Speculation regarding the release of Nintendo's GB Pak has run rampant ever since Pokemon Stadium -- the game it was scheduled to ship with -- got pushed back to next year. With Rare's Mature-rated GB Pak compatible Perfect Dark scheduled for release this December, the question on everyone's mind has been, when will the GB Pak be available? Nintendo's Ken Lobb answered the question once and for all last week via Nintendo's online Camp Hyrule update. The outspoken Nintendo man commented, "The GB Pak will be available when Perfect Dark's out." By Nintendo release lists, that means December. Using the GB Pak, Perfect Dark owners will be able to take photos of themselves (and others) and map the images onto their character's face in the game. The deathmatching possibilities are delicious. ============================= Be sure to patronize Ultra Game Players at: http://www.ultragp.com/ [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 17:17:29 -0400 From: "Eddy Wu" Subject: [N64] New Nintendo video Hey, I got a new video from Nintendo today. SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 24, 1999-- Feature Film Quality Animated Spots Created Using Actual Sega Dreamcast Hardware Sega(R) of America today revealed the launch advertising campaign for the much-anticipated launch of Sega Dreamcast(TM), the superconsole with a built-in 56K modem that will bring the most-advanced and realistic video gameplay ever developed to consumers at its retail launch on September 9, 1999. The campaign was created by Pacific Data Images, the creators of the award-winning animated feature film, Antz, under the direction of Foote, Cone & Belding, San Francisco. Utilizing models and assets straight from the Sega Dreamcast hardware and software, the spots feature Sega's beloved mascot Sonic the Hedgehog(TM), more than forty 1st and 3rd party game characters and live-action and animated appearances by a range of NFL and NBA stars including Gary Payton, Penny Hardaway, Brian Grant, Allen Iverson and Randy Moss. Part of a $100 million launch marketing blitz, the campaign will break on August 30 and will air on more than nine networks. Sega collaborated with PDI to create two-square-miles of fully animated 3-D environments that are the backdrop for each of the five executions, which feature live-action integration of digital game characters and NBA and NFL stars. "Sega Dreamcast completely immerses players in a world that looks and feels so authentic, it blurs the lines between reality and game play and we wanted to replicate that breakthrough experience in our television advertising," said Peter Moore, senior vice president, Sega of America. "No other videogame console could take this bold approach because never before has there been a system with the technical capability to produce graphics of such a quality that they could be the focus of an entire 60-second broadcast spot." "These spots are a true testament to the awesome quality of the Sega Dreamcast system -- what viewers see in these television ads is what they'll see when playing Sega Dreamcast," continued Moore. Titled "In the Box," the series is the final phase of broadcast advertising for the Sega Dreamcast launch following a trio of 15-second teaser spots and the action-packed 60-second mini-movie "Apocalypse," which began airing nationwide as part of a teaser campaign earlier this summer. "In the Box" continues Sega's positioning of the "It's Thinking" tag line which refers to the technology engine inside Sega Dreamcast that can respond to and outsmart its human opponents. Each of the "In The Box" ads take viewers into the Sega Dreamcast world where characters from games live when they are not playing against their human opponents. In the humorous spots, viewers see Sega Dreamcast game characters work out, eat dinner, attend rave parties and advise one another on how to beat their human competition. Spots include: - -- "Opening Day:" Introduces the immense living and conspiring world inside the Sega Dreamcast console and features more than 40 game characters including an animated Brian Grant of the Portland Trailblazers. - -- "Old Days:" Jim McMahon, former quarterback of the Chicago Bears, rants to Randy Moss of the Minnesota Vikings about what a privilege it is to be part of the Sega Dreamcast system versus when he appeared in Sega Genesis(TM) games in the `80s. In the background, more than 10 digital game characters and NFL stars are interacting at a Sega Dreamcast cantina. - -- "Daydream:" Gary Payton of the Seattle Supersonics raps with Taka, a character from the well-known "Virtua Fighter"(TM) series and features Sonic the Hedgehog as a DJ mixing for more than 40 other characters on the dance floor. - -- "Sumo:" Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers seeks basketball playing advice from Taka of "Virtua Fighter3tb"(TM) and then applies it to his posting technique in "NBA 2K," a Sega Dreamcast basketball game, against "live" Penny Hardaway of the Orlando Magic, Juwan Howard of the Washington Wizards and Brian Grant of the Portland Trailblazers. - -- "Drive In:" Jamal Anderson of the Atlanta Falcons interacts with more than 20 characters watching a movie of Sega Dreamcast game footage. The spots will rotate on nine different cable networks including MTV, FOX, WB, UPN, ESPN, USA, World Wrestling Federation/20th Century/Columbia syndication, ZDTV and The Box. On August 30, "Opening Day" will air. "Old Days" and "Daydream" will air during the MTV Video Music Awards on September 9th, along with a new 90-second version of "Apocalypse." "Opening Day" will also be available for download as of August 30th on www.sega.com. