Swarthout" Subject: [N64] News from MSNBC SHOPPERS NEARLY RIOTED when retailers ran out of systems, a fast-food chain sold Mario 64 milkshakes, and a Japanese television station began broadcasting an N64 game show. But the euphoria ran out as Nintendo waited months before releasing new games for the system. N64's U.S. launch followed the same pattern. Having originally decided to ship fewer than 1 million units to the United States, Nintendo changed its plans due to unprecedented consumer response. In the end, Nintendo plundered units earmarked for Europe to meet American demand. (This decision offended many European retailers and gamers, leaving Nintendo in a bad position when it finally made its European launch.) After the holidays, however, as the long wait for the next blockbuster game began, Sony regained its lead in monthly sales. Sony increased its lead over Nintendo last Christmas both in software and hardware sales. With hits such as "Final Fantasy VII" in its line-up, Sony sold more than 18.4 units of software in the fourth quarter of 1997. To date, Nintendo has sold approximately 8 million N64s in the United States, compared with Sony’s 12 million PlayStations. This year, however, Nintendo should be able to regain ground on Sony based on two products — "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" for the Nintendo 64 and the Game Boy Color handheld game system. "Our hope is that we will sell 2 million 'Zelda' cartridges in the United States between the November 23rd launch and Christmas," says Nintendo of America chairman Howard Lincoln. "If not by Christmas, then by the end of the year." "We’re launching a nationwide pre-sell program in which you can get a gold "Zelda" cartridge if you go through participating retailers." Not all of Nintendo’s hopes are tied to "The Legend of Zelda," however. "We're very bullish about N64," says Lincoln. "We have what is probably the strongest lineup of both first- and third-party software we've ever had, including games like 'F-Zero X,' 'Zelda,' 'Rogue Squadron' and games from third-party publishers like 'Turok 2' and whatnot." "There will be over 100 N64 titles in the marketplace by Christmas, so that gives a pretty nice wide variety of games including some very strong sports titles from Electronic Arts, Acclaim, and Midway." Sports has always been Nintendo's weak suit. Supported by Electronic Arts, Sega established the Genesis as the best platform for sports games during the 16-bit generation of game hardware, and the PlayStation has emerged as the platform for sports simulations in recent years. With strong versions of "Madden Football" from Electronic Arts, "Quarterback Club" from Acclaim and "NFL Blitz" from Midway, N64 is more competitive in football than it was last year. There are also excellent soccer, snowboarding and baseball titles for the console. One item that will not be available will be the DD64, a Zip drive-like peripheral that would have greatly expanded the power of the N64 by giving it greater storage capacity, a writeable medium and possibly a modem. The DD64, which was supposed to be released this year, now appears to have slipped from Nintendo’s agenda. "We demonstrated DD64, I believe it was in early 1997, at a trade show in Japan. At the time that we did it, we were concerned about the cost of manufacturing the cartridges, and, especially the cost of high-memory cartridges," explains Lincoln. "One of the principal reasons for DD64 was to get around that problem from a competitive standpoint. We also saw in DD64 something unusual in that the product was writeable. "Since then, a couple of things have happened. The memory capacity of Nintendo 64 cartridges has gone up from 64 megabits to 256 megabits for 'Zelda' and 'Turok 2.'" (Megabits are one-eighth the size of megabytes, so a 256-megabit cartridge holds 32 megabytes of data, as opposed to CDs, which hold 640 megabytes.) "At the same time, the manufacturing costs of these high-memory cartridges have come down, reducing the retail price of N64 software. We have software that is anywhere from $39 to $49 at retail. So the need for DD64 to answer the cost of memory in cartridges has gone away. "We have no plans to introduce DD64 in 1998 and probably not in 1999," says Lincoln. "Our parent company will introduce the product most likely in June of next year. The markets are different, and some of the software that would be appealing to the Japanese market is not something that we would use to launch the product here in the United States. Quite frankly, given the falling prices of N64 cartridges and the lack of killer software for DD64, it would not be appropriate to launch the product at this time." But N64 is not the only game system in Nintendo's arsenal. After 10 years, Game Boy is more popular than ever. "In the Game Boy category, of course, the big news is the launch of Game Boy Color on November 23rd. We’re getting some tremendous support from our third-party publishers on Game Boy Color titles. There will be at least 10 or more third-party Game Boy Game Boy Color titles available at launch as well as five or six first-party titles from Nintendo," says Lincoln. According to Lincoln, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Game Boy Color units in the United States and a total of 3 million worldwide by the end of the year. There's even more news on the Game Boy front — "Pokemon." "Pokemon" is a role-playing game in which players collect and train tiny monsters. The game became a social phenomenon in Japan, resulting in a $4 billion merchandising industry. "Pokemon" monsters have been immortalized in toys, snack foods, clothing and more. "We've started the television series [in the United States]," explains Lincoln. "We sent out a million videotapes to consumers telling them all about 'Pokemon' in August. The Game Boy titles were launched last September 27th here in North America. Hasbro will introduce the toy line in November along with the huge promotional campaign by KFC (formerly Kentucky Fried Chicken), and we'll introduce a little pedometer 'Pokemon' Pikachu [toys] in early November." According to Lincoln, "Pokemon" is breaking all existing Game Boy sales records. "The sell-through so far, and it's just a week old, is very, very strong. Some retailers are already reporting shortages and have placed substantial reorders. "We hope to have a hit on our hands and repeat the monster success that occurred in Japan." With the revitalized Game Boy and an impending hit for the N64, Lincoln is reasonably confident that Nintendo will have strong holiday sales. "I think we can be first in sales. Somebody called 'The Legend of Zelda' the "’Gone with the Wind' of video games.’" If we can't move hardware with 'Gone with the Wind,' I don’t know what we're going to do." Um. *You* may not consider yourself a "kiddie" whereas other people may do. It's all about perceptions. It's all about maturity of the games released for the market each machine is percieved to have. The N64 is *perceived* to have more games aimed at a younger audience than the Playstation has. They both probably have about the same number of games of this type - unfortunately because the N64 has a smaller library of games, this makes the percentage of games out there aimed at a younger audience much more.
