I agree with Thraxen. The plastic DVD cases are more durable. jewel
cases are a little too stiff, they crack easily.

The only time I
get that problem is when I buy used games or the store copy of a game from
a place like EB. But then I just go buy new jewel cases. With every game
or CD that I have bought new I never have had that problem. It's just some
people don't know how to take proper care of jewel cases. Well,
one nice thing about DVD cases is bigger cover art and more room for screenshots

I do miss the CD Longboxes though.

From what I can remember Sheik was that woman (ninja) who followed
Link around and gave him clues at the end/start of levels.
And eventually evaled her identity.

Subject: [NG] w00tage GameCube/DVD Hybrid Coming to the States
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd said on
Thursday it plans to launch a hybrid version of Nintendo (news - web
sites) Co Ltd's GameCube video game machine in Japan soon after the
console's September launch.
The world's largest consumer electronics maker said it plans to launch
the product, which combines digital audio visual and video game
functions including DVD playback, in the United States some time in the
2002/03 business year.
By offering the multi-purpose gadget, Matsushita aims to compete with
archrival Sony Corp (news - web sites), whose wildly popularly
PlayStation2 (news - web sites) game console that went on sale last year
can play DVD movies.
Nintendo is to launch the next-generation GameCube console on September
14 in Japan, followed by a U.S. release on November 5.
The hybrid machine, packaged in a small silver box, will enable users to
play GameCube games on 3.150 inch compact disks, listen to CDs, and
watch video CDs and DVDs, Matsushita said.
``Our hybrid digital audio visual product will be superior to
PlayStation2,'' said Fumio Otsubo, Matsushita's managing director.
He declined to disclose the product's retail price.
Matsushita, known for its Panasonic and Technics brand goods, is
scheduled to exhibit a prototype of the hybrid game console on May 17 at
the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game industry's annual trade show
in Los Angeles.
Matsushita and Nintendo had agreed in May 1999 on a comprehensive tie-up
for game machines using DVD technology.
Matsushita Electric, which developed the game console's disk drives,
also said it is set to begin manufacturing 600,000 disc drives and 1.5
million discs per month from June.
Shares in Matsushita closed at 2,130 yen, up 2.16 percent, while
Nintendo's shares ended up 2.92 percent at 20,450 yen. They both
outperformed a 1.58 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei average

Subject: [NG] 3Million Cubes by November?
In that press release, you'll see at the very end that Matsushita gave
out some numbers on their disc drive and disc production. It raises some
very interesting scenarios. here's an article i wrote for tendo box
concerning that fact.
- ------------
In their announcement confirming plans to release the GameCube/DVD
player Fusion hybrid in September this Japan and sometime in 2001/2002
in the United States, the company dropped a crucial hint as to how many
GameCubes and GameCube compatible players will be available by November.
Matsushita, which developed the GameCube's disk drives said it is set to
begin manufacturing 600,000 disc drives and 1.5 million discs per month
from June.
Let's do the math. If Matsushita start manufacturing 600,000 disc drives
starting this June, there would be at most 1.8 million GameCube disc
drives by September. Meaning Nintendo could launch with up to 1.8
million GameCubes in Japan. By November, the number of total GameCube
drives would be up to 3 million.
On the disc side of things, at 1.5 million discs per month, we should
expect 7.5 million proprietary GameCube discs by November. That's a lot
of games Nintendo is expecting to sell.
Unkowns at this point that should be pointed out. The 600,000 disc drive
per month given by Matsushita is unclear as to whether it is only
GameCube disc drives or whether the figure also include the
GameCube/DVD/CD compatible drives. We are conservatively assuming
600,000 drives is the total number of drives produced.
Also not known is how many disc drives and discs Matsushita has produced
up to June. They may have already been manufacturing these goods at
lower quantities for some time. And if they indeed have been doing this,
our totals would naturally be much higher. In anycase, even if we assume
we're going into the production cycle with ZERO disc drives for
GameCubes, the numbers we would get by the end of November would be more
than enough to meet initial demand

Finally! Bowser, King of the Koopas! I may have to get Super Smash Bros. =