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. This time the video features two of the three big Rare games coming this holiday season, Jet Force Gemini and Donkey Kong 64. Taking the form of a news program hosted by a guy named Steve who has a tendency towards exaggerated facial expressions and breathless spewing of Nintendo marketing hype, "Hot Newz 64" contained three short segments of Ask Dan, of Nintendo Power Source fame, and of course the game footage. Roughly three and a half minutes of Jet Force Gemini was shown, about half gameplay and half cinema, including what appeared to be the intro cinematic inspired by Star Wars Episode 1 and Star Trek. The gameplay footage consisted of demos of the two shooting perspectives (running mode, lacking an aim, and targeting mode, wher you stand still and your character becomes transparent, but you get an aiming cursor.). Many varied environments were shown off, as well as quite a few huge insectoid bosses. The multiplayer modes also made an appearance, in both 2 and 4 player variations. According to the narrator, JFG features more than 2 hours of cinematic and 120 stages. The release date they announced was October 13. The other major portion of the video consisted of Donkey Kong 64 footage. Lasting about three minutes, the video showed off the expansion pack enhanced graphics, and the many stages, including several mine cart levels, Diddy flying through some rings with a rocket pack on his back, as well as a few boss battles, which seem to consist of you picking up an explosive barrel in the middle of the stage and hurling it at the enormous boss to damage him. Footage of all five characters (Donkey, Diddy, Tiny, Lanky, and Chunky) was shown, and the narrator promised over 200 objectives and 100 moves. Some of the mini-games were also on display, including a fly-swatting game, barrel-blasting, and boat and car racing. A brief shot of the beloved animal crates from the SNES games showed a 3D Enguarde the Swordfish in an underwater level. The announced release date was November 24. Afterwards a commercial for the computer-generated movie "Donkey Kong Country: Legend of the Crystal Coconut", a straight-to-video feature from Paramount coming in November, was run. After the main portion of the video, short clips of other N64 titles were displayed, interspersed with parts of Nintendo ads. These games were: The New Tetris, Mario Golf, Starcraft 64, NBA Courtside 2, Pokemon Snap, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, Rayman 2, Gauntlet Legends, Armorines, World Driver Championship, Shadowman, 40 Winks, Toy Story 2, NFL Blitz 2000, WWF Attitude, Hybrid Heaven, Hydro Thunder, Nuclear Strike, and Re-Volt. I found last year's to be incredibly fun, but was holding out for the 2k version with 4-player support. If not Blitz then it will either be a cheap copy of Super Smash Bros. or I'll wait for JFG. On a different note, is anyone else besides me happy enough with their N64/PSX to not purchase a DC? I still haven't beaten most of my games and the N64's fall/winter lineup has a lot of games I'm consider buying. Even into 2000 there is pretty many games I'm looking forward to (Super Smash Bros. 2, Zelda Gaiden, Excitebike, Perfect Dark, if it gets delayed which I'm worried that it will and some more). And then hopefully by the fall Dolphin will be out, although I'm not gonna be holding my breath. We all know how Nintendo is with getting their systems out on time.. One thing that is keepin me busy right now is Baulder's Gate, what a good game :) There's so many different paths to take and the graphics are FREEKING AWESOME! And boy is it long, I mean, 5 CD's and about 140 or more hours of gameplay?!!?! It will definately keep me busy for a LOOOONNNGGGG time as well as beyond due to its emmense diversity. Let me just explain a few things about it for those of you who are clueless. Baulder's gate is an RPG based entirely on a dungeons and dragons type set up all in real-time. You decide from 9 types of beliefs which type of person you are, what your race is (elf, human, gnome, etc etc etc........) what your specialty is (fighter, druid, mage (8 types)...) To mix things up more there are multiclassed people and all your attributes are taken into your hands as well (dexterity, charm etc.). Your party has a reputation which you must uphold depending on your belifs. The whole game is non-linear and you can do WHATEVER you want. Even kill a person who is crucial to your success. The game has random weather, ambushes, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people to interact with, LOTS of music, speech and the most realistic sounds anywhere. It even takes into effect how many people are in your group, what type of clothing/armor you are wearing and makes according sounds when you walk. Why, just today my band of people in the game got mad at each other and attacked each other because of their differing outlooks on life. In conclusion, I would just like to say that this game is another reason why PC RPG's are still the best and I am a little too excited about this game :) TreyDX@aol.com wrote: > > In a message dated 8/23/99 2:02:38 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > atcope@comp.uark.edu writes: > > > Well, I might get Rayman 2 for the N64...but there's a good chance I will > > hold out for the DC version.
