I always look forward to November. Expecially this one, I have been game-less for a while. I just rented three games, and I have some nice opinions on them. Crus'n World. I found this right from the start nicer, I liked the newer interface. I first went into practice, and the first thing I noticed was that it was smoother. Upon closer look, and after playing for around 30 minutes of practice in the different levels, I found that the terrain was much smoother, and was also filtered more. It looked better. But I also noticed that the sprites were just as jerky, and annoying, and low resolution. The levels were better also. I went into the normal game mode, and boy, the slowdown was very apparant. The other cars made a big difference. It went very slow. After many races, I felt very tired and bored even. It lacked something. It felt empty. The frame rate was not annoying, that was not the right word. It was in a way painful. I couldnt stand it. Frustrating, that is what it was. I then went to the tournament mode. One thing I realized through the game was that the car seemed to go very slow. I wasnt going anywhere it seemed! But, once you complete a level in tournament mode, you get upgraded, and the car goes faster the next race. The next race, I was much more pleased. I was going much faster, and it was interesting. Imagine how fast I could go after 8 levels! Imagine how fast I could go if I kept playing. Well, once I started to like the game it was time to go. I must get back to everyone on this, perhaps the one element that made the Cruis'n series famous in arcades, the competition, is still there. I liked the new car moves. FZeroX. Excellent! I loved this. The frame rate is smooth, oh so very smooth. Lots of cars to choose from, lots of great fun levels, and a lot of speed. I felt very uptight while playing, it was a lot of fun. I have been a fan of the original Fzero, and the music, original cars, and levels were very nostalgic. I love the game, and I will wind up buying it. I really got into it. I picked up on the speed right away, and control is tight (AND configurable). The differences between the cars is nice, you have a lot of room to decide how you want to ride the best. Death race was nice, and I couldnt wait to play it multiplayer, and I was disapointed, a lot. That would have been very neat. It just seems so easy and boring without other people, the cpus dont try at all. (Seriously, they dont, they just drive while you try to kill them.) Multiplayer was a lot of fun still. It is tight and tense. A race to the finish line, just trying to stay on track and in control the whole time. The frame rate in multiplayer is just as smoothe and fast. I just wish I could play death race in multiplayer. Silicon Valley. I have not played much of this game, not at all. I have only had them for 3 hours or so. I dont feel like saying any review yet, but I must say that it was funny and clever. I got up to a bear that walked in such a drop dead funny way. Plop plop plop... I like it so far. If anyone here runs an n64 fansite with reader reviews, feel free to use these if they are what you want. - -Cho ICQ UIN: 93630 tocher@portjeff.net [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Nov 1998 20:16:39 -0600 From: D Fentie Subject: Re: [N64] Sound yeah, I own F-zero X but I wish there was a way that I could 'boost' up the sound and lower the racing sounds (vroooooom, swiiiiiiiishhhhh) you know, those type of sounds. But yes, I know. In fact, I was thinking about this earlier today in school when I should have been doing lab work.. I notice that if the music is slightly lower, it does not get enough emphasis, and you dont get into the music. If it is slightly higher, you just concentrate on the music. When you listen to a song, on a CD for instance, you concentrate on the CD. It is hard to balance the sound so you get into the music, yet the game at the same time. I believe that equivalent volumes is the key, although we have a tendency to want ot alter the volumes so we for some reason feel better. I guess so, but you can't argue with money. Use the TV out. Sure, the resolution drops to 640x480, but that is still high, and you get all those nice other PC touches. It depends really. Quake is a PC game. You cant have as much fun with 4 people on a couch as you can with 4 people online, plus the fact that you can go up to 64 people. But as for the sports games, I am sure that you can play them online as well, and if so then there shouldnt be a problem. One, games like Quake are much different than sports games, so they are a different story. Second, i completely disagree with the 4-player thing. I think having 4 friends YOU ACTUALLY KNOW is far and away better than 4 faceless (barring a local PC network of course) foes who might as well be CPU players.
