Definition of a REAL gamer in my book: 1. He or she never uses walkthroughs or codes. 2. Incase of getting stuck in a game he or she plays te part with a friend by his side. 3. Never buys a Playstation. 4. Must always be able to play a game to death and reach all objectives within 75 hours. 5. NEVER hits the reset button when he is behind. 6. Is always competative, but never too competative to teach a friend during a game tips. 7. Is always willing to teach a non-experienced gamer. 8. Always believes he can win even if he is far behind. 9. Never leaves a game unfinished longer then a year. (except the game FIFA64, Clayfighters 33,3 or Jeopardy) 10. If he fails in any of the nine rules displayed above, he can always calls himself a real gamer if he stands by rule 3 ;-) These rules are only a setup towards a theory of real gamer. Yes, the direction. I noted at E3 that I wasn't too impressed with T3; and I see why now. T3 is almost nothing like the first two installments so far; it has "Turok", the control scheme, and so basic other elements, but this one draws far more into the comic style and series that it doesn't share the same overly dynamic world of the second one. Instead, this one is more like Resident Evil and Shadowman -- only scarier it seems (at least, compared to Shadowman, I can't begin to say it's more so than RE yet). The graphics have lost those super complex, ultra detailed models the second one sported and instead of gone for a more smoother character model look which is actually quite impressive. In the opening sequence, the characters lips move perfectly with the dialogue; and for the record, the real-time intro runs something like a Night of the Living Dead and RE mixture. It's actually quite well done, even if I have seen similar things before. It just wasn't on the N64... Anyways, again, I haven't even solved the first puzzle, but things look promising so far. As you begin in an a seemingly abandoned (and destroyed) building you have to somehow gain access to the building across the street -- not a problem as there's a glass hallway immediately accessible. That is, until the flying ship that roam about outside (as you can see through the glass in the building) crashes right into it in realtime. And then you make your way through dimly lit halls, running across the occasionally mutiliated human body with nothing more than a blade and bow (if you find it). And that's about the time the little monsters begin. Another cool touch is as you look outside the windows of the building from where you start, you can see about five HUGE tentacles just moving about over the entire top of the building -- and that's the one you what to get into. The other cool feature are the cinemas; while there's a definite departure from the original, everything's lip synched perfectly, and represented nicely. Choosing between the two characters is cleverly blended into the cinemas (upon the death of Turok seen in T1 and T2). That said, I'm a bit disappointed. The dynamic changes the Turok series represents between installments is extremely impressive, but my personal preference has me sorely wanting something closer to T2 than the RE atmosphere this one features. The graphics themselves have gone through a more drab color palette to reflect the moody atmosphere, and while it still looks good, again, my personal preference leans to T2's holiness. For the record Dave, the framerate so far is better than T2's; it's not butter smooth still (see ex. Dreamcast), but it certainly seems better. And Eric, I can't say if it's better than T2 or not as I just got it, but I'll have more impressions to spew as I progress. Of course, perhaps once I solve this bloody first puzzle I may be able to get things moving=) Aldo Merino - ----------------- Tendo Box http://www.tendobox.com [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2000 10:45:21 -0400 From: "Dave Rhodes" Subject: Re: [N64] a real ?@!%! - ----- Original Message ----- From: Boudewijn de Kemp To: Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2000 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [N64] a real ?@!%! > And the Atari 2600 and the Atari600xl for that mather too. Picture this: You are a software devolperhouse and you designed a game with huge production costs and the game is absolutly gorgeous and has great gameplay. You release it on the market and the game goes through the charts in the first weeks and you are almost out of your development/production costs. And then the game stops selling. You start to ask yourself what did we do wrong. Then you discover that for every sold copy there where made five "illegal" copies. So you learn, Sony comes with a other pitch for a game and you win it! Will you be spending again so much time on research and gameplay and production and development costs? It is a business you know. Nintendo games also have huge budgets, but the cartridge can't be copied (I know that there is a Zip-drive cartridge kit available, but that is way more expensive then a simple burner and therefor expandable is this example). So the games (if they are good!!!!!!) will sell accordingly and yes there will be made a profit. So what platform would you design your best work for then?
