I have the demo for 4x4 evolution and while the licensed trucks are cool and look decent, it just wasn't something I was looking to buy. Too bad the network wasn't up and running earlier in the systems life, or games like Virtua Tennis & Powerstone would have definately gotten me online. from the cube.ign.com FAQ: Conexant will build and supply a V90 56k modem as well as a broadband adapter for Gamecube. The modem will work in conjunction with the console to allow platform owners a dial-up connection to an online network where they will presumably be able to trade data and play games. The broadband adapter should allow for users with cable or DSL service to use their high-bandwidth services if they so wish. Nintendo has not announced its Internet strategy, but sources say the strategy is very solid and not something Nintendo has glanced over. "Dolphin will combine Nintendo's world-class design and beloved franchise characters with the expansion of the world of gaming by an online network," said Genyo Takeda, Nintendo's corporate director and general manager of integrated research and development. Or, http://cube.ign.com/news/23894.html Hopefully it will be up and running at or not to long after the system is out. Although I have SEGA.net, I was worried about lag since (thanks to living in an old house) my PC connection speed is 26.4K and my Dreamcast connection speed is 33.6K I thought for the longest time that I'd have problems with online gaming on the Dreamcast since I experienced much lag when playing Midtown Madness (online) on my PC. But then I bought 4x4 Evolution (not the greatest game in the world) and tried racing online. To my surprise I experienced no lag at all. A few days of that and I was jonesing for something more rewarding, so I traded in Final Fantasy 9, 4x4 Evolution, and Ape Escape (I was broke and desperate at the time) for Phantasy Star Online. I play it just about every day now, and you know what? No problems with lag at all. I'm not saying lag is non-existent, it pops up from time to time, but it doesn't disrupt the game since the most of it was in the crowded lobby. During the actual battles & quests it rarely shows up at all, quite different than the herky jerky play of Midtown Madness. And this is all on a 33.6K connection, with SEGA.net helping out too. So if you get a good dial-up speed without SEGA.net, like 45K to 56K (or should I say 53K?) you shouldn't have any real problems. I just wonder if Sony or Nintendo plan on releasing a 56K modem for their systems. SEGA has proved that narrowband is not dead and with proper management it can be effective. I know they both have Broadband adapters in the works, but I don't see broadband coming my way anytime soon. Although if it did I'd subscribe right away, at least for my PC.
