It would obviously involve a small charge, but with multi-camcorders (head cams on band members perhaps?), and soundboard quality sound I think that it would be worth it. Groovetech sound hopeful, so stay on the lookout. 3) BURNT OFFERING: In reply to a question someone asked me about my recent Orb teatime remix (1/11/01): "Burnt Offering to the mighty Orb" I just want to say to them that (in good orblivion style), the end is not always what it seems, eg: FFWD to the the last note! cheers bill # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Mark Weston" Subject: (orb) Flying High Orb Massive Date: 01 Nov 2001 22:45:54 -0000 The Irresistible Force Cd Flying High came out in 1994 on Rising High Records RSN CD5.On the sleeve notes it says with the help of...Orb Massive..The Good Dr Alex. There is an extensive article in the book accompanying Trance Europe Express 4, covering the whole Codpiece / Cocksville USA / Occidental thang. It is quite interesting; I highly recommend tracking it down. The short story on Codpiece / Cocksville USA / Occidental is that they are all variants/remixes of the same track, which the demo mp3s make clear. Hmmmmmm...... i've tried to post stuff about this about 50 times, but it never goes through for some reason... anyway, i would guess that avex trax (the label ayumi hamasaki belongs to) probably didn't want them streaming the audio for BOB2; as they tend to be pretty finicky about what places are allowed to play their music online... also, i believe on 12/12 a cd single of sorts will be released in japan featuring "ayu-mi-x iii excerpts" which include both an orb remix (an extended version of the mix found on the "non-stop megamix" of ayu-mi-x iii) and mad professor..overall the other mixes i've heard (from the vinyl release) sound like good stuff and definitely worth 12 or 13 bux.. cdjapan . co . jp is a pretty good place to pick stuff like this up.. hopefully this actually makes it to the list. yay. matt. Date: 28 Nov 2001 12:02:58 +0100 Dear Music Friends, As some of you may have noticed, downloading from and uploading to the CR ftp has been a real pain lately. The reason for this is a very unwilling hard disc. This morning a colleague of mine advised me to save the mp3s in another place, but of course the hard disc had to crash in the process... :-< ..! I have been able to save most fsol boots / live shows, but not all of them. I've decided to restart the ftp site on my own computer. The advantage of this is that I can leave it on all the time, so there'll be no more restricted opening hours. A serious disadvantage is the fact that the space available is rather limited (appr. 2.5 Gb). This means that I'll will have to be more picky about what to put there. Poor quality boots and/or live shows (according to my own -very subjective- taste, of course) will not return on the new site. Also, the 'mp3 residence time' will have to be much shorter, meaning that they will be replaced quicker than in the past. As soon as the new site is up and running I'll let you know. Hopefully someone can also fill me in then about which fsol shows / boots we're still missing... I've been hesitant to send it because it sounds "harsh," but I've decided that to be extra-lenient with BadOrb out of some kind of LX hero worship is just stupid and doesn't do anyone any good, least of all we who are spending mad $$ on the records. Having said that... OK, so BOB5 showed up in the mail yesterday, which prompted several thoughts... SHIPPING The order I got was for a "double" or extra copy I ordered well after BOB5 had first become available (just under the deadline, IIRC). Note that it showed up first (yesterday), and my subscription copy hasn't shown up yet. This (unfortunately) jibes with my experience with the first four BOBs: that I, as a charter subscriber, seem to get my subscription BOBs dead last as opposed to first, as one might reasonably expect. And "dead last" isn't much of an exaggeration, either, if you'll note that I was reading about people getting their BOB4/4.5 packages for literally three weeks or more before mine showed up. (UPDATE: Since composing this message, I've read of others on the list who still haven't gotten their BOB4 packages, so I guess I'm not dead last after all.) RPM The rule of thumb I'd used *until* this latest release was that any BOB side with only one track plays at 45RPM while sides with two tracks and up play at 33RPM. This *seemed* to work fine for the first four BOBs. BOB5, however, has only one track per side, and both the streamed samples at badorb.com