Because price is a factor, I think Nintendo will go with the cheapest high quality format.... that may be the cardboard front, covers or perhaps even mini jewel cases contained in a bigger cardboard box. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Shahed Chowthuri is every videogame console maker's dream player. Chowthuri, 23, a software engineer from Alexandria, Va., bought a Sega Dreamcast on Sept. 9, 1999, the first day the console was available. In August, he bought a second Dreamcast system. If that wasn't enough, he's already pre-ordered a PlayStation2, Sony's much-anticipated next-generation game machine due out in two weeks. When Chowthuri bought his second Dreamcast machine he signed up for Sega's fledgling online game network, SegaNet (http://www.sega.net). The network lets people match up with other players over the Internet through their videogame systems. Now, Chowthuri spends several hours a week online playing Chu Chu Rocket, a cat-and-mouse puzzle game, and Sega Sport's NFL 2K1 football game with players around the country. But where Chowthuri has gone, will others follow? Sega (http://www.sega.com), Sony (http://www.sony.com) and rival makers of videogame consoles and software are counting on such avid fans to usher in the videogame industry's long-awaited age of convergence, where people will use their systems to access the Internet. So far, though, the concept has been more promise than reality. There are a number of reasons why. To date, Sega is the only one of the top four videogame machine makers to build a 56K dial-up modem into its device, though others make add-on modems available at an extra cost. Playing games over the Net isn't the same as playing against someone sitting in the same room. Net connections have something called latency, which means they don't always carry digital data at the same rate. That can lead to game action stuttering or stopping momentarily in mid-play. Players who log on with faster modems can have an unfair advantage over players connecting over slower modems. In addition, players complain that machines aren't simple enough to set up to play games online, according to an August 2000 research report on the videogame industry from James Lin, a technology analyst and managing director at investment banker Sutro & Co. (http://www.sutro.com). As a result, early predictions that online game revenue for the videogame business would total $1.2 billion by 2001 have fallen drastically short. More recent estimates put the total at about a quarter of that, according to Lin. Given all that, it's no surprise consumers aren't sure whether they want to use game machines to go online. In a recent poll by researcher PC Data (http://www.pcdata.com), 30.5 percent of people surveyed said they were ``extremely'' or ``very'' interested in playing online games on their videogame machines, compared with 45.4 percent who were ``somewhat'' interested, and 24 percent who were ``not very'' or ``not at all'' interested. ``As far as the next generation consoles are concerned, players are more excited about the better graphics,'' said Matt Gravett, a games analyst with PC Data in Reston, Va. ``The online component is interesting, but they don't know what to make of it yet.'' The future is even fuzzier when it comes to guessing whether people will want to use game consoles for regular Net activities such as reading e-mail and browsing Web sites. The question of whether or not people want to use their game machines for Net access is quickly becoming more important as most next-generation game consoles will include some form of Internet capability. Analysts and others believe game consoles won't hit their stride as Internet devices until people can play over those kinds of high-speed, broadband connections. They may be onto something. Apart from his SegaNet connection, Dreamcast owner Chowthuri doesn't subscribe to another Internet service provider at home and hadn't considered signing up for cable-modem or DSL service. But when told of Sega's broadband adapter, he immediately perked up. ``I think it would encourage me to get one,'' he said. Now if only videogame companies could get more people to think the same way. - -- Dexter S. (IMO) > -Eric- While Sony should not have promised 1 million units so early, it should be noted that they are still going to have more units and games available than has ever been available for the launch of any console. This whole deal has been blown completely out of proportion now... As for people wating outside of stores at night....this always happens with the launch of consoles. I doubt many people will actually be waiting outside anyway...the only people who will get them at launch is people who pre-ordered, and they have no need to wait outside. Places like Wal-Mart don't takes reserves, but they are open all night anyway...so again...no one will be outside. Now, there will be people outside at the SE here...but that is because they are opening at midnight. I'm not sure though, but I think we will be allowed into the mall early anyway. When I was at SE today, they told me that there were going to be gaurds at the mall entrance and they would let us in if our name was on the list. So I think that means we will be let into the mall itself before hand. Nintendo may not give you that pleasure. :) If they're going with propriety disks, they may go with smaller cases, but then again, their N64 boxes have always been oversized, so perhaps they wont. it may be cheaper just to go with stock cases since economies of scale will probably make it cheap to buy. - -- Dexter S.
