Here are a few highlights from their report: - - GameCube's Rogue Squadron II uses CG models ILM built for the Star Wars Special Edition movies. The original ILM models were not downsized or scaled back. Allowing Rouge Squadron II to have ships that look look exactly like those found in the movie. - -GameCube is expected to come in for less than $200 . XBox is expected to be about $300 - -Nintendo plans to display three dozen (36) GameCube games at E3. I'm assuming that includes games shown on video. Here's the full article: Next week, Nintendo officially unwraps GameCube for the USA at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in Los Angeles. This rare double launch, along with a new wave of PS2 games that will take full advantage of its capabilities, is creating unparalleled anticipation. Analysts predict revenues may jump from $7.5 billion in 2000 to $10 billion this year. "It's a big challenge for us launching all of these systems, but it's great the industry is getting all this attention," says Jeff Griffiths, a senior vice president of the Electronics Boutique chain. Each new generation of systems, from the first Nintendo Entertainment System to the PS2, has delivered more sophisticated graphics and gameplay. This next wave promises to push the envelope further. Nintendo is drawing particularly good buzz. Thanks to the GameCube's graphics-crunching ability, LucasArts developers working on the game Rogue Squadron II were able to digitally insert actual models that Industrial Light & Magic created for the theatrical re-release of Star Wars. In the past, developers had to scale back the ILM models for games; this is the first time that X-wings, AT-AT walkers and other crafts could be re-created to scale and detail. "Believe it or not, it actually looks like the original movie," says LucasArts president Simon Jeffery. Like GameCube, Xbox and PS2 boast processors that rival or exceed the power of those in high-end PCs, and the systems play games on discs that can hold gigabytes of data. The result: unparalleled eye candy, thanks to the systems' abilities to render millions of graphic elements each second. "All of them are strong systems, and they have brought graphics to almost the standards of television," says Nintendo's Peter Main. "The key will be who has the most compelling software." Nintendo and Microsoft will announce specific games for their new systems at next week's Expo. System prices and firmer release plans are expected as well. Industry experts predict that GameCube will sell for less than $200, the Xbox, about $300. Nintendo plans to display about three dozen GameCube games at the show, including longtime Nintendo favorites Mario and Zelda. Next month also marks the launch of the company's Game Boy Advance. The stand-alone handheld game system is designed to connect to the GameCube as a controller as well. "It's a bit of a Trojan horse for us," Main says. - -- Dexter S.