and the included track in LX's BadOrb Promo Mix would seem to suggest that both sides play at 33RPM. I don't know if it's because of the length of the tracks, or if I've been playing my Ayumi mixes too fast or what. I mean, "Biometric Electro Rhythms" (on BOB3) *does* play at 45, doesn't it...? STICKERS / A or B? BOB5 has cast a shadow of doubt onto another assumption I'd made with all the other releases: that the "eyeball" sticker was always the A-side. Again, this seemed to carry through the first four BOBs, but the track included in LX's BadOrb Promo Mix is identified as "Puffin' in Paradise," which is on the non-eyeball side of the disc and identified on the Certificate of Orbthenticity as the A-side. Personally, I think the track was mis-labeled on the Promo Mix, as it's the eyeball side that really *sounds* like it's named "Puffin' in Paradise" (to my ears, at least), while the Promo Mix track *sounds* more like "Tokyo Invaders." Anyone agree/disagree? TOGs My package of the first three TOGs (from my subscription order) *finally* showed up a few weeks ago, but unfortunately arrived in size XL whereas I'd ordered Medium. When I contacted Garphoo (or Khamonn, or whoever-the-fuck), it first of all took three or four tries (cc:ed to WorldPay) before I got a response, and even then the response was that I should ship the XL TOGs back at *my* expense and that *then* they'd ship out Medium-size replacements and find some way to reimburse me for the shipping. I sent them back about two weeks ago (at approx. $12USD cost). They should've received them by now. I keep sending the same email every few days saying I've shipped them back and still haven't gotten a reply. I've also been practically begging for some assurance that TOGs 4 and up (TOG4 (naturally) didn't ship with BOB4) would arrive in size Medium as I ordered, but haven't gotten any reply to that, either. (UPDATE: A week later and I still haven't heard a peep.) All in all, I'm a huge fan of the "concept" of this label and have been a huge supporter in terms of ordering multiple copies of the releases, playing them out, playing them on the radio etc., but I nevertheless think that the execution and follow-through in terms of how the label's being run day-to-day (both general fulfillment and customer service response (or lack thereof)) leave a lot to be desired. Yet another problem is the huge lag between when they take your money (i.e., charge your credit card) and when you receive your product: if I'm not mistaken, a friend told me that his card had already been charged for BOBs 6 and 7, while my BOB5 just showed up in the mail yesterday... Anyone have any similar experiences to share, or at least any thoughts on the RPM/sticker issues? I'd love to hear from you... JG PS - Should I worry about posting this because someone in Gardonia might be lurking on the list? Is Garphoo delaying/sabotaging my orders because I have the nerve, having sunk a few hundred dollars into this enterprise, to expect decent fulfillment and customer service? Now that's paranoia... They *just* started using printed address labels on Bob5; I can't imagine how much time they wasted hand-writing a few thousand addresses. (Not to mention how many packages were lost or late due to sloppy writing.) And the packaging they use is crap. It is only through sheer luck that I haven't had a Bob mangled or destroyed yet; when it happens (not if), I *will* be getting a replacement. I'd gladly pay an extra pound or two per shipment for proper packaging (of course, since I got a subscription I am getting a deal on shipping, as BadOrb's crappy shopping cart couldn't work out the "proper" shipping...but I consider that a fair trade for letting them use my money for a year...) > RPM Thankfully, for everything except Bob2, we have the RA from BadOrb (and the mp3s) for comparison...I don't recall "Biometric Electro Rhythms" offhand (I'll check at home tonight), but the mp3 is 7:26. BTW, does anyone with a non-mp3-sourced copy of the BadOrb Promo mix want to do a CD-R trade? Same goes for the two-disc Cydonia pre-release... > TOGs Haven't bought any Togs; I certainly fall into the "fat bastard", extortionately-priced sizes, and I've pretty much stopped wearing band t-shirts in my old age (plus I haven't found any of the designs all that compelling). But, the consensus here seems to be that the service on Togs is significantly worse even than the service for Bobs...so even I was interested, I'd probably give it a miss. > All in all, I'm a huge fan of the "concept" of this label and have been a > huge supporter in terms of ordering multiple copies of the releases, playing > them out, playing them on the radio etc., but I nevertheless think that the > execution and follow-through in terms of how the label's being run > day-to-day (both general fulfillment and customer service response (or lack > thereof)) leave a lot to be desired. Completely agreed. (Except for the multiple copies, playing out, and radio play bits, although IIRC, Jason Bentley has played at least one or two BadOrb releases on Metropolis here in LA.) > Yet another problem is the huge lag between when they take your money (i.e., > charge your credit card) and when you receive your product: if I'm not > mistaken, a friend told me that his card had already been charged for BOBs 6 > and 7, while my BOB5 just showed up in the mail yesterday... In the US at least, Visa and MC policy is that your card isn't supposed to be charged until the goods are shipped; I don't know if that is a worldwide policy, though. (And it wouldn't apply to subscriptions in any case.) My guess would be that sooner or later people are going to get fed up, and start charging back, which should cause a shitstorm between BadOrb and WorldPay, if enough people do it. > Anyone have any similar experiences to share, or at least any thoughts on > the RPM/sticker issues? I'd love to hear from you... As an additional point, I'm beginning to suspect that the mp3s are being made from the vinyl, rather than from the original sources. If you listen closely, you can hear a bit of vinyl crackle and the occasional small pop. Not really how they should be doing it; seems a bit too casual for me, especially at over $3 a pop. So to speak. ;P > PS - Should I worry about posting this because someone in Gardonia might be > lurking on the list? BOB 3 or 4), one of the tracks run long and you can hear the beginning of the next track from the vinyl starting before it is cut off. I also recall one of the MP3s starting abruptly as though the beginning may have been clipped a bit. As for the rest, I still don't have BOB4 or higher, and also spent $15 to return the first 3 TOGs, which were sent in the wrong size of XXXL !! Also did anyone notice on the BOB8 mp3 site, there is no BOB 8a, just b, c and d ? Another point, on the BOB7 MP3 letter of Orbthenticity, they say BOB7 at the top and then say BOB6 twice below in the body of the letter. This happened on a previous MP3 certificate as well. I guess all these flubs make them REAL collectors items. Well, everything except the BadOrb Promo Mix agrees that the Eye side is Puffin' In Paradise, so it looks like the Promo Mix tracklisting is incorrect. How much hassle can it be to just stick in a couple of 12" x 12" pieces of strong cardboard. Its not as though we're hardly getting charged anything for packaging. I paid £4.00 uk for these records to be sent to me and the stamps on my extremely bashed thick paper envelope add up to £1.58. Now, for those of you who never quite grasped arithmatic, thats £2.42 more, and wheres that going? It definelety isn't going to the cost of the shitty packaging. Argh. This whole lack of information >thing is getting less and less endearing... Dance Music in general has been screwing with us for years. 12" releases listed at 33, but are really 45 and vice versa. How about one side 33, one side 45 (which we've seen from Baborb). I have a 12" where the first half is 45 and at the break you need to quickly switch to 33 or it sounds like you switched from 45 to 78 and everybody stares you down. I just add post it notes to the sleeves with any info I would need to know. In general I would say the whole vinyl 12" thing is set up for DJ's. And of course there are a lot of smart asses to mess with your mind. Half the good shit isn't even available to the general public. In the US if you don't live in a large market (LA, SF, NY, etc. etc.)or don't buy on line or at a "DJ" type shop you won't even find the goods. Badorb is just getting their feet wet on the marketing side and hopefully they'll get better as time passes. It's a larger label that is distributing their releases. I'm sure Deviant takes care of themselves with say a release that will sell 20,000 units before talking care of Badorb moving 473 units. Business, Babylon! I'm sure BOB 4.5 was a freebee because they kept us hanging for awhile there. Cool. Maybe we'll be in store for some more freebee's down the road. Like someone just mentioned, at least it's been worth the wait once we've received them. Granted they shouldn't't charge us until there ready to ship.
