolphin information to care. The bottom line however is the fact that no time in history has so many good Nintendo 64 games converged. This isn't like last year's RARE threesome (well, it was reduced to two when PD was delayed). There are at least 2 third party games I know of that is highly anticipated, namely Ogre Battle 64 and TWINE. RARE certainly will have our handsful this year and probably early next year with Dino Planet, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Tooie, the upcoming Perfect Dark and whatever surprises they have in store. The games are just too many to name and I am not in the mood to name them all but just know that Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan has said we haven't seen the last of EAD yet. There will likely be a surprise title or two. There's Eternal Darkness and perhaps another title from Left Field, and our buying habits for the next 6 to 9 months becomes rather cluttered. Anothr thing... I made a prediction to myself that Nintendo would do very well by re-releasing the N64 in colored casing. And just like Game Boy's Play It Loud line of colored products revived the Game Boy market and primed it for its move into Game Boy pocket a few years later, Nintendo 64 in color is doing exactly the same thing for the N64 market. Sure, there are people who are getting a second N64 because they happen to like the colors, but there bound to be many many people who is now buying one because of price, and the colors and neat packaging may have spurred them on to buy no instead of sitting and thinking about it. This next few months is going to be very interesting indeed. Hurrah for the N64... - -- Dexter S. Tendo Box - Nintendo e-zine Http://www.tendobox.com "Gregory A. Yeah, well the best games on a Nintendo system always appear at the end of a life cycle, heck, for any console just about. Unless they died a horrible bloody death (3D0,. Jaguar, Lynx, 32-X) 1995 had Yoshi's Island and DKC2 (among others) and 1996 had Mario RPG and DKC3 (among others). The PlayStation is getting Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Cross, two games that look to be great, CC more than FF9. All the tricks have been exposed and the programmers have the pedal to the metal.
