IV. Computing Environment A. Network MTC has offices at two locations connected by a T-1 line. About 80 staff members work at the main office at MetroCenter and 40 a mile away at 1999 Harrison Street. At MetroCenter we have a mixture of Netware 5 and Netware 3.2 running on 10 Mbit switched Ethernet, soon to be replaced by 10/100 Mbit. At the Harrison office we are running Novell Netware 5 on a10/100 Mbit switched Ethernet network. There are four Netware 5, two Netware 3.12 and one NT4 servers at MetroCenter. Three of the NW 5 servers are Compaq Proliant 1600 350s with 256 or 384 Mbytes memory and 18.2 Gbytes of fully duplexed disk space: the main file and print server; the BorderManager fire-wall and the Groupwise server. The fourth NW 5 server is a Gateway 350 running Veritas Backup Exec. The two NW 3.12 servers run applications that can not run in NW 5: our current email scheduling systems, Pegasus Mail and Meeting Maker, that will shortly be replaced by Groupwise, run on an HP LC II 266 with 9.1 Gbytes mirrored disk space; the Platinum accounting and Ceridian payroll/HR systems run on a similar server with 4 Gbytes disk space. The Platinum server is accessible only by the accounting and administrative services staffs. The NT server is a Dell 450 dual processor with 36 Gbytes of RAID running MS Terminal Server to present ESRI GIS applications to work with the Thomas Bros digital map of the Bay Area. At Harrison Street the main file and print server and the backup server are duplicated. The MTC network is connected to the Internet through a T-1, which is shared with ABAG, another agency at MetroCenter. B. Workstations Windows PCs There are 120 Gateway 2000 PCs on the network ranging from Pentium 75s (with 200 MHz upgrade chips) with 1 Gbyte drives to Pentium III 450s with 10 Gbyte drives. Low end PCs are being replaced so that by the end of FY99-2000 the low end computers will be Pentium 133s. The standard operating system is Windows 95b. The Accounting section is the exception where eight users have Windows NT 4 workstation. The operating system and standard software resides on each workstation hard drive. All have: Windows 95 or NT, MS Office 2000, Mijenix PowerDesk; Netscape Navigator; Shiva LANrover Dial Out; McAfee Virus Checker; Adobe Acrobat Reader; the Meeting Maker client software and the Groupwise client. Other local software includes: the Terminal Server client for users of the GIS system; transportation planning software (minUTP, Viper, Logit & TP+) for the modeling group and TextPad, SAS & MapInfo clients for modeling & several other users. Macintoshes There are 11 Macs (5 G-4, 1 G-3, 5 iMac) used by the Public Information and Graphics sections. The Macintoshes use Mac OS 8.6 and 9; all have MS Office 98. The Graphics Section has a complete array of graphics and desktop publishing software. Other Also on the network, but not directly accessible to users, are two Sun workstations running Solaris for the Transit Information website and the MTC Library catalog and website. NUI Partner NetVision Receives Glowing Praise in NetWare Connection Magazine In March we introduced you NetVision, an NUI partner that is on the cutting-edge of product and solution development in the area of directory and server security. Their products, Synchronicity and Directory Alert, offer administrators real-time feedback on what is going on with their network and directory. Over 1000 NUI members responded to that initial introduction (which included an independent article/survey from the Computer Security Institute on the problems associated with network and directory security http://www.gocsi.com/prelea_000321.htm) by downloading NetVision's no-charge evaluation software at http://www.netvision.com. Now, Sandy Stevens (who is coauthor of Novell's Guide to Integrating NetWare 5 and NT, Novell's Guide to NetWare Printing, and Novell's Guide to BorderManager) has written an article for NetWare Connection Magazine that all networking professionals who are responsible for the security of their organization's directory should read. In the article she addresses the need for a specialized product like Directory Alert and then goes on to rave about what a success DA is. Find out why the folks at NetVision are known as The Directory Architects. Check it out at http://www.nwconnection.com/2000_07/alert70/index.html. And Finally...... We would like to announce the coming of the NUI website. The new site will be the home of the NUI Virtual Community. Community members can expect to find newly added benefits and resources such as subject-specific technical forums, an internal NUI job bank (to complement our Career Resource Center), lifetime email, up to date news and articles from industry leaders like Network World Fusion and much more. Look for updates in the coming month!
