All you do Brian, and the ONLY reason you ever send out any mail to this list in the first place, is in the hopes to watch your hit count go up. I know it, Dex knows it, and so does this list. So before you attempt to whiplash Dex, you should watch your own behavior first. Had you any interest in really providing fair discussion and input, you would've simply linked us to the source; which was (ad always is) the first authentic break on the story, not your site. Moreover, as far as copying and pasting goes, the NYT article also appeared in the Houston Chronicle verbatim today, with credit due. I would think with what you do, that would notice that other publications do it as well. Two, Brian is right as well (only in part). Just because a company denies it, that doesn't mean it's not going to happen. However, I sincerely doubt it will happen; at least not now. This is Sega's big chance to see where they stand. Once the holiday dust settles, Sega will be able to see how their Dreamcast will do, and if it's on a positive note, it may be enough to keep them in their own for a bit longer or for years to come. And despite noticing a few inaccurate statements in the original article, simply because the rumor is appearing in more widespread publications, it doesn't make it any more true. I do believe there have been talks, but I do not believe that anything has been finalized or closed and that the talks were merely that. For a company like Sega, I think exploring all the alternative options is a wise one, and I think talks of merging with Nintendo is little more than exploring a worst case scenario type deal. That's my (brief) two cents on the subject. Sega responds. Mr. Glenn Kraman Business Desk, The New York Times Mr. Howard French Tokyo Bureau Chief, The New York Times Tokyo Bureau While Sega has always been fond of The New York Times' objective coverage of our company, we would like to express our concern over the fallacy that appeared on 12/27/00 regarding Nintendo's buy out of Sega. Not only did this erroneous allegation cause the trade of Sega's corporate stock to be temporarily suspended while substantially influencing Sega and Nintendo's stock prices, it caused unnecessary confusion among stockholders, affiliated companies, business partners, and end-users of both companies. It also severely damaged Sega's corporate and brand image during a very precarious time in the videogame industry.Although top executives of Sega and Nintendo flatly and completely denied the rumor, The New York Times has published yet another article containing similar content on 12/29/00. Such repeated and arbitrary publication of groundless statements is pure harassment and unacceptable obstruction of our business, which we cannot overlook. We believe that The New York Times as a news organization is heavily responsible for this misinformation.Sega Corporation is requesting that The New York Times immediately run a notification and apology for the fallacious feature in the same scale and manner as the initial article. We expect The New York Times to address this issue in the honorable tradition of a respectable news source by taking the appropriate and responsible measures toward reparations. lol. good job cutting and pasting there.

so dex, you think that because nintendo denied it, it's not going to
happen?

it's hard to hold back the laughter on that one.

a denial by the companies in no way actually confirms that no deal is in
the
works. if you were negotiating with sega to purchase the company, wouldn't
you deny the report too? rumors and speculation and news like this can
destroy talks between companies....so they would obviously deny it.

whether or not the denial is true or not, we will only know that months --
or
perhaps years -- from now.

dont let a "denial" fool you...while there may be no such deal, a denial
means absolutely nothing. the new york times would not print something
without confirmations from multiple sources.

time will tell...

Nintendo in talks to buy Sega? Sega responds.

Mr. Glenn Kraman
Business Desk, The New York Times

Mr. Howard French
Tokyo Bureau Chief, The New York Times Tokyo Bureau

While Sega has always been fond of The New York Times' objective coverage of
our company, we would like to express our concern over the fallacy that
appeared on 12/27/00 regarding Nintendo's buy out of Sega.

Not only did this erroneous allegation cause the trade of Sega's corporate
stock to be temporarily suspended while substantially influencing Sega and
Nintendo's stock prices, it caused unnecessary confusion among stockholders,
affiliated companies, business partners, and end-users of both companies. It
also severely damaged Sega's corporate and brand image during a very
precarious time in the videogame industry.Although top executives of Sega and
Nintendo flatly and completely denied the rumor, The New York Times has
published yet another article containing similar content on 12/29/00. Such
repeated and arbitrary publication of groundless statements is pure
harassment and unacceptable obstruction of our business, which we cannot
overlook.

We believe that The New York Times as a news organization is heavily
responsible for this misinformation.Sega Corporation is requesting that The
New York Times immediately run a notification and apology for the fallacious
feature in the same scale and manner as the initial article. We expect The
New York Times to address this issue in the honorable tradition of a
respectable news source by taking the appropriate and responsible measures
toward reparations.

Sega cautions that, if sincere and swift measures are not taken by The New
York Times concerning this issue, we have no choice but to resort to legal
actions.

Thank you,

Shunichi Nakamura
