I could see a possible argument for that in Zelda (get to that in a sec), but not in Pikmin or Mario. For one, how do we really know that this "real world" setting isn't just one stage, or, for that matter, isn't the Mushroom Kingdom? If we think about this, the Kingdom has undergone numerous changes in appearance over time. In MRPG, it looked almost like a medieval kingdom. In Paper Mario, it looked like a slightly more modern village (not much more, mind you). Besides this, think about some of the other Mario games. In SMB2, he was in Subcon. In SMW, it was Dinosaur World. SMW2 brought us to Yoshi's Island. So, seriously, there have been a number of Mario games that take place outside the Mushroom Kingdom. And, speaking of Sonic Adventure, they did show portions in the Mystic Ruins, right? (with some excellent overworld music, not to mention) With Pikmin, I see Miyamoto exploring uncharted areas. I mean, seriously, casual gamers probably wouldn't give a d*mn, since this is a new franchise. If they don't like it (by that, I mean the look of it), they'll likely pass it over without a second thought. It's just trying new things, which I admire Miyamoto for doing. Speaking of which, we arrive at Zelda. I do understand your reasoning here that a radical change such as this to Nintendo's possibly most well known and beloved series may turn people off and have them think that it's too much of a kiddy thing. This is my biggest fear, and this is, in some places, happening. After the uproar is over, however, I'd say this game has a chance to do well. The same sort of thing happened with the release of screens of Paper Mario. People hated that it didn't have this wonderful 3D look, but it turned out great in the end. Though, I admit, it's not exactly the same as the change to Zelda. Still, I have my hopes. - -Satoshi _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp [ To quit the NGamers mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ NGamers" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 17:55:01 -0400 From: "Dave" Subject: Re: [NG] Mushroom Kingdom This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------=_NextPart_000_0021_01C12D8F.0FE195E0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Lloyd Millard Mccoy Jr.=20 To: Dave=20 Cc: NGamers@lists.xmission.com=20 Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2001 4:11 PM Subject: [NG] Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot (Mario should always be in mushroom kingdom not in real world environments...that's why I didn't like Sonic Adventure)=20 Lloyd - -------------------------------------------------------------------------= - ----- Would you care to tell us what the Mushroom Kingdom really looks like? = It is that flat 2-D place with a few pipes and staircases made from = blocks place?
