This is a lot harder and necessitates a bit of exploration and a little effort, something that most people don't seem to be willing to try. Just another example of the differening styles of US vs UK vs Japanese gaming then? MMmmmm.... I'm currently playing a game called "Silhouette Mirage" on the Saturn, by Treasure ("Go Go Troublemakers!" "Gunstar Heroes"). If it ever got released in the UK, chances are it'd totally crash & burn. 2D platformer with 'weird' Jap graphics, characters + events. And immensely playable with some very unique ideas + play ideas. Shame next to noone in the West will get to enjoy it unless the rumoured PSX release happens. Yoshi's Story is different. There are only two ways to play it: boring/easy and boring/frustrating. Levels can take about 20 minutes to complete, so replaying for high scores is very frustrating. And there is little incentive to do so. There are no bonus levels or extra ending or anything. There is a "secret message" you can spell out by finding letters in each of the levels, but I've spelled it, and I can tell you, it is a very lame message. All you can do is, replay the levels for a better score. Unlike most score oriented games, where you can always improve on your score ( eg tetris ), in YS you can't because there is a limited amount of items to collect on each level. Some of the levels are actually fun, but most of them are boring or un-forgivingly frustrating. There is even an annoying tongue glitch in the water levels which makes it easy to accidently eat the wrong fruits, screwing up your score. Graphics wise, it isn't that impressive. Considering what the N64 can do, it's quite disappointing. There are no polygonal backgrounds, barely even any parallax-scrolling. Admittedly this is only the second 2d platformer on the system. Some of levels are quite nice looking and very colourful, and there is also loads of sprite rotation in the game which is flawless and very subtle. And there's a very nice looking reflection effect on the jungle water level. The music and sound pretty good, however, every level in the game has the same repetitive musical theme. Imagine the same midi file played over and over with different instruments, that's what it's like. Oh and I think the snow level music is a remix from a previous mario game, maybe SMB3? Yeah so to conclude my review :), Yoshi's Story is very disappointing, especially for a NCL game, and a sequel to the greatest 2d platformer of all time. It's not complete crap though... so I'd give a 5/10. >Example? Final Fantasy 7. It's easy to jump right through it, get a really >low total time. But you've missed *tons* of side quests, tons of extras >that enrich the world of the game. > I agree with you. Too many people don't take the time to appreciate the subtleties of games. I'm not just bitching about YS because I'm crap at it, I usually take the time to find everything in a game (the platinum medals in Blast Corps, all the Goldeneye codes, all SM64's stars etc.). >Brian @ DMA > >[ All opinions & views are my own, not DMA's, yadda, yadda, yadda ] > alexh@ivanhoe.starway.net.au [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: 28 Apr 98 07:09am CDT From: ZINSD@gencas.com (Dave Zins) Subject: [N64] Reply to Re: N64 Stop: Thie *** Original Author: TIPPYMAN@INTERNET - Remote Mailer; 04/27/98 11:00pm > As for the >PSuX, I would never soil my fingers with the likes of that console..... Drive the train all the way to the end of the track, get out, go across the bridge. Get into the bulldozer and destroy the small building. Drive the bulldozer onto the crane. Get out of the bull dozer and get into the crane. Use the crane to move the dozer onto the other side of the track. Go back across the bridge and get into the the dozer. Use the dozer to push the crate of TNT - which is sitting on the train - across the track and into the big building. This will destroy the big building. After you get golds on every level on BC, you get the bonus levels. After you get golds on all of them, you get to play time attack and redo all the levels for a faster time. After you get gold time attack medals on every level you can try for platinium medals. To make it past the first three guys without losing health is extremely hard much less making it through the entire level. With 200% e. health you can't kill the first guy with a head shot- it now takes two or three!! If anyone has this code please email me. Thanks. My god, some people still actually believe this? EGM played a little April Fools joke and it got way out of hand. Anyway, no, this code is fake.
